HarperCollins Blog Tour, Excerpt, & Giveaway: It Started With A Scandal (Julie Anne Long)

Lord Philippe Lavay once took to the high seas armed with charm as lethal as his sword and a stone-cold conviction: he’ll restore his family’s fortune and honor, no matter the cost. Victory is at last within reach—when a brutal attack snatches it from his grasp and lands him in Pennyroyal Green.
An afternoon of bliss brings a cascade of consequences for Elise Fountain. Shunned by her family and ousted from a job she loves, survival means a plummet down the social ladder to a position no woman has yet been able to keep: housekeeper to a frighteningly formidable prince.
The bold and gentle Elise sees past his battered body into Philippe’s barricaded heart . . . and her innate sensuality ignites his blood. Now a man who thought he could never love and a woman who thought she would never again trust must fight an incendiary passion that could be the ruin of them both.

USA Today bestselling author JULIE ANNE LONG originally set out to be a rock star when she grew up (and she has the guitars and fringed clothing stuffed in the back of her closet to prove it), but writing was always her first love. Since hanging up her guitar for the computer keyboard, her books frequently top reader and critic polls and have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Rita, Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice, and The Quills, and reviewers have been known to use words like “dazzling,” “brilliant,” and “impossible to put down” when describing them. Julie lives in Northern California.

It took all of Elise's fortitude to resist craning her head after the fleeing Mrs. Winthrop.
“Please sit down, Mrs. Fountain.”

She went still. His native French still haunted his consonants and turned the vowels into veritable caresses. She could almost see the elegant, endless spill of a fountain when he said her name.

“Mrs. Fountain. Has Mrs. Winthrop brought to me an applicant who does not speak English?”

The tone was silk over steel, exquisitely polite. And yet she could easily imagine him ordering the beheading of whoever had brought him such a stupid and mute candidate in the very same tone.

“Forgive me, Lord Lavay. I do know how to sit.”

She tried a little half smile. She knew she possessed a portion of charm, though it was a trifle rusty from disuse, given that she'd locked it away after it had gotten her into trouble.

“If you would be so kind as to demonstrate your ability to do so.”

He gestured to a chair upholstered in chocolate-colored velvet. She might as well have been a chair herself for all the charm he exerted. She felt positively neutered. Which was perhaps all for the best.

She sat gingerly, and what she hoped was gracefully, on the very edge of it, the better to bolt if necessary, and folded her hands.

Oh God...the chair was so soft. It cradled her bum almost lasciviously. It's tall, spreading fan of a back beckoned like a lover's arms. And her life had seemed so narrow and spiky for so long, in every direction she turned, the comfort surprised her by nearly doing her in.

She slid a tentative inch backward as Lord Lavay lowered himself into the chair opposite her, slowly.

He's in Sussex recovering from an attack, she'd been told.

She began to think it was an attack of apoplexy.

She could see their two faces reflected in the polished wood of the table. His clean-hewn as wood itself. Hers small and white, looking a little too insignificant.

“Splendid. We have established you do indeed know how to sit. A very good thing, as I do not tolerate liars.” He smiled again faintly here, which she supposed was meant to soften that little thrown-down gauntlet of a statement.

She offered a tight little smile of her own. Demonstrating my ability to smile.

“What do you believe are your qualifications, Mrs. Fountain?”

What an interesting way to put it. As if he alone would judge whether she possessed any qualifications at all.

“I have been trained—” She was shocked to hear her voice emerge as a reedy croak, probably due to the thin atmosphere his lofty presence created. She cleared her throat. “I have been trained in the managing of a fine residence, including adhering to budgets to deciding upon household purchases to preparing pastries and remedies and simples, to hiring and discharging—”

“Where?”

She blinked. “I'm sor...?”

“The residence,” he articulated slowly. “Where was this, as you say, fine residence?”

She'd been with the man for fewer than five minutes and she wanted to kick him.

“Northumberland.”

“For whom did you manage this residence?”

She hesitated. Her heart ratcheted in speed.

“The home belongs to my parents. I was raised and educated there.”

She did not say she was no longer welcome in it.

If he wanted the whole story, he was going to need to drag it from her one question at a time.

His gaze was so intense it was as though he held the tips of two lit cheroots to her skin.

Perhaps he already knew, despite what Mrs. Winthrop had said?. Sometimes it felt as though the entire world knew.

But surely she wasn't as important as all that?

