5 Star Review: The Hallowed Ones (Laura Bickle)

The Hallowed Ones (The Hallowed Ones, #1)Paperback, 311 pages
Published September 25th 2012 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.

Incredible, Creepy, Fantastic, Unable to Put down, read in one day, one of my favorite books yet……Those are just some of the words that came to mind as I was reading this book. This book was so unlike what I had imagined….It was BETTER!!!!! The Amish VS vampires was just so mesmerizing…The power of faith in this book was just incredible. I had chills the entire time I was reading this book. I am a sucker for survival stories and this may have been one of the best ones I have read this year. Not only is it about survival but about faith and I just absolutely loved every moment.

The book begins with a young Amish girl Katie and her friend, Elijah just spending the day performing their daily chores. Katie and Elijah are very excited about what the Amish people call Rumspringa. This is when the young people get to spend time on the “Outside” before choosing the Amish way for life. Katie was very excited about the chance to live life normally and enjoy simple things like drinking a coke and going to the movies.  Little did they know what the future held for them and the experiences that were headed their way. They would not be experiencing Rumspringa anytime soon……

A helicopter crashes into their little community and Katie runs to it to try and save any survivors. She does find a survivor but as she tries to save him someone or something pulls the man back into the fire….and all Katie can see is glowing red eyes as they disappear. It is at that moment that Katie realizes that something is really wrong…..

News from the Outside claims that there is an unrest happening and people are dying all over the world. The radio does not describe what is causing it but Katie knows…m for fear of what She has feared the worst and she uncovers the horrible secret with the help of a mysterious stranger that she saves from death.
The stranger, Alex, was discovered on the outside of the community fence and the Elders wanted to kill him for fear of the Outside but Katie insisted they leave him and let God decide his future. Later that night Katie comes back and takes Alex to her barn where she gives him medicine and brings him back to health.
Alex and Katie discover the true secret of the unrest…They discover WHAT the evil is….they discover what is causing millions of people to die and they know they have to fight for their survival.

“Something roiled in the grass. I could see it moving toward me, at terrible speed, zigzagging violently through the stalks. It kept low as it rushed toward me, but I spied a glimmer of red, like the eyes of the terrible creatures in the Laundromat, sliding through the shadows. I ran.”

This book is by far one of my favorite survival books that I have ever read. I usually take about 3 days to read a book but I read this one in one day and could not put it down. This book was incredible. Laura Bickle weaves a tale that will keep you in suspense, have your hair standing on ends, and turning pages long into the night. If you are a fan of supernatural and suspense then you have to read this book. It is just phenomenal. By far a 5 star book and I am DYING to get my hands on the sequel…I can’t wait to see where Laura takes this story……

Summary from Goodreads:
Seventeen-year-old Justin's anemic blood is a blessing. Or a curse. It all depends on who you ask.
To most of the immortal Vie, his blood is a scourge: untouchable and useless. To some Vie, his blood is a drug. To Justin, it’s something that gets him in a lot of trouble. Being poisoned by a Vie is just one example. His sister getting kidnapped is another. Whether it’s being coerced by a deluded cult leader, or negotiating with Alex—an Vie scientist addicted to Anemie blood—Justin struggles to keep every mutated drop of blood he’s got.
His fight for survival gets more complicated when he meets Alex’s slave, Cara. Despite coming from different worlds, they’re both prisoners, at risk of being drained by a hungry Vie any moment. When she risks her own neck to help Justin find his sister, he's left with a terrifying choice.
Saving what's left of humanity. Saving his sister. Saving the girl he loves. Or sticking a stake in Alex’s chest. Justin can't decide which option will get him killed first.

Sarah J. Maas

Sarah J. Maas lives in Southern California, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much coffee, and watches absolutely rubbish TV shows. When she's not busy writing YA fantasy novels, she can be found exploring the California coastline.
Her debut YA epic fantasy novel, THRONE OF GLASS, will be published by Bloomsbury on August 7th, 2012.

This book TOTALLY rocked my face!!!! I mean OMG!!! The first in the series, Throne of Glass was just the beginning. It was just a stepping stone to the amazing, fantastic, AWESOME book that is called Crown of Midnight. I mean WOW!

I am not really sure where to start!! I will say that Calaena may be one of my favorite characters in a book series ever. Ok I have to say it….I LOVE THAT SHE IS FEMALE AND KICKS ASS!!!! I also love when she competes against big strong men that think they can just overtake her and then they end up begging for their life. Yeah I can’t help it…That’s awesome. She has so much intensity in her and is so protective of the ones she loves. That may be the quality that is most attractive about her. She loves fiercely and to the point of uncontrollable.

“She was Adarlan’s Assassin—she was Calaena Sardothien. She would not fail. The Gods owed her.”

The picks up as Calaena is beginning her role as the King’s Champion, also known as the new royal assassin. The king has sent her on several missions to kill people that he believes are against him. Calaena pretends to perform these duties while trying to gain information against the king.

Princess Nehemia is also a pivotal character in this book and her relationship with Calaena is so strong and unbreakable. Nehemia also begins to find herself becoming closer to Prince Dorian. Their relationship begins to take on a different meaning and was very unexpected for me yet I found myself rooting for them.

The relationship with Chaol and Calaena is just relentlessly beautiful. I love their characters together and Sarah Maas writes their engagements together in such a way that I find myself smiling and feeling exactly what they are both feeling. I re-read several paragraphs just because it was so breathtaking. Their love is the definition of true love.

I wish that I could talk more and more about this book but there are so many surprises and some are incredible monumental moments and some are completely heart-breaking. They are what made this book so incredible for me. A few of them I never saw coming and actually had to stop reading and just stare at the book for a while. Yes it was that surprising to me. This is truly one of my most favorite series yet and I am literally DYING to get my hands on the conclusion.

I do hope that Sarah Maas has many more plans for future books because I will read ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that she writes. Her imagination and world building are incredible. Her books have the perfect mix of intensity, mystery, romance, and suspense that make for a 5 star book.

WOW! This book was intense!!! I do not think I have ever been addicted to anything except maybe facebook:) This book allows readers to get a little understanding into the life of an addict. Addiction is real and it is not always drugs or alcohol.

The main charter, Lily, is addicted to sex. In the book Lily is now 21 and in college but she has been struggling since the age of 13. She comes from a very wealthy family. Lily lives with her pretend boyfriend Loren. Loren is also from a very wealthy family and struggling with an alcohol addiction. They have agreed to pretend to be a couple to hide their real lives from their families.

You can image the things that go on between the two of these young people! I am a little torn about the ending....hmmm....  I was left wondering about Lily. I am really hoping for a sequel! If not then I will create my own wonderful ending in my mind! I give this book 4 stars!
