Holly Spinatsch, a curious and rebellious tomboy, was forewarned by her siblings that if she didn’t make her bed, she would be taken away to The Children’s Horrible House…and indeed she was. On her search for kinship in this seemingly haunted jail like mansion, she discovers a mystery lurking and breathing, crying out for discovery. N Jane Quackenbush
 N. Jane Quackenbush is a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University. She lives in a horrible house filled with mystery and fun in St. Augustine, Florida, a place she finds a lot of material by which she is inspired. Many places mentioned in her books are based on actual haunted buildings, star-filled planetariums and magical gardens deep within The Nation’s Oldest City. N. Jane Quackenbush has also written the following Children’s Picture Books: The Rocket Ship Bed Trip The Pirate Ship Bed Trip The Afternoon Moon and many more books in the works!

What gave you the inspiration for The Children’s Horrible House?

The quick answer? My brothers and sisters. When I was little they would threaten to send me to The Children’s Horrible House when I didn’t want to clean my room or make my bed. They even sang a song to go with their intimidation. It went like this:

The Children’s Horrible House

The Children’s Horrible House

Where you work all day and never never play…

The Children’s Horrible House.

They would add new verses and I wasn’t sure if they were making it up or if they were serious. Many people have siblings and most siblings have interesting stories to tell about their childhood. One day another author and I were sitting at an event and she pulled out a sandwich and since she is lactose intolerant, I was happy to eat her cheese. She discarded her wilted lettuce but because I was so hungry, I ate that too. That disgusting old cheese and wilted lettuce became the impetus for the building of this story. That meal was included in my description at The Children’s Horrible House, which strangely enough, is quite magnificent.

As I explored the idea of constructing a whole story around this song, the backdrop and settings came alive within the secret gardens and palatial buildings of our nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, FL. However, I did not set the story here. On a trip to Kalispell, Montana, I toured The Conrad Mansion. The attic at the top of that grand home spoke volumes to me as I walked through the gigantic play space filled with stuffed animal trophies as well as a huge doll house that was built with more detail than anything I have ever seen. A lot of the background story for the book came from this place in Montana but I purposely left the location ambiguous because I wanted readers to think that The Children’s Horrible House could be anywhere...even close to their homes!

It was still dark when we were let out in front of a huge flaming gate. Well, the gate wasn’t actually flaming, but on each side, a gas lantern was lit and with the smudges on my eternally foggy glasses, it made the gate appear ablaze. The shiny black metal not only reflected the flames, but it seemed to make the whole gate glow in unison with the flickering flames. A very tall brick wall covered in thorny bushes grew even higher than the wall, spreading out of sight in both directions. Major Whoopins punched in a code that opened the gates.
We proceeded down a long black driveway lined with spooky cowering trees offering a creepy welcome. Ahead I saw a building. Even though it was still not quite morning, the sun had started to peak over the horizon giving us just the right light to see. It was a three-story maroon colored mansion that looked like it could either be a haunted Victorian house or the fanciest jail ever constructed. I wasn’t sure. It looked like a jail because it had bars on the windows, but it also looked like a fancy house because it had white painted porches on the first two stories. The roof line was very steep and had a couple of chimney stacks. The front right side of the building had a square turret that made it look nice, but frightening. At the top of the turret, I noticed a bar-less window with lace curtains. As I stared, I felt someone staring back. A woman’s form moved from behind the curtain, and then she was gone.
“Who was that?” I asked, mostly to myself, but I guess Major Whoopins heard me because he answered me saying in a thick, gruff voice, “You’d best mind yo’ own bidness and you gonna git along just fine, ya’ hear?”
“Yes, sir!” I said hoping to stay on his good side. He gave me a reluctant smile but I saw it.
“See that door?” he asked. “You go on and git up there and wait fo’ Mr. Ree.”
Who was Mr. Ree? I wondered.

Sighing, I stare down at the headband until a shadow falls over me. “That’s quite the contraption.” I close my eyes. It’s Zane. Great, he saw the spectacle, too. Will my shame never cease? Well, there goes the courting. He’ll never want to be with a pariah like me now. “It was a stupid idea to wear it.” He steps to the side and sits next to the headband. He picks it up, turns it over between his fingers. “Was it? I think it’s pretty revolutionary, actually.” “That’s my point. If I could do that with a simple holo-mask, then anyone could.” Zane purses his lips. He knows I’m right. If I was able to program a mask to make my face look just as Modified and Altered as any Aristocrat’s, then what’s to stop one of the Disfavored from doing it? A mask like that undermines the system. Eventually he smiles, apprehensive, and meets my eyes. “Well, they don’t have Programmers as talented and ingenious as you out there. So it’s a good thing you’re on the side of the Aristocracy, isn’t it?” I snort and look away. “I’m a threat to them.” He places a hand on my knee, and it makes my stomach go aflutter, despite my bad mood. “It’s good that you’re aware of it.” My floating stomach sinks, and I shake my head with a bitter scoff. “Is that supposed to comfort me?” His fingers tighten, drawing my leg open so that our knees touch and he leans closer to me. “Not at all,” he whispers in a spine-tingling purr, eyes alight with secret sparkle. “It should scare you. It should scare you and enliven you. It should make you want to start a fire. Because you can.” Confused by his words and what he’s doing to my body, I stare at him for a long time. He sounds like Dad, spouting nonsense like this all the time. But, unlike Dad, Zane has a wild and dangerous charisma on his side. His touch and tone stir my insides, make me want to get up and run, make me want to do what he asks me to do.