And surely there were enough Redmonds and Everseas about to keep the scandal mill fed?

Her heart was thudding so hard it felt like someone was throwing angry kicks at her breastbone.

She surrendered and slid those last few inches into the chair's embrace. Lavay's shoulders were vast beneath that sleek, flawlessly tailored coat. She wondered if any woman had ever taken comfort there. Or perhaps the sole point of his existence was to make women feel awed and insignificant.
“And why do you now seek employment as a housekeeper for a fine residence?”

She hesitated. At least she now knew a good use for that word she loathed.

“My circumstances have since changed.”

His brows flicked upward in apparent surprise.

Since she was now convinced this would be the last time she ever saw him, she was emboldened to stare back, which wasn't easy to do, because he somehow managed to be both exhilarating and terrifying. His eyes were an unusual color, russet and gold, a bit like brandy shot through with sunlight. She wondered if they brightened when he laughed.

If he laughed.

Faint mauve shadows curved beneath his eyes; his skin seemed stretched with fatigue. What appeared to be a new scar, faintly pink and narrow as a knife tip, scored his cheekbone for about two inches. How that must have hurt, she thought. Though didn't really mar his looks. It was more like an underscore: This man is beautiful and dangerous.

She suspected she now understood what “attack” meant now. Something like sympathy surged through her. There was, of course, always the possibility he'd been attacked by the last housekeeper for being insufferable.

In the silence a log tumbled from its perch and the fire gave a vehement pop.

“Circumstances,” he said ironically at last, “have an unfortunate tendency to do that.”

His mouth dented at the corner. If this was a smile, it hadn't reached his eyes. Irony seemed his native language.

She was stunned.

She feared she stared at him dumbly in the silence that followed.

Which was so taut that when he gave his fingers a single drum on the table, she almost jumped.

“The current staff is lazy and recalcitrant and I because I have had sent to me a few possessions I value, such as silver and porcelain, thievery is a concern. But then good servants are always difficult to come by, even for such a one as me. I have high expectations and low hopes of seeing them met. What qualifies you to command loyalty and efficiency from a staff, and makes you think you will be able to meet my expectations?”

The unspoken words being, “where others have departed sobbing.”

And 'Such a one,' was it? Surely the world could not withstand another such man.

She drew in a long breath.

“I've taught classrooms full of unruly children possessed of a variety of natures, and I know how to make them listen and learn and like it. I understand the concerns and politics of household staff and am prepared to address and manage them. I have experienced a number of, shall we say, economic conditions, and can adjust to any of them. I am scrupulously organized. All in all, I have a very good brain. And I am afraid of nothing.”

Except you.

She'd just told a brazen lie to the man who claimed he would not tolerate them.

She suspected he looked at men just this way before he decided whether or not to run them through: It was sort of a mildly interested, fixed expression. She was not a woman to him; she was a problem to address, a code to decipher, a decision to coolly make. At one time her vanity may have been wounded.

Now nothing else mattered apart from what Lord Lavay did next.

“You may have the position on a trial basis for a fortnight, Mrs. Fountain.” He said it almost idly. “You will start immediately.”

She froze.

And then an almost violent relief sent heat rushing into her face and blurred her vision. For a merciful second an infinitely safer, softer version of him swam before her eyes.

He drew one of those crumpled-then-smoothed sheets of foolscap toward him and perused it. As if he'd already forgotten her.

She freed her hands from their demure knot and absently swiped her damp palms along her skirt before folding them again.

She was proud that her voice was clear and steady.

“Thank you. You shall not regret your decision, Lord Lavay.”

“I seldom have cause to regret my decisions.” He said it coolly, almost absently, eyes on the correspondence, not on her. Indulging a serf just this once. “You may leave now, Miss Fountain.”

As she departed she surreptitiously dragged her hand across the top of the chair as if it were an exotic pet. A thank-you for the comfort.

