Publication date: December 16th 2013
Genres: Adult, Horror, Paranormal

In Darkness We Must Abide is the epic saga of one young woman caught in the dangerous world of the creatures of the night.

Vanora is haunted by the night her faith in those she loved was shattered. After fleeing Houston, she takes refuge in Austin and creates a normal life with her roommate Rhonda. Despite her newfound happiness, Vanora is tormented by dreams and visions of an enigmatic and dangerous albino vampire.
When her world starts to fall apart and Armando comes back into her life to warn her that her brother is in danger, Vanora realizes that she can’t escape her destiny. Evil threatens her family, and she must venture into the darkness to save everyone she cares about.
As she seeks to uncover the truth about the terrifying albino vampire and her purpose in his schemes, Vanora starts to realize that the man she loves most may be her greatest enemy. Rhiannon Frater delivers a chilling adventure once again with this multi-part epic serial with a dynamic cast, old school vampires, bloody action, a smoldering forbidden love, and a terrifying villain set against the backdrop of a modern day vampire war.
This book includes all five episodes of the second season of the serial.

(Excepted from Episode 1)

With his presence still sizzling on her skin and his hazel eyes still haunting her thoughts, Vanora pondered the words that Armando had spoken in his silky Spanish accent.

You must go home, he had said.

Hugging herself, she gazed into the darkness surrounding her, wondering if Armando still lingered in the shadows observing her. That he had sought her out both thrilled and terrified her. When she had first seen him standing on the lighted path of her apartment complex, the mere sight of his enigmatic smile had set her heart aflutter. But now that he had slipped back into the darkness, her heart beat with fear.

Could she go back to Houston and face all she had run from? Could she forget the evils she had beheld on her eighteenth birthday? Could she just abandon the life she had meticulously created for herself over the last two years and return to the mansion that was haunted by death and pain?

You must go home.

Armando’s words echoed in her mind.

Vanora lifted a hand to brush away her white-blond hair and turned to face the dark waters of the swimming pool that glimmered in the moonlight.

To go home meant she would at last cast aside her trepidation and face the monsters of her nightmares. Was she strong enough to do so? Was she strong enough to go home and save the ones she loved?

With a surrendering sigh, she admitted to herself that it was time to return to her childhood home. It was difficult to concede, but her reluctance to return was partially because she feared allowing Armando into her life once more. Though the creatures that dwelled in the darkness were terrifying, it was Armando who surely frightened her.

Only he could truly steal away her heart and soul…

In addition to writing supernatural thrillers for adults, Jeff Gunhus is also the author of the Middle Grade/YA series The Templar Chronicles. (www.jacktemplar.com) The first book, Jack Templar Monster Hunter, was written in an effort to get his reluctant reader eleven-year old son excited about reading. It worked and a new series was born and recognized as a 2012 Forward Reviews Book of the Year Finalist. Jeff has been a Stephen King and Dean Koontz fan since he was a kid reading their novels under the covers at night. Seeing Night Chill next to King and Koontz on the Amazon Bestseller lists has been a surreal experience. He leads an active lifestyle in Maryland with his wife Nicole and five incredible kids. In rare moments of quiet, he can be found in the back of the City Dock Cafe in Annapolis working on his next novel.

