ARC 5 Star Review: A Cold Legacy (Megan Shepherd)

A Cold Legacy (The Madman's Daughter, #3)Hardcover, 400 pages
Expected publication: January 27th 2015 by Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins

ARC Provided by Publisher for Honest Review

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.
Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.
With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

"What darkness began,
only madness can end..."

This is one of my most favorite series ever. When I began the first book in the series, The Madman's Daughter,  I was immediately drawn into the dark, creepy world of Juliet Moreau. Her story fascinated and scared me at the same time. I am a huge fan of Young Adult and Horror and this series is a perfect mix of those two genres.

The cover of A Cold Legacy is by far my most favorite in the series. The dark color scheme is the perfect blend of colors and matches the synopsis of the book perfectly. I love how Juliet looks so gorgeous set against the backdrop of the dark, brooding mansion.

This epic, stunning, and phenomenal book starts out with Juliet, Montgomery, Lucy, and Balthazar running from Lucy's father and his men. Elizabeth has given them directions to a remote mansion in the Scottish moors that her family has kept through several generations. The mansion is well-hidden and is a perfect hide-out for Juliet and Montgomery.

Once the group reaches the mansion they encounter the staff that lives and takes care of the mansion. Some of the staff are "mostly" normal while others seem to be very different. Juliet immediately feels as though something is not right and is determined to unravel the mysteries of this mansion and its tenants.

"I hope for your sake--if you truly are the mistress's ward--you have as strong a constitution as she does, Miss Moreau..."

There are several new characters that enter the story at this part in the book and Megan Shepherd really knows how to write in a character where they grab you and dont let go. I found myself completely absorbed in the story and each of their lives.

Balthazar is a character that just grabs my heart and won't let go. Each scene that he is in is just incredible and I usually find myself smiling. I love that he is so tender and yet so strong at the same time. He is so loyal and protective and by far one of my favorite characters in the book.

"I gave him a smile, trying to look brave, but something about Balthazar always crumbled the walls around my heart. I leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek."

A Cold Legacy is the perfect conclusion to an epic series of books. There are so many twists that you never see coming and I dont want to spoil it for those who have not started the series but let me tell you that if you want to be taken on an amazing, creepy, and surprise-filled journey then you need to pick up this series NOW!!!!! This series is one of those that will stay with me forever. Megan Shepherd created a entirely new YA Genre that is full of horror, suspense, and a breath-taking romance. The Madman's Daughter series is in a league of its own....Yes it is THAT good....

Kismet Book Tours Review & Giveaway: Embers (Karen Ann Hopkins)

Displaying Embers_BannerH.jpg

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them. And she may be the only hope mankind has as the rapture approaches and evil rises.
Embers is an epic paranormal adventure about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she’s in a horrific car crash that kills her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she finds out that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels. While Ember learns about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two young men who live in a frightening walled compound in the forest. Inexplicitly drawn to one of the men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it is cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war—one that’s been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound’s inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil—and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn’t only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She also might be one of the few champions who will make a stand for all of mankind as the rapture approaches and the end of days begin.
Embers is a dark and gritty YA novel that’s the first book in the series, The Wings of War.

About Embers:

A native of New York State, Karen Ann Hopkins now lives with her family on a farm in northern Kentucky, where her neighbors in all directions are members of a strict Amish community. Her unique perspective became the inspiration for the story of star-crossed lovers Rose and Noah. When she’s not homeschooling her kids, giving riding lessons or tending to a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, she is dreaming up her next romantic novel.

About Karen Ann Hopkins:

Loved this book! There is a story in the bible that tells of God's angels and the daughters of man! This book gives you an amazing account of the children that descended from the angels. I loved how the author gave the reader a scripture passage before each chapter! I was left guessing until the end on who was evil and who was good! Great climax during the battle! The ending leaves you wanting more! I give this book 5 stars!

Get Wicked with Entangled Blog Hop: Author Spotlight on Rhiannon Frater!!!!!

