Schledia’s Top Ten

(Books and Movies)

Thank you, Beth, for inviting me to share my top ten. I thought I would share the books and movies that fall into that category for me. I LOVE seeing books come to life in a movie, but I still crave reading the books even more than seeing another person’s interpretation of the characters and scenery. Books allow for your own imagination to soar, so in my opinion they are always better.

Wildflowers by yours truly. Okay, so I know that many people would say, “Of course, your own work is your favorite; it’s yours!” But honestly, I fell completely in love with the characters and their story as it trickled from my mind and flowed through my fingertips onto my keyboard. Tragic love stories are my all-time favorite, and Wildflowers embodies everything I love about books in that genre. If you happen to enjoy beautiful love stories that aren’t always peachy, then you should check it out, and this week from March 25-29, the kindle version of Wildflowers is on sale for 99 cents on amazon!

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I was completely drawn in by Heathcliff. I love his dark nature. I love how (despite the darkness in him) he loves Cathy so much that he is haunted by her even after her death.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Okay, so technically it’s not a book, but the tragedy in their passion for one another rips my heart out and draws so many emotions to the surface. It’s simply beautiful to me.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I adore Mr. Darcy. I want to live in that time frame with him, but until someone invents a time machine to take me back, I have to settle for finding my own time portal through the pages of her book.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Another beautiful love story with its own tragic events. Nicholas Sparks is great at writing love stories that make your heart melt. I cried so many times I lost count!

If Only. If you haven’t watched this movie with Jennifer Love Hewitt, you’ve got to watch it! It is such a wonderful, tragic story that really goes deep in your heart and makes you realize how important it is to truly LOVE those in your life.

Bella. I loved this movie so much that I bought it for a friend. It’s not a love story, yet it is. It depicts a different kind of love outside of romantic love.

17 Again. Yes, yes, I know that this movie is a comedy, but whenever I need a good laugh, this is one of the ones I go for. I can slip it in my DVD player and expect some of those deep laughs that hurt so much you cry!

Becoming Jane. Another movie that I loved so much that I bought it as a gift for my editor. She loves the classics, and Jane Austen is one of her favorites. This is a very real, beautiful, and tragic love story.

The Cutting Edge: Chasing the Dream. I admit it; I’m a fan of ice dancers. I think what they are able to do is beautiful. When you combine my love of watching individuals and couples glide across the ice and my weakness for love stories into a great movie, you’ve got me hooked!

What made you decide to begin writing?

It was a dark and stormy night ...

No, really! Well, to be more specific, I was reading a book about a dark and stormy night. A truck driver's truck was broken down at a gas station. There were zombies. The story intrigued me, and it was disguised as a comic book. Basically, it was a little book with lots of pictures. And it was really cool.

So I tried to write my own. It was, quite possibly, the most insane story ever written. There were zombies. There were also aliens. There was a bank heist gone bad, and a group of not-so-happy bank robbers holed up in an abandoned gas station fighting off both the zombies and aliens.

Then it got really weird. The second half of the book took place in the future, where the aliens have taken over most of the planet. The last remaining humans are fighting back. Oh yeah, did I say the aliens had four arms? They did. This was new. I didn't have this in the first part of the book. But who cared? I was thirteen and enjoying myself.

I actually found a copy of this original story about a year ago. My parents kept it. I can't imagine what they thought when they read it, but I do remember what they told me. They said, "This is good. You should write more." They were clearly lying about the "good" part. Or maybe not. Maybe a failed bank heist involving aliens and zombies is pretty good for a 13-year-old. I don't know

But my parents' comment was all I needed. Just a little encouragement from some people I looked up to.

From there, it was all downhill. The story ideas just kept coming and coming, and I had to write them down to get them out of my head. It was a lot of work. Lots of blood, sweat and tears were poured into stories that have never seen the light of day. But some have. And I'm excited to keep it going.

The Grimm Chronicles Volume 2

200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm changed everything.

With the help of a little magic, fairy tales were made real, manifesting all over the world. Charming princes. Gold-hunting dwarfs. Terrible step-mothers. Heroic animals.

Then, slowly, they began to change. Everyone—from Prince Charming to the old miller—grew more evil. Corrupted. A hero was chosen to stop them, hunting them down one by one and destroying them with the help of a magic pen and a special rabbit assistant.

