CLP Blog Tours Interview & Excerpt: The Lobby (Randi M. Sherman)

Welcome to The Shipley Hotel, where the perky and attentive staff provides the gold standard in artificial concern and comfort to all the colorful characters who pass through its polished brass revolving door and find themselves in The Lobby. Practically engineered for eavesdropping, San Francisco’s juiciest hotel lobby offers the perfect place to witness the comings and goings—and the most comedic intersections—of staff, long-term residents, and eclectic guests. Featuring over fifty stories all transpiring in a single twenty-four hour period and intersecting in the Shipley’s elegant lobby, readers will meet an eccentric and vast array of characters, most of whom will look awfully familiar and all of whom will speak to the heart. Employing acute skills in human observation and a keen understanding of the essential human needs—frequently unplanned and unexpected rendezvous, ready laughter at others’ expense, and maybe even a little love and acceptance—Randi M. Sherman’s unique wit and candor will surely make the reader sit up, stand up, roll over, or assume an interested leaning position and take notice. Get comfortable (on the exquisitely upholstered lobby couch) and spy on those checking in and out of the Shipley. Careful: you might just encounter a version of yourself among the ornate balconies and intricate woodwork.

A native Californian, raised in "the valley," Randi moved to San Francisco decades ago and more recently makes her home in California's wine country. Trying her hand at country living Randi describes herself the Eva Gabor of the Sonoma/Napa area.
Until Randi's huge success as an author, or until potato chips are considered a vegetable and wine is accepted as a fruit, Randi continues to split her time between writing, laughing and actually enjoying her life with more undesirable tasks such as being a stuffy corporate-type using her Bachelors of Science Degree from Chapman University.

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
Initially THE LOBBY wasn't the book I started out writing. I had planned on writing a straight novel; One with a beginning, middle, arc and end. One with a single main character. But as I was developing the sub-characters - I loved them so much that I gave them all equal importance in the novel

Who is your favorite character in the book?
That's a tricky question. Its like asking which child is a mothers favorite. But if you pressed me I'd say I love the sentimental interaction between Jacqueline and May in the 4:00PM hour.

Which came first, the title or the novel?
This is the first time the title came first.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Again the sentimental scenes make me proud - because after chapter after laugh-out-loud chapter and character after hilarious character it was nice to create a resting place for the readers. Once they rest, maybe even shed a tear - they are back on the road to laughter.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
I've learned that a writer needs to take off her shoes, untuck her blouse, raise her hands up over her head and run full speed down the hill. A writer need to let go of all inhibitions and fears and "go for it."

What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Its beautiful isn't it? I truly depicts what I wanted it to: the luxury, glamour and warmth of au upscale hotel

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?
Amy Schumer's new book - I want to see what an 8 million dollar advance looks like

What was your favorite book in 2015?
The Gold Finch by Donna Tartt and The Truth About Caroline by Randi M Sherman (me)

What’s up next for you?
I have another book that's almost ready to go -so I look forward to pulling the trigger on that one. I'm also anxious about getting THE LOBBY represented to go from Book to film or Book to stage.

Is there anything that you would like to add?
Thank you so much Beth. I encourage everyone who reads THE LOBBY to write a review - and/or drop me a line and let me know what you think (send it thru my website ,contact page)

Slump-shouldered and dizzy from exhaustion, Peggy stretched her neck, took a deep breath and rubbed her eyes, willing herself to be awake and perky. Dressed for the day in her high-rise, poly-blend walking shorts, a muted-colored Madras blouse, and an oversized pastel pink Jazzercise visor, she stood in the hotel lobby. It was only 6:00 a.m. Looking out through the front windows of the hotel, she could see the streets were still practically empty, and even the sun was having second thoughts about starting the day. Waking up before six o’clock in the morning was just too early, especially on a vacation.

“Hank, dear,” she said sweetly, holding a Mylar-wrapped breakfast bar. “Have one of these energy grain bars. It has fiber.”

He snatched it from her, peeled back the wrapper, then shoved it into his mouth and ate it in just two bites. Crumbs flying, he said, “Damned right. I’m not going to wait in line at some overpriced coffee shop for a plate of twelve-dollar eggs. We can have an early lunch.” He spotted a basket of shiny red apples on the registration desk. “Mary Margaret, go get a few of those too. They will tide us over.”