Get Wicked With Entangled Blog Hop

Strong Women of the Apocalypse
By
Rhiannon Frater

Almost a decade ago, I wrote an online serial called As The World Dies with two female protagonists fighting to survive in a zombie-infested world. The reaction to the initial installment was immediate. The majority was thrilled to see a different sort of hero killing zombies, but a small minority was furious. One of the naysayers mockingly called it “Thelma and Louise meets the zombies.” I loved that phrase so much, I used it to describe the story when I self-published it as a trilogy (The First Days, Fighting to Survive, Siege). Later, a reviewer updated the phrase to “Thelma and Louise meets The Walking Dead”, and that’s the tagline my publisher, Tor, decided to use when they reissued the trilogy.
My main characters, Jenni and Katie, made such a huge splash in As The World Dies because the zombie genre at that time was filled with male heroes, and women (and children) were expendable accessories to those heroes. Oftentimes, the gruesome death of a female character was used as an emotional motivator for the male. Some readers considered my online story with two female protagonists a bit blasphemous. Others embraced Jenni and Katie wholeheartedly, relieved to finally see women treated as capable human beings. The friendship between the two women and how it empowers them throughout their adventures was very different from the norm, but it was also something the readers loved. Despite some of the barbed comments directed at me, I stuck to my figurative guns.
Now, nearly ten years later, I’m known for my female protagonists, and it’s not so unusual for women to take lead roles in zombie/post-apocalyptic fiction.
In my three latest releases (yes, I’ve been busy!), I’m happy to say that I have some awesome female characters in the lead roles.
Jenni and Katie return in Deadly Night, a novelette set between The First Days and Fighting to Survive. I wrote the story for my fans and because I miss the two women so much. The As The World Dies trilogy is complete, but I do have a side project called The Untold Tales where I explore side stories within the same universe. Revisiting Jenni and Katie, their friendship, and their battles in a world overrun with zombies was incredibly emotional for me. At the crux of the new tale is how each woman deals with the loss of loved ones and how important their friendship is to their survival.
In The Mesmerized, Minji Nordim, a tattoo artist from Austin, Texas, struggles to save her husband and two small daughters from a terrible supernatural event that threatens to destroy the world. Minji is a different sort of character for me, because she’s a wife and a mother of a living family. In some of my other works, my main characters were dealing with the loss of their families, but Minji is actively fighting to save her own. Though she’s covered in tattoos, has dreadlocks, and likes to kickbox, she’s still a mother willing to do whatever it takes to save those she loves. It’s her maternal love that keeps her fighting until the end.
The Last Mission of the Living has a very different setting and protagonist. Set in a futuristic world, The Bastion is the last city of humanity. The extinction event threatening the world was brought about by a virus that reanimated the dead into rabid creatures who want to bite, infect, and spread the virus. Vanguard Lindsey Rooney is brilliant hacker who always keeps abreast of the inner workings of The Bastion at the top levels of government, but she has lost a lot of loved ones and has a lonely existence. I absolutely loved her character because she’s absolutely comfortable with who she is and she’s brave in the face of things that would send most screaming. She’s also quite loyal, and a relationship she forms with another soldier is an important part of the story. Lindsey is a bit more of an action star than my other female protagonists, but it’s her intelligence and cleverness that makes her such a dynamic character.
Though female characters are often stereotyped into specific roles in fiction, the reality is that women are just as diverse as males in what makes them tick, inspires them, and motivates them. The one thing I do love about writing female protagonists is breaking away from those tropes and making my characters as realistic as possible. I believe that a relatable heroine is an important part of writing an exciting fiction story that both men and women can enjoy.

Rhiannon Frater is the award-winning author of over a dozen books, including the As the World Dies zombie trilogy (Tor), as well as independent works such as The Last Bastion of the Living (declared the #1 Zombie Release of 2012 by Explorations Fantasy Blog and the #1 Zombie Novel of the Decade by B&N Book Blog), and other horror novels. She was born and raised a Texan and presently lives in Austin, Texas with her husband and furry children (a.k.a pets).  She loves scary movies, sci-fi and horror shows, playing video games, cooking, dyeing her hair weird colors, and shopping for Betsey Johnson purses and shoes.