For 200 years, the hero’s magic pen has been passed on from generation to generation. The newest hero is Alice Goodenough, an 18-year-old junior from Washington High School. While her friends spent their summer working and having fun, Alice found herself doing battle with creatures most human beings don’t even realize exist. A giant snake. A blood-sucking prince. A terrifying half-man, half-hedgehog. Dastardly dwarfs intent on mind-controlling everyone who uses a cell phone.

Now, senior year has begun. With it comes a new challenge at school, where bullies have grown bolder and classes more challenging. As if that’s not enough, Alice must face off against a collection of Corrupted who all share a terrible secret, one that might awaken a creature capable of doing untold damage. To uncover the secret, Alice will have to face off against a man-eating lizard, a bloodthirsty sea captain, and a mysterious wizard who can see into the future …

Join us on the journey, which allows true love to surface despite obvious obstacles, fearful hatred to emerge with a vengeance and betrayal of even the most loyal of friends. As lives are left in tattered pieces, everyone is forced to choose.... Will the group fall apart at the seams or will the strong bonds of everlasting friendship withstand the fire of deceit?
Paperback, 234 pages

Jennifer Brown-Thomas is a married, TCU graduate and mother of one. New to the film and novel industries, she has written, directed and is currently in distribution for her first film starring Emmy award winning actress, Leann Hunley. As well as having her first book, a spin-off of the film, Blissful Lies published by Helm Publishing. Taking the film industry by storm at such a young age has propelled her into a career which will surely be a success. Following closely will be her newest venture and empire, LBT (Limberis, Brown-Thomas) Enterprises which will launch a fragrance, children s clothing line and more. Supported by the unyielding support of her friends and extremely large family, she found it easy to dream big. Be watching for more Brown-Thomas novels the next on its way to you is Vindictive Grounds.

This book just got real! Blissful lies was wonderful and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a good quick read.

Jennifer Brown-Thomas tells the story of a group of very close college friends who have been friends most of their lives. These college students attend an elite Ivy league school in California. Most of them have the life everyone dreams of; trust fund, living in a mansion and driving a fancy car. These young adults are approaching college graduation and are looking forward to the next stage in life. This group of friends spend every moment they can together and they think they know everything there is to know about each other. When the relationship with Addison and Jackson first started I was a little disappointed, because I have a son and a best friend and that idea kinda creeps me out! Just being honest!

When Addison, the mother to Parker, agreed to chaperon the school trip to she had no idea what she was going to discover. The author has the reader waiting on the obvious secret to be revealed but when the tables are turned on the entire group, WOW!

The secrets that are divulged are unbelievable! I do wish a few loose ends were tied up. What happen to Shay, did she confess to what she remembered? What happen to Calvin? Even with the unanswered questions it was still a great book! I give it 4 stars!

Thanks again to Guest Reviewer, Tiffany!! Great review!!

Book Blast: Blue Hearts of Mars (Nicole Grotepas)

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Retta Heikkinen knows the unspoken rule of society: love between androids and humans is forbidden. A simple enough edict until Hemingway Koskinen spends an evening charming her with his intense gaze, bewitching smile, and sparkling conversation that hints at so much more than the usual obsessions of high school boys. Rules were meant to be cast aside, especially when love beckons.

If only it were as simple as being in love.

Trouble is brewing, not just for Hemingway--for all androids. Secrets have been kept, lies propagated, and Retta soon discovers that a frightening future awaits thousands of androids if she doesn’t do something to stop it. Worse yet, she will lose the one love she’s ever endangered herself for: Hemingway.

Praise

"Nothing like I've read before. A true original story! Everything is so well described. Now if they could make a follow up book and movie, that would be great!" ~Mrs. Z (Amazon)

"I was addicted to this book from the beginning. Life on Mars was very real and not at all a sci fi world I didn't understand . . . I found myself rooting for Retta and Hemingway from the very beginning. Easy reading, couldn't put it down and had it read in a weekend. Waiting for a sequel!" ~TNielsen (Amazon)

"The ending of this book is exceptional. While it was different from what I imagined, the way the author brought in a shocking revelation was amazing. I probably reread the last chapter 3 times letting it sink in and the meaning behind it. It was truly beautiful . . . I would love to see more of Retta and Hemingway!" ~Kat Meyer, (Goodreads)