Peggy’s movements are hindered by the beige naugahyde pocket-for-everything purse that was slung over her head and shoulder, crossing her chest. The purse strap was too short for it to be worn this way. It cut tightly between her breasts and rested at her side, just below her armpit, causing her arm to hang at a forty-five degree angle from her body.

“You can never be too careful, Mary Margaret.” Hank checked the positioning of her bag. “I hear there is a lot of purse snatching going on in this city.” He stood back to take a look at her. “Maybe you should put on your sweater—you look like a tourist. You’re just inviting trouble.”

It was big talk from Hank, who was dressed in brighter than-white walking shoes with Velcro closures for efficiency, an AARP fanny pack, and his new short-sleeved sport shirt which was tucked tightly into his underwear beneath his sans-a-belt, high-water polyester dress slacks, replete with a bulging back pocket due to an overstuffed wallet. Clutching his cartoonish city map like it was the map to the Holy Grail, Hank marched toward the morning clerk who was standing behind the front desk. He pointed at Peggy’s feet. “Pick ‘em up and lay ‘em down. We have a lot to do today, and it’s already after six.” With purpose, Hank asked the desk clerk Candice, “Is the conger . . . conseer here?”

Another typical tourist, Candice thought. Ready to go at the crack of dawn. Should I tell him that with the exception of a Starbucks, nothing in this city is open before nine? “Good morning, sir,” Candice smiled. “I see you are up early. I’m sorry sir, but Philippe, the concierge, does not get in until nine o’clock. Perhaps I can help you with something?”

“Yes, you can. We have a heavy day of sightseeing ahead of us, and I want to be efficient about it.” Hank slapped the map down on the counter.

“Okay, I’ll see what I can do. What would you like to do today?” Candice smiled again, as she was trained to do.

“Well,” Hank began, “today we want to walk across theGolden Gate Bridge, ride on a cable car, go to the Cable Car Museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, that curvy Lombardo Street, Golden Gate Park, the Legion of Honor, the Cannery, and Alcatraz.”

Peggy tapped Hank on the shoulder. “And don’t forget Union Square, Hank.”

“You can shop at home,” He called over his shoulder. Turning back to Candice, “What’s the best route? I’d like to work from furthest to closest.” Hank was all about efficiency. “It’s all about organization,” he explained. If a household task could be wrapped up in five minutes he found a way to do it in four. “In the military . . .” Hank would say and then fill in the blank with the most Hank-a-fied, time-efficient way to do something. He meant well, but Peggy knew that he usually made it up as he went along.

Peggy had always hated being called Mary Margaret, Hun, or Marge, but Hank insisted. She endured Hank’s bossy, blow-hard-headedness all for the sake of keeping him calm. They had been married for thirty-five years, and she figured it was probably her fault that he was the way he was. After all, she had been raised to be agreeable. But she secretly wanted to break free of the middle of the row, middle class, very average, superefficient life she was leading and do something wild, something unplanned. Thursday night Bingo just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Anything new or different would be welcome. Dining out somewhere other than the two places in town where Hank was comfortable and where he didn’t spend twenty minutes raving about the “cost of things”— that would be good. Sex with the lights on or for longer than two minutes would be a welcome change. But neither would be enough. Peggy craved the life that she saw on the morning and afternoon talk shows. The life where people were frivolous and chatty, who drank champagne any day, for any occasion, not just at 11:55 PM on December 31st. Wearing a piece of clothing that wasn’t labeled “wash-n-wear” or blended with some fabric that’s name ended in -ester or -oline would be heaven after years in flammable synthetic clothing.

CLP Blog Tours, Review, & Giveaway: Love, Alabama (Susan Sands)

Emma Laroux’s a fallen Southern beauty queen whose past is barely whispered about in her small town. But the secrets and lies surrounding her scandal still haunt her, and something about Matthew Pope may hold the answers...if only she could put her finger on it.

Matthew Pope wonders what awful karmic thing he’s done to land him in Podunk, Alabama. But when he sees Emma Laroux again after all this time, he knows he’s still the only one who holds the key to unlocking the truth of her past…

Will a shared moment in time ten years ago threaten the best thing that’s ever happened to them – each other?