I Am A Reader Blog Tour, Excerpt, & Giveaway: Jack Templar and the Lord of Werewolves (Jeff Gunhus)

Jack Templar 4 Tour

Jack Templar 4
Jack Templar and the Lord of the Werewolves Fresh from confronting the Lord of the Vampires in the limestone catacombs beneath Paris, Jack Templar faces his toughest challenge yet as he searches for the next Jerusalem Stone, this one being held by the Lord of the Werewolves. But the narrow escape from the vampire lair came at a great cost and Eva battles to survive the new vampire blood in her veins. The only chance to help Eva is to continue their quest and find the Jerusalem Stones. Reuniting the Stones will not only stop Ren Lucre’s coming war against mankind, but also transform Eva back into her human self. From the ruins of ancient Delhi to the depths of the Black Forest in Germany, Jack and his friends face monsters, bewildering riddles and treachery from the most unlikely of places. Through it all, they are plagued by the Oracle’s prediction that at least one of their group with not make it through the adventure alive. Worse yet, they know that Kaeden, the Lord of the Werewolves, will do his best to make sure none of them do. But they are monster hunters of the Black Guard… and they will do their duty, come what may.

The stench hung heavy in the air. There was no other smell in the world quite like it. First came the stink of grease fires from the wall torches, the heavy black smoke that roiled through the air like a foul fog. Then a moldering, musty base layer came to the senses. It reeked of decay and seeping moisture that grew black mold on every surface. The mold clung on the rough-cut rocks lining the dungeon tunnels. It covered the thick iron bars holding the prisoners in place. It even grew on the tattered rags covering the miserable creatures in the cells and likely on their skin as well. That final smell overlay the symphony of stink. The Creach prisoners. Werewolves, harpies, blind mad-worms, blinderwursts, fangpiercers, even some demons held with the special pure iron chains required to keep them in place. Many of these creatures were pungent under the best circumstances, but locked in the deepest dungeon underground, sometimes for decades, they took on an odor so ripe, so awful, that visitors to the dungeon often had to hold their breath to enter. Even then, the smell would make their eyes sting and well with tears. Immediately after leaving the dungeon, visitors were allowed a bath or a shower in the castle. As they washed the stench from their bodies, they would feel an overwhelming sense of thanks that they were not a prisoner wallowing in the horrifying conditions they’d just witnessed. No one, human or Creach, wanted to be a prisoner in the dungeons of Ren Lucre. Far away, at the end of one of the long, twisting corridors, came the creak of a massive door opening. The prisoners stirred at the sound. Their reactions mirrored how long they had been in their cells. The newer arrivals looked up with expectation, still hopeful their punishment was going to be short and that someone was coming to tell them their nightmare was over. Those who had been there longer knew that hope was useless in this dark place. They simply cowered farther into whatever dark corner they could find in their cell, desperate not to be noticed by the Master. Then there were those who had been there the longest. They simply looked up with mild interest, knowing that nothing they did made any difference. Their spirits were broken. Worse, they knew this to be the dark truth, and they simply didn’t care. One single prisoner reacted in none of these ways. He simply stood, and the rags that had once been his clothes hung on his bony frame. Unbroken by years of starvation and torture, he still squared his shoulders in the direction of the sound and raised his chin, his eyes glistening in the torchlight with defiance. What he saw would have brought a normal man to his knees, but this man was no more normal than the monster approaching. Ren Lucre, the five hundred year old vampire, filled the hallway as he strode through it, his cloak billowing behind him as he rushed past the stinking cells. His pale, narrow face looked pinched and concerned. His blood-red lip pursed in a straight line, and his eyes glowered like embers in a fire that might at any time combust into new flame. He came to the thick set of bars that held the proud man, stopped, and stared him down. “Well, if it isn’t the Lord of the Creach,” the man said. Even though his voice was course and weak, he still managed an edge of bitter sarcasm. “You look like you’re having a bad day.” The man spat on the floor. “Good.”