Blog Tour, Excerpt, & Giveaway: Magical Love (Gail Hamilton)

Is There a Formula for True Love?
When two people fall in love it’s magical…but sometimes the magic needs a little nudging… Or so biochemist, Jason Lucas, thought when he developed a formula to help love-challenged people like himself find true love. Ironically, in "Will He Be Mine," the millionaire scientist unwittingly begins a searing relationship with one of his test subjects and comes to question the feasibility of any love-enhancer formula.
Determined to stop all testing on his love enhancer, Jason elicits the help of his assistant, Lydia, to collect the last samples from nerdish test subject, Damone Reid. This quest propels the curvaceous, African-American woman into a wild adventure in "Man on The Run," fueled by a rejuvenated, romantic Damone, who sweeps her away and off her feet.
Unfortunately, Damone’s samples go astray, and end up in Penny Clark’s perfume. In "Animal Magnetism," Penny is thrilled to find she has unusual skills around wild animals. Intrigued by her abilities, rugged veterinarian, Garth Snowdon, soon falls under her spell. But after one night of explosive passion their love is put to the test when Garth discovers Penny’s heartbreaking secret.
"Magical Love" tells the stories of three couples whose lives change drastically after using the love enhancer formula. Yet despite the heated romances, the emotional intimacies, doubt creeps into the relationships—is it true love or is it the formula?

The door sported a sign that said "Danger. Do Not Enter" in big red letters
Smoothing her hair, straightening her clothes, determined to put her best foot forward, Penny grasped the door handle.  Pulling it open, she stepped decisively inside.
And froze!
She was in a bare concrete corridor with barred cage doors on one side.  All were closed except the one opposite Penny, which stood wide open.  Only feet away, a man was backed up against the wall.
 Backed up for good reason.
An enormous Siberian tiger, loose in the corridor, was fixed on him, lips pulled back in an ominous snarl.
Without moving a muscle, the man hissed urgently at her out of the side of his mouth.
"Whoever you are, get out before the tiger sees you!"
No part of Penny's body would move.  No part of her brain was able to give a command.
Not when the great cat's head swiveled around and fixed Penny with its terrible yellow eyes.
Slowly, it lifted its head, cocked it to one side, and then took a step in Penny's direction.
Penny found out what it meant to die a thousand deaths inside of an eye blink.  She actually felt her heart slow down, beating in huge, lolloping thuds as though struggling in heavy molasses.  The tiger took a second step toward her.  Then another, until it was near enough for her to feel the heat of its breath as it sniffed at her harshly.  Its fierce yellow gaze burned into her.  The striped head, up close, was massive.
"N-n-n-nice k-kitty," she heard herself croaking out idiotically.  "Why don’t you go back into your c-c-c-cage?"
The huge cat’s lips quivered, again revealing a terrifying flash of fangs.   But the tiger’s tail, which had been lashing the whole time, suddenly slowed. The menace seemed to die quietly away.  With a final, assessing stare at Penny, the animal turned away and padded through the open cage door into the dimness inside.
Instantly, the man sprang away from the wall and clanged the cage door shut.   Next, he clamped an arm around Penny’s waist and swept her out through the metal door into the sunshine and the normal world where loose tigers did not roam.
It was a good thing the man’s arm was strong.  Once outside, Penny’s knees gave way.  She would have sunk to the ground had not the fellow held her upright. Instead, she collapsed against him.
For an endless moment, they stood leaning together.  Penny could feel the man’s heart thumping like a steam hammer. When her own heart started to remember how to beat like it wasn’t going to explode any time soon, Penny came to herself enough to stand on her own and peel herself off the man’s chest.
“I…oh goodness…I’m s-sorry s-so s-sorry—tiger big—s-sorry—”
She was incoherent.  And felt as though the man’s shirt buttons were imprinted on her flesh.
“You should be,” the tall, broad-shouldered man suddenly roared in her ear.  “Don’t you know not to walk through a door that says, ‘Danger. Do Not Enter?’  What part of that don’t you understand?”
Penny jumped and stared.  The face next her was volcanic.  Two pale blue eyes blazed out at her. Muscles stood out in ridges all along the man’s jaw.
“You could have been killed!” he sputtered.  “Killed with one swipe of that cat’s claws.”
“I thought you saw me on a camera and were asking me to come in,” Penny cried.
That, at least, stopped the next hot burst.  The angry mouth opened and then shut again.  The jaw muscles smoothed down a bit.  The man ran rigid fingers through a wavy, dark windblown hair and struggled visibly to get a hold of himself.
“The…the tiger didn’t hurt me.  It went back inside the cage.”
Two male brows slid together thoughtfully.  A great deal of the volcanic heat in his face subsided.  The man began to look Penny over closely.
“No,” he said with a tone of incredulity, “she didn’t.  That tiger was badly abused and came to us pregnant.  She’s usually ready to maul anything within reach.  But when you…well, I’ve never seen her calm down so quickly. Who are you anyway?"
“Penny Clark.  Here about the job.  I came through the fence looking for Dr. Snowdon.”
“That’s me.” The man seemed to shake himself. “Sorry about the yelling but you gave me one helluva scare.  With the animals we keep, we can’t afford a single security breach.”
Yeah, right.  So just how had Dr.  Snowdon himself managed to get cornered in there with no means of escape in sight?
As the man motioned for her to follow and set out toward the house, Penny knew this wasn’t the time to ask.  Inwardly she debated just making a dash for her car.  How badly did she need a job that involved near death by tiger?
“Call me Garth,” the fellow said over his shoulder.
As they approached the house, Garth’s hand slipped lightly to Penny’s waist to guide her into the rear garden.  Just as he was thinking the waist was nicely trim and supple, he got a full whiff of her perfume, Lucky Love. He had to stop himself from wheezing.
Migawd, what is that perfume!  It could knock over a horse!
Quickly, he stepped out of range, and seated Penny on a stone bench. This woman had recklessly walked straight through an off-limits door and almost into a tiger’s jaws.  He couldn’t afford anybody careless enough to make a possibly fatal mistake.