Susan Sands grew up in a tiny Southern town in Northwest Louisiana near the Texas border. She graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, during the filming of Steel Magnolias on her campus. There’s no more Southern, small town claim to fame than that.
Her characters and setting are pulled from those very Southern, small towns and open spaces, where the air is clean and the words are often spoken with more syllables than necessary, y’all.
Her lifelong love of reading and the realization that her children were growing up and would eventually move on spurred her to try her hand at writing. Susan’s two novels, Again, Alabama, and Love, Alabama, are currently available both in digital format and in print from all online retailers.
Susan lives with her dentist husband and three nearly grown children in Johns Creek, GA. She is a member of the Georgia Romance Writers and the Romance Writers of America.

She loves connecting with readers and can be found at all the fun places:

I may be a little bias when reviewing this book. I am a former small town Alabama pageant girl that attended Auburn University. I feel like this book was written just for me, ha!! I absolutely LOVED it! Emma had it all...the beauty, the grace, the perfect boyfriend and the coveted crown of Miss Alabama. Tad, the perfect boyfriend turns out to be anything but!

The mystery that surrounds what really happened between Emma and Tad keeps the reader intrigued. And then there's Matthew! Matthew comes to Emma's hometown to help with the production of her sisters cooking show. Emma and Matthew quickly form a friendship that leads to them being more than just friends. I love the chemistry portrayed between these two! Matthew is keeping a secret though. When Emma finds out will she be able to forgive him?! I give this book 5 stars!!! Loved it and can't wait to read other books written by Susan Sands!

CLP Blog Tours, Review, & Giveaway: Crushed (Layne Gray)

After a decade of dialing it in on her marriage – subsisting mostly on school fundraisers and designer trunk shows – Grace, on a whim, surprises her husband at the airport, picking him up in nothing more than scant lingerie and a fur coat. But that backfires spectacularly. Hoping to help, Grace’s best friend tells her of a secret retreat for discarded wives—Finedale, where Grace just may be able to get back her confidence, build her self-esteem, learn a rewarding career, or even rediscover that hot sex needn't be a thing of the past.

Before long, Grace is orchestrating a new, fabulous life. Everything seems to be going brilliantly. But as cracks begin to appear the possibility of another, darker, truth behind Finedale catapults Grace into a role she never anticipated.

Layne Gray is an author, entrepreneur and experienced marketing strategist. Layne’s background is in technology marketing and she has worked for large companies, including as Director of UNIX Product Line Marketing at Oracle Corporation and Director of UNIX Application Marketing at Altos Computer Systems. She was the founder of LKE Productions, a global technology conference production company that ramped to over $20M in annual revenues.

Layne is a seasoned charitable fundraiser who has helped raise millions of dollars for local and national charities through events she has chaired and campaigns she has spearheaded. Bay Area beneficiaries have included the San Francisco Ballet, Junior League of San Francisco, San Francisco Zoological Society. National organizations include buildOn, UN Foundation Girl Up and Mocha Moms.

Born and raised in Oregon, Layne received a B.A. in Marketing and Statistics from the University of Oregon. She has taken the WSET Level 3 Certification and teaches wine classes around the country. Layne is an Emeritus Board member of the San Francisco Zoological Society and a sustaining member of the Junior League of San Francisco and the San Ballet Auxiliary. She lives in San Francisco and enjoys cycling, snow skiing and walking her dogs at Crissy Field.

Oh how I loved me some Grace in this book! What an amazing woman this main character portrayed. Grace knew her marriage needed some work but when she showed up to surprise her husband, poor Grace was the one who was in for a surprise. Her friend Brett suggest a very exclusive "treatment spa" for Grace. Wow! What a spa! But something was just not quite right. Will Grace go back to her broken marriage or will she find another love? I give this book 4 stars! Fun read!