Naptime with Theo and BeauHardcover, 40 pages
Expected publication: February 3rd 2015
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

Author: Jessica Shyba

It all started when a loving mother posted a few pictures of her son, Beau, and their new puppy, Theo, napping together on her popular blogMomma’s Gone City. But these pictures were so "unbearably adorable" (The Daily Mail) and "utterly charming" (The Huffington Post) that it quickly became much, much more. By faithfully recording and sharing what Good Morning America calls "the most mesmerizing naps ever caught on camera," Jessica Shyba and her family captured the hearts of people all over the world, and these beautiful images of friendship and trust have become an international viral sensation.

I started this blog in May of 2009 as a way to keep in touch with family when we moved from the Bay Area of California to Manhattan. For four years, I wrote about our experiences in the big city while my husband attended dental school at NYU. We moved to Santa Cruz, California the summer after Justin graduated, and have been living here with our son Jack, our daughter Zoe, and our youngest Beau along with a feline named Charlie and a puppy we call Theo.
I’ve been able to run this blog as a business the last couple of years by publishing features and sponsored posts, though regardless of paid content, you can be absolutely sure that the opinions and ideas expressed herein are absolutely authentic. To Each Other We Belong

What a beautiful, mesmerizing, and completely heart-warming story. I found myself just staring at all the beautiful pictures of this precious child and precious pup before I even started reading the book. The pictures alone tell a unique one-of-a-kind story and then when you turn the page there are these perfect little sentences that capture each picture perfectly.

"The look on the puppy's face and the way he responded to the kids so quickly convinced us that we had met our newest family member. We decided to name him Theo....."

The readers learns that Theo is a rescue pup.... and that just goes to show you that calm, loving puppies do not necessarily have to be "bred" from expensive breeds. Jessica writes about this special pup and how he divides his time between all the children and basically knows each one's schedule and is there for them when they need him. This just warms my heart. Animals feel just as much as we do and this one special pup has found his place in the world in this precious family that is the Shyba's.

I loved this book and loved how the mother portrays the closeness and the precious relationship between her beautiful son and his one-of-a-kind pup. Each picture is so special and shows so much of Theo's personality. I will have to say that my most favorite picture is the "Cheek-To-Cheek" one. How precious...

I really hope that Jessica Shyba continues to capture these two as they both grow and shares their journey with the world. Theo and Beau have a long life of fun, wild adventures ahead of them and I can't wait to follow their journey with them....

When she started walking, he fell in step next to her.

Hand in hand, they moved as though they’d been together for years.

She glanced over at him. “Are you still up for going to dinner like we planned?”

He was hungry—there was no doubt about that. But food wasn’t what he craved.

Big snowflakes drifted lazily to the ground and quickly covered her hair. He’d never seen anyone so beautiful. It was going to be hard to stay focused on his priorities when all he wanted to do was get closer to Reese. If only his life were different…

In that moment he heard the king’s clear, distinct voice in his head. Your life is one of honor—of duty. You must always think of the kingdom first.

And that was what he was doing—but each day it was getting harder and harder to live by those rules. He glanced at Reese. Definitely much harder than he’d ever imagined.

Looking for a heart-warming fairy tale love story?!  This book is for you!  I absolutely loved this book!  Reese had to drop out of college to return home after her father dies.  Reese and her mother are left in debt and are trying to keep their New York family mansion in business.

Their luck begins to change when they over book their rooms and let a very intriguing guest stay in their private quarter of the house.  Alex does not let anyone know that he is the Princess of Mirraccino!!!  Neither Alex or Reese are looking for love but they both realize that their is something between them!

I would definitely recommend adding this book to your list!  It is a great love story with just the right amount of Christmas spirit!  I give it 5 stars!