On the other hand, she hadn’t screamed or done anything stupid when Sabir approached her. Also, his chest still throbbed with the memory of her body collapsing against him.  She had made an impression on him.  A very strong impression.

Swoon Reads Blog Tour & GIVEAWAY: Save Me (Jenny Elliott)

Displaying Save Me_blog tour banner.jpg

Save Me
Paperback, 336 pages
Expected publication: January 6th 2015 by
Publisher: Swoon Reads
Author: Jenny Elliott

Debut-novelist Jenny Elliott’s thrilling romance, chosen by readers, writers, and publishers for the first list in the new Swoon Reads imprint, pours on the tension and danger in an addictive combination that will keep you turning pages!
Something strange is going on in the tiny coastal town of Liberty, Oregon. Cara has never seen a whale swim close enough for her to touch it—let alone knock her into the freezing water. Fortunately, cute newcomer David is there to save her, and the rescue leads to a bond deeper than Cara ever imagined.
But then she learns something about David that changes everything, and Cara is devastated. She turns to her best friend for support, but Rachel has changed. She’s suddenly into witchcraft, and is becoming dangerously obsessed with her new boyfriend….
Cara has lost her best friend, discovered that her soul mate is off limits, and has attracted the attention of a stalker. But she’s not completely alone. Her mysterious, gorgeous new friend Garren is there to support her. But is Garren possibly too perfect?

Jenny Elliott
Jenny Elliott is a lifelong resident of Washington State and lives in Spokane with her husband and four kids. Writing fiction is her favorite method for avoiding insanity. Other avoidance techniques include reading, playing Scrabble, and browsing social media sites. Save Me is her first novel. Follow her on Twitter at @jennykelliott.

"Seeking extra insulation, Cara wedged her hand between David's arm and side and slipped a leg between his. He tucked her head under his chin and clutched her to him. No one had ever held her so securely. Her body warmed quickly in his arms. "

Save Me by Jenny Elliott is a young adult paranormal romance that takes place in a small town called Liberty, Oregon and is full of paranormal entity's such as witches, demons, and angels.

The main character is a young woman named Cara. Cara is fascinated with whales so she takes a part-time job with a whale watching boat cruise. She gets to work one day and meets the new guy in town, David, while on the cruise. Cara has an accident while on the cruise and is thrown overboard. David rushes in to save her and brings her back to the boat. This is where the romance begins between Cara and David. The two go to dinner at a local restaurant and really hit it off.

"The ocean breeze blew wisps of her hair in her face and David ran his fingers through a  few tendrils. She glanced at his mouth and he leaned down and brushed his lips against hers. The kiss was light, but the flood of warmth between them was the greatest yet, like a fire that turned her bones to ash and set her skin aflame."

A few days later Cara returns to school and to her surprise she finds out that David has taken a position at the school as a intern teacher. Cara and David both realize that they cannot continue their relationship because of the circumstances.

Cara also has a best friend name Rachel who has been by here side for the last couple of years and they have been inseparable. Rachel begins dating a young guy who is basically a "goth" and suddenly her whole demeanor and attitude toward Cara changes drastically. She begins to be rude and mean toward Cara and tells her that they can no longer be friends.

Cara is hurt and upset and along comes another new boy in town name Garren. Cara finds solace in talking with Garren because he is a great listener and they quickly become best friends.