CLP Blog Tours, Interview, & Giveaway: Sex, Lies, and Cruising (Cathryn Chapman)

CLP Blog Tours

sex lies and cruisingCathryn Chapman will be on tour July 20-August 17 with her novel Sex, Lies and Cruising
Exotic locations, sexy men, and crazy crew parties… Ellie has her dream job… or does she? When Ellie's fiancé cheats on her with a younger, slimmer, blonde from the office, she boots him out of her life and finds solace in a fabulous photography job aboard a Caribbean cruise ship. Twenty-four hours on board and she’s already shagged her sexy Texan colleague, who happens to love her muffin-top. Unfortunately he’s leaving in a week, and his ex-girlfriend, a hot-headed Brazilian with stripper moves right out of the 90s and a talent for stealing boyfriends, is still on board and out for revenge. Ellie must work out how to deal with the loco ex, sort the lying scumbags from the good guys, and figure out how many crew members in a cabin it takes before officially becoming group sex. Who the hell knows? (It’s five, actually.) It’s a world completely unlike the one she left behind, but as she tries to find her place on board, Ellie discovers laughter and tears in equal measure. And in the midst of the craziness, she realises the greatest thing this lifestyle change has given her is the chance to rediscover herself.

cathryn chapman
Cathryn Chapman nearly gave up her writing career when her eighth grade English teacher refused to believe her sensual poem could have been written by somebody so young. Two years later, when Cathryn was fourteen, that same English teacher declared she should start writing for Mills & Boon, and a women s fiction writer was born. Cathryn graduated from university with a Business Degree and spent seven years travelling the world working on cruise ships, and living in London, New York, Paris and South America. In her thirties, she left a successful marketing and public relations career to pursue her dream of gracing the stages in London s West End. When this failed dismally, Cathryn settled down with a husband and baby boy, and stayed in one country long enough to finally write her first novel, SEX, LIES, AND CRUISING.

1.       What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I worked briefly on cruise ships in my 20s and again in my 30s (different cruise lines, different jobs), and saw a lot of really interesting, crazy things going on. When I was deciding on the first novel storyline, this seemed like an obvious choice. Since I am new to writing, I felt it would be easier to write about a world I had personally experienced - even though the story itself is fiction, I think having been on ships helped lend colour and realism to the book.

2.       Who is your favorite character in the book?
It would have to be the main character, Ellie. Although the other characters are fun in different ways, I’ve really learned a lot as a writer by exploring Ellie’s personality, writing character maps, and deciding why she makes the decisions she does. She doesn’t make the best decisions with men, but she is a nice girl just doing her best to cope with the cards she’s been dealt!

3.       Which came first, the title or the novel?
Definitely the novel. The title has changed a number of times. The working title was ‘Ellie and the Crew’ (but people thought it sounded like a pre-teen book), then ‘The Lust Boat’ (but someone else had released a novel with the same name, and that was erotica. She said she didn’t mind if I use it, but it didn’t work for the genre)… Then it became ‘Cruisy in Love’, then ‘Cruzy in Love’ (because the relationship to the word ‘crazy’ wasn’t obvious), then ‘Let’s go Cruzy’… before my friend said “Cath, that is the worst book title in the history of the world. I hate it.” Hahaha, he came up with the title ‘Sex, Lies, and Cruising the Caribbean’, which I shortened to ‘Sex, Lies, and Cruising’. It was a long journey to the title! I nearly died when I saw how many other books were called ‘Sex, Lies, and something’, but it was too late. That ship had sailed. Pun intended.

4.       What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I have to be honest, I have edited the book that many times (around ten full edits), and the last one was the most significant, so it’s all become a bit of a blur. I can’t even remember sometimes which scenes have stayed or been deleted! Still, I like one of the last scenes, where Ellie makes a really important decision – because she is no longer driven by her heart, which was really important for her to do after all the bad experiences she’d had from trusting men she liked.

Having said that, I also like one of the later sex scenes, which is kind of a group sex scene. I know it sounds funny to say that, but writing sex felt very awkward as I went through the book. It was necessary, in order to be true to what happens on ships, but it still felt weird. Both my mentor (James) and my editor (Mac) said my sex scenes were boring and lacked emotion/reaction – that they were very ‘this happened and then this happened’. James said that the sex scenes in the bok needed to increase in intensity, so that the readers go on a journey with Ellie… but he kept helping me out by editing what I had written. Then, I was writing along in one of the last chapters, and suddenly my characters decided they were going to do this crazy thing – which wasn’t in my outline – and I just went with it. It’s not something I’ve experienced personally, so I literally just wrote out of my imagination. James read it (he read each chapter as I wrote it and sent feedback) and said, “Phwoar, what happened there? That’s the best sex scene in the book!” Bit awkward to have that discussion with a 70 year old man, but I was happy J

5.       Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
To write every day, whether you feel like it or not… and to do really in-depth character work before you start. It felt boring to me and I just wanted to get on with writing the book, but I had to go back later and do more character work, because my editor said the character’s reactions to things weren’t realistic, probably because I didn’t know them well enough.