Read below for an excerpt from the book:
Strong arms wrap tightly around my waist and tug me back to a warm, muscular chest. Asher lifts his hand and moves my hair to one side, over my shoulder, so he can have access to my neck. I tilt my head to the right, making it easy for his lips to gently brush the sensitive skin under my left ear before leaving a trail of soft kisses.
“Someday, when this is all over, I promise you’ll have the peace you’re craving. It will be just me and you, siren,” he vows quietly.
I sigh in contentment. “That’s all I want, Ash.”
“Then I’ll move Heaven and earth to make sure you get it."
I turn to face him and push up on my tiptoes. Leaning in, I give him a slow, molten kiss. I push everything I feel for him into the gesture. I want to fill every space of his soul, the way he does mine.
It’s like I’m trying to climb inside his heart and live there. I’m not sure how long we stay like this, in our own private, perfect moment, but I never want to leave.
Breathlessly, I pull away. My eyes find Asher’s. “What is it you want the most?”
Asher’s intense gaze holds mine, taking my breath away. “Redemption.”

“Who we were had washed away with the summer. Who we are was yet to be seen.” Summer school at Alcott High was only supposed to gain Sadie Peters extra credit, nothing more. Her goal wasn’t to make friends, or gain the attention of the most popular football player, yet she managed both. Her life was cruising along on course … until that summer. Could a simple stint in a different school change her identity completely and introduce her to love for the first time? How would that affect her relationship with Lily, her best friend? Hopefully their friendship was strong enough to make it through the tumultuous summer. Sadie learns that great things come with change, but sometimes memories of the past are hardest to part with.

I entered the lunchroom and met Nash at the same table as yesterday. He gave me a huge smile but that was all. No hug or kiss on the cheek. Okay, fine. I set down my lunch tray that held pizza, an apple and an orange juice. Not exactly healthy but I tried. Nash sat with me and ate his pizza but he didn’t engage in conversation with me. Instead he sat and talked to Oliver and some other kid named Henry, who I learned played ball with them. I was secure enough to realize that Nash and I weren’t a couple. We were just getting to know each other. So, I would just need to cool it and not get upset by his ignoring me. I mean really was he ignoring me on purpose or perhaps just busy with his guy friends? I chose the latter. “Oh, you sit here too?” I looked up to see the shaggy haired boy sit across from me. I scowled at him and said, “I was invited to sit here. Why are you here?” I dropped my pizza on my plate and realized I had an audience. All the boys at my table were now watching me engage in a fight with this rude ass across from me. “Last I checked this was my teams table. Is that okay with you or should I ask Nash for permission?” What a complete jerk-face! “So I see you’ve met Nolan, my brother.” Nash laughed. “Wait! What? This kid is your brother?” I asked confused. Nolan laughed and said, “The one and only Nolan Rylan at your service. Twin brother of the oh so fabulous Nash Rylan. And before you say ‘but you don’t look like him’ it’s because we’re not identical twins.” I found myself with my mouth hanging open and closed it quickly. I couldn’t believe it. Nash had a twin brother. The more I stared at Nolan the more I noticed slight similarities in their appearance. Nash had dark hair and so did Nolan. Their smiles were the same; big white teeth grins. Their eye color wasn’t the same though. Nash’s were crystal blue and Nolan’s were honey brown. Nash dressed casual like his personality, easy going. Nolan was crisp and clean. And from his personality, it didn’t seem to match. He really threw me when he put on his glasses and pulled out our homework assignment right there at the table. He leaned back, ignoring me with ease, and read. I couldn’t help but stare at him. He wasn’t a football player. No way. “You play football?” I inquired. He looked up from his book and I felt a strange sensation. The other guys went back to talking and ignoring me. “Why is that hard to believe? Do I look like a nerd to you?” I looked at his body. No. Not really. He was fit enough. But he was slightly nerdy. Between his well-manicured nails to his brown high end shoes, it was hard to picture him in a football uniform. “You just dress so…so,” I struggled. “So, nicely perhaps? Not like a jock, I know. But thanks for noticing.” He pulled his book higher and did as the other boys did; ignored me. Excerpt from Who We Were by Christy Sloat © Anchor Group Publishing