This is just the beginning  of a story that has so many twists and secrets that are to be revealed and it would really ruin the story if I talked anymore about it. Just know that this is an very enjoyable, clean young adult romance. This book would be perfect for middle graders who are moving on to young adult books.

I would have to say that my favorite part of the entire book was the atmosphere that the author set the story in. I loved the idea of all of this occurring by the sea. Jenny Elliott's description of the ocean and the area surrounding was just breath-taking. I felt as though I was in the book and breathing in the salt air.

"Cara responded to an inner urge to walk on the beach. A bright ball of yellow sun burned in a vibrant blue sky. She made her way down the hill and, when she came to the sand, she had to look away from the glare of sunlight, reflecting off the water's surface and focus farther down the coastline.

Waves poured onto the wet sand below the drier strip where she walked. She concentrated on the soothing sound of the water trickling toward the shore. No wind blew, but crisp air nipped at her nose and her cheeks."

I kiss him, choosing love over honesty, which is a choice nobody should ever have to make…"
Robin loves sweet, responsible Nick, with his penchant for Beethoven and Ben Folds Five. But she also still loves her college boyfriend Jed, an irreverent playwright plagued with cystic fibrosis. Now Robin is struggling to reveal her secrets and confront her past, as she finally performs in the play that Jed wrote for her, eleven years ago. Will Robin have the strength to keep her promise and stay true to her heart?
Alternating between present-day scenes, college flashbacks, and segments from Jed’s play, this tear-jerking yet uplifting tale illustrates how life is finite but love is infinite, and the road to recovery begins with the next breath.

Laurel Osterkamp becomes very attached to her characters, and it’s hard for her to stop writing about them.  The Holdout, November Surprise, Blue State, Campaign Promises, American Angst and The Next Breath all feature the Bricker family, as their stories continue. (But you can read any of these books in any order.) You can find Laurel on Twitter but she needs to work on sending clever Tweets. A better idea is to follow her blog at www.laurelosterkamp.blogspot.com. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

The Next Breath stars Robin, the same main character as in my 2013 release, The Holdout. I had the best time writing about Robin and I knew I wanted to continue her story. But when I started writing a second book I felt that sophomore slump. How do I write something unique and dynamic? I decided I need to play around with flashbacks, and put Robin in a life or death situation. I wanted to capture the raw feeling of being young and in love, when the stakes are super-high.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

Robin is my favorite. I wish I could be more like her! She’s good at so many things, and she’s genuine and loyal.

Which came first, the title or the novel?

Definitely the novel! I was originally going to call it The Fallout, keeping it similar to The Holdout. Then one night I was on Goodreads, and saw a new release called Fallout, which, like my book, was a novel about theater. I didn’t want there to be confusion, so I gave up trying to having a themed title, and called it The Next Breath, which fits the story way better anyway.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Towards the end of the novel, Robin performs in a play that her college boyfriend, Jed, wrote for her. The play becomes super important, and I knew I had to include it. But I sort of kicked myself in the foot with it, setting Jed up as a “brilliant” playwright. I found writing “Jed’s” play to be really intimidating: writing in a different genre, and from the voice of 21-year-old male with cystic fibrosis. It was a challenge! But I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

I read and learned a lot about cystic fibrosis, and that was incredibly valuable to me. I also feel really good about confronting issues of life, love, and loss. Sometimes I’m scared to put my characters in truly painful situations. It’s like they’re my children, and I don’t want to see them suffer. But I got past that while writing The Next Breath.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Christa Holland, at PaperandSage.com designed the cover, and I think she did an amazing job! I found the photo and she added the lighting effects, composed it, and put in this cool font. I smile every time I look at it.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?

You know, I don’t pay that much attention to what’s being released, but there are a lot of things on my kindle that I’m looking forward to reading, like Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little, and The Year of the Gadfly by Jennifer Miller. Also, I’ve already books one and two in the Grisha trilogy, by Leigh Bardugo, and I’m excited to read the third.

What was your favorite book in 2014?

I loved Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty, and Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes. I don’t know which one I’d pick as my favorite; they were all so good!

 What’s up next for you?

I plan to write one more book about Robin. Right now my ideas for this next book include a reality show like Project Runway, a ballet dancer-turned model who is in trouble, a love triangle (but not for Robin), scaling large buildings, and life or death situations. Sounds crazy, right? But I’d love to make it all work.

Is there anything that you would like to add?

Thanks so much for having me, and for giving my book a chance!