6.       What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Everything. One of my best friends, who is the most talented graphic designer I know, designed it. Then an expert photoshopper I know in Tunisia did some colour manipulation work on it (the original model had red hair and lacked depth of colour in her lips and cheeks). We went through several iterations of it, changing fonts, colours, and even the positioning of the model at the last moment – to make her off-centre. Many people have responded really well to the cover, so that’s exciting.

7.       What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?
I have to be honest – although authors say that if you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write… this is one of those years where I really don’t have time to read. I also don’t watch TV. I still work four days a week, I have a three year old, and I write or work on promo nearly every night. But when I’m on holidays at Christmas, I’ll look for something very different to what I write – maybe an edge-of-your-seat thriller or something! Any suggestions?

8.       What was your favorite book in 2014?
It wasn’t a new release, but I did love every moment of The Power Trip by Jackie Collins.

9.       What’s up next for you?
Apart from spending lots of time promoting this book, I've started working on the sequel, 'Love, Drugs, and New York'. It follows Ellie on the next leg of her journey. I don't want to give too much away, except to say that she feels she has finally found her perfect situation - with a great man and a great job - but as time goes on, she suddenly wonders if that's what she actually wants. I've written the outline and the first few chapters, but I'm just waiting for the frenetic pace of my first book's promotional period to die down before I can get into it.

I'm also working on selling 'Sex, Lies, and Cruising' as a TV series. My publicist in LA has a contact in a major studio who is very excited about the prospect. She feels it's something that would work well in the industry right now, and would be good as a half hour comedy format (think 'Sex and the City' at sea) - and wants to option the book to try and sell it... I've also had a couple of emails from people who have seen my publicity and want to talk about TV adaptation too. However, I want to take it slow. It's always been my ultimate dream, even before I started writing the book (I have a degree in Film and Television Production), but I want to be sure I understand what I'm getting into and the best way to go about it... There's no room for mistakes with this part!

10.   Is there anything that you would like to add?
I’ve had lots of promotion relating to my former work on cruise ships (which totalled less than a year, despite reports it was up to seven years!). I’m happy and grateful to have publicity (it’s what I was looking for), but I want people to know that I’m a writer who happens to have worked in the same job as my character and I could have written about any topic. It’s not a cruise ship exposé or a thinly veiled autobiography. While a few juicy bits from real life made it into the book, this book is fiction and I’ve worked really hard at creating something which is entertaining, easy to read, engrossing, and well executed. It’s not highbrow literature, it’s chick lit. But I want people to get lost in it, and even if they don’t agree with the character’s decisions, to at least enjoy the process of watching her learn and grow, have a few laughs, and even get a bit turned on, along the way!

Syrian-American, Lydia Fadoul, has spent a year waiting for her fiance’ to return from war in Iraq, only to discover that he is broken by trauma and the devastating effects of PTSD. Just when he finally agrees to seek help, he takes his own life and leaves behind a story of murder, betrayal, and mystery. In her second, contemporary fiction novel since Budapest, Tiffani Burnett-Velez weaves a fast-paced literary tale about the rumors we believe and the prejudices we create in order to protect our hearts from the truth.

What the what?!?! The ending left me needing more! To some the ending may provide closure but I wanted to know what happens between Marcus and Lydia after the story breaks. The book starts with Lydia saying goodbye to her fiance at his funeral. Thomas was a marine and had been accused of murdering two fellow marines. Lydia knew there was more to the story. She confides in a report that served as a marine himself, Marcus. The reader can feel the chemistry between the two as they try to find out the truth. What really happened to Thomas in Iraq? Wil the truth finally be told? Great quick read! I give this one 4 stars!

Lydia stays there for several minutes, feeling the love inside her heart seep into the earth and down into his coffin. She pictures it making the grass grow in the spring and feeding the
trees, and she feels her tears drying up. Finally, standing to her feet, and dusting herself off, she blows him another kiss and promises to come back again soon. She walks to her car and drives the short distance to her home, passing the Victorian era neighborhoods in which she played and grew up and walked with Thomas the months when their lives intersected at these same corners and points of the city they both loved.