"I love how the author populated Mars . . . so descriptive and comprehensive . . . I could clearly picture everything as if I was seeing the movie &/or was along for the ride. . . . Retta, the main character, is strong, opinionated, and a great champion for her cause." ~Megan (Amazon)

"I had been in the worst reading slump ever and came across this on Goodreads and thought I'd give it a try. Well, I was pleasantly surprised on how funny and exciting and mysterious it was . . . Mei, Retta's bff, had me laughing out loud quite a bit as well as Retta herself. I'd definitely hang out with those two." ~Deanneluvbooks (Goodreads)

All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis right before she has to finish the job… by hand.
Now Aurora’s only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire. And if he’s a vampire, will she be forced to kill him?

There was an electronic crackle, and a voice filled the room. “Welcome to initiation, Aurora. This test will last as long as you want”

I wanted out of this insane asylum. I rushed to the door and tried yanking down the silver handle, but it didn’t budge.

I turned. My eyes raced over every square inch of the enclosed room. There was a metal table in the very center. I walked up to it and looked down at the weapons laid on top: a handgun, crossbow, hunting knife, ax, and wooden stake.

The intercom crackled back to life.

“Once the subject has fed on your blood you will need to choose a weapon and finish him off.”

“What? No! I’m not killing anyone. Melcher? Let me out of here.”

“Now!” I screamed.

“Good luck, Aurora.”

I expected something horrible to occur after he signed off, but nothing happened.

I circled the table and kept glancing at the door. Trapped inside a windowless room with weapons that made my skin crawl. Fantastic. There wasn’t even a clock to track the minutes dragging by. If they planned on keeping me locked up for so long they could’ve at least put a chair inside.

I folded my arms over my chest and looked at the two-way mirror.

“What’s the matter with Dracula? Can’t find his cape?” I chuckled, but it sounded nervous.

I walked over to the far corner of the room and leaned my back against the wall.

There was a hollow knock at the door across the room. It pounded three times in succession, producing an eerie, drawn-out echo.

I wanted to crack a joke, but something didn’t feel right. My heart pounded its way up to my throat and I’d barely swallowed when the door flew open. A middle-aged man in flannel was thrown in. The door slammed shut behind him. He nearly fell on the floor, but caught himself. Long greasy hair covered his face as he bent forward. When he righted himself, I saw that his cheeks were sunken, lips bared over yellow teeth. He snarled and spit leaked out the corners of his mouth.

I stood up straight.

Excerpt #3

from Altered Souls

Logan’s lips slowly caressed mine sending an electrical current through me, but he didn’t let his lips land in any one place. Instead, he teased me by gliding his lips along my neck and then down to my collarbone before quickly stopping. He nuzzled my neck, and I could take no more. A small moan escaped from my lips as he traced his teeth along my flesh.

“Too much?” he asked, pulling away. His blue eyes pierced mine with an intensity that frightened me, but in a way that I longed for.

“Not at all,” I breathed. “But you seem so—“

He shook his head, pressing his finger softly against my lips. “I’ve thought about being with you for years, and I’m going to make it as memorable as possible.”

A smile spread across his lips, and his eyes danced over my fully clothed body. I would have to change that.

“Well, it’s working,” I whispered, bringing him back down to me.

“You’re the only woman I’ve ever wanted,” he breathed, as he pressed his body into mine. My hands slid along his back until I found the end of his shirt. I pulled it up and began kissing his chest with a desperation I’d never felt before.

“I love you,” I moaned.

Logan cupped my face and brought it to his. The longing in his eyes only grew with every second that passed between us. He ran his fingers through my hair as my mind turned to mush.

My fingers traced along his shoulders, and I gently pushed him back. He sat up removing his shirt, with his jeans hanging just low enough to make my heart flutter. His legs straddled me as I lay on the bed, and I admired how absolutely divine he was. I didn’t ever want this moment to end.

His hands hovered over my body, and the aching inside became almost unbearable. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in. I slowly let it out and opened my eyes to see his lips quirk into a slight smile.

“Yeah?” he asked, grinning.

“I don’t think I can take much more,” I whispered, my breathing ragged.

His eyes danced along my body before he scooped me into his arms, allowing me to roll on top of him.I placed my hand under his neck, bringing his lips to mine knowing that our souls would soon become one.