Nate Huckley leaned forward against the steering wheel, eyes searching the colorless brick
buildings that slid by on either side of the street. He glanced at his watch and shook his
head. He couldn’t believe he was spending valuable time, time he didn’t have, looking for a hardware store in this back woods, one-factory, Pennsylvania town.
Huckley spotted the store. The boy back at the gas station had stuttered like a
moron, but his directions had been good enough. Huckley pulled into the small gravel
parking lot next to the concrete tilt-up building on which the last remnants of the word
“Hardware” clung in tall flaking letters. The lot was empty except for a beat-up VW Bug, more rust than metal, squatted in the far corner. Huckley checked his time and felt the anger churn harder in his stomach.
Grabbing the roll of tape, he marched through the parking lot, the hard soles on
his leather boots crunching the small rocks into the dirt. Like stepping on bugs, he thought to
himself. He smiled and started to twist his foot on each step and stomp down a little harder.
By the time he reached the double-wide glass doors that faced the street he felt a little better.
Until he saw the sign.
CLOSED.
Bullshit. Huckley pounded on the glass door with the tape. He leaned down, opened
the mail slot with his forefinger and shouted, “Hey! Get out here. I know you’re still there,
I can see your car.”
He stood up and kept beating the door until he saw a light go on in the back room.
A smile spread across his face. He always got his way. Always.
The door in the back opened and Huckley saw the outline of a person walk down
the aisle. Huckley grinned a little wider. He’d expected an old man, but it was a young girl
who came to the door. She squinted at him through the glass, twisted the locks and stuck her
head out toward him.
“We’re closed,” the girl said. She rolled her eyes in case her tone hadn’t made her
annoyance perfectly clear.
Huckley looked the girl over. Dark circles ringed her eyes as if old layers of eyeliner
had melted into her skin. Her cheekbones stuck out like there wasn’t enough skin on her
face to go around, giving her an emaciated, hungry look, like a stray dog who thinks a
wrapper with grease on it is a meal. Black roots a few inches long told the world her bleach-
blonde hair was more bleach than blonde. The girl was a mess. Huckley couldn’t believe his
luck.
“Well, hello sweetie. When’d you start working here?”
The girl ignored the question. “Mr. Cooper left me to close today. Told me not to let anyone in.”
“That’s what Mr. Cooper said, huh? Well, I’m sure he didn’t mean me.”
The girl looked up and down the street. Huckley already knew there wasn’t anyone
there. He had checked when he first saw that it was a young girl coming toward the door.
“Look, I’m new to this town, mister. I don’t know who you are. So I think you’d
better go now. Come back tomorrow.”
“C’mon now, it wouldn’t hurt to talk to me a little.” Huckley smiled as he
concentrated. The girl’s mind was an open book. He pushed a little and the pages tumbled
open, images dancing free form, garbled and non-linear. Hers was the kind of mind
that used to confuse him, but that was a long time ago. Now it was easy. With a little
concentration he could find out everything he needed to know. Like how the girl was a
druggie, a loner, picking up a few bucks before moving on. How she was frustrated the
owner hadn’t trusted her with the cash register yet. How the first time he did, she’d take the money and be gone. And there, amid all the adolescent self-consciousness and emotionalism,
was a burst of sexual images. Many partners. Some for money. Some for drugs. And blazing
out in front was an evolving fantasy with Huckley himself.
Ahh, young hormones, he thought. Little teenage girls could never resist his looks:
white skin unmarked by any blemish, blonde hair combed back flat against his scalp, lips
dark red as if he had spent the day sipping wine, eyes squinted half shut as if he held a secret too valuable to share. Although he appeared to be in his thirties, it was always the young
ones who found him most attractive. And they were always so eager to prove they were
women by following him to whatever bed, car seat or back alley he chose.
He left the girl’s sexual images behind and shifted through her thoughts until he
found the right information.
“Your name’s Doreen, right?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
He smiled at the girl. “I just guessed. You look like a Doreen.”
“Is that a good thing?” she asked tugging on a few strands of her blonde hair and twirling it over her ear.
“Sure, pretty name for a pretty girl.” God, it was so easy. Huckley moved a step
closer to the girl and inhaled through flared nostrils. Cheap high school perfume mixed with
cheap high school marijuana. He smiled. That’s my girl.
“So Mr. Cooper left you all alone, huh? Surprised your father let you work a job like
this. What are you, seventeen?”
“I’m eighteen,” she lied. “Don’t know who my daddy is. Even if I did, I wouldn’t let him tell me what to do.”
“I see. But you let this Mr. Cooper tell you, huh?” Doreen shrugged. Huckley held
up the roll of tape, “Listen, I really need some duct tape. This stuff doesn’t work for what
I’m using it for.”
“I’d like to help, mister. I really would. But the register’s closed and emptied out for
the day so....” Doreen started to smack the chewing gum she’d been hiding in her mouth.
“No problem. I’ll just leave some money and you can put it in the register tomorrow.
I’ll be in and out of here. Let you get back to your own business, if you know what I mean.”
Huckley raised a hand to his lips and took a drag off an imaginary joint. Doreen broke eye
contact and stared at the floor. Huckley smirked. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with it. Lord
knows I’ve smoked my share of weed.”
Doreen smiled self-consciously, “You smoke?”
“Are you kidding? My generation invented the stuff.” He leaned in and whispered in
her ear, “In fact, I wouldn’t mind a hit if you have any left. I’ll pay you a little extra for it.”She hesitated, looked up and down the street again. “I don’t think that’d be a good idea.”
“All right. I understand. Maybe you’re too young for me to be talking like that anyway. I’m sorry.” Huckley turned to leave.“I’m not too young. I told you I was eighteen.”
“Yeah, that’s what you told me.”
Doreen bit her lower lip, then moved to the side to let him in. “I don’t believe I’m doing this.” “That’s a good girl. You know, I was really lucky you were here.” Huckley smiled.
“You have no idea how much time you’ve saved me.”
He leaned into her as he passed. An electric jolt moved through him as his arm
rubbed against her breasts. Huckley curled his hands into fists and rubbed them up and
down his thighs. He knew he had to wait until she closed the door behind them, but this was
his favorite part and he could hardly contain himself. He smiled at his good fortune. He was
back on schedule.

Xpresso Book Tours Blog Tour, Interview, & Giveaway: Let Me Go (L.L. Akers)

Let Me Go by L.L. Akers
(Let Me Go #1)
Publication date: July 5th 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

A scarlet dragonfly tattoo—meant to be a beautiful, family mark of freedom, but instead becomes a prophetic brand for those who wear it, to forever be suffering. Wounded and broken, they find themselves flittering back into the cycle of abuse that relentlessly clings to their family, a reality they can never seem to escape.
One mother and her daughters, bound by blood—torn apart by abuse. They begin their lives intertwined but are forced to fight for their survivals separately, struggling to hide their fear and undeserved shame from each other and the world. One of these women finds herself trapped—alone—and she battles to survive the terrifying darkness. With long hours of nothing to do but wait in fear, she grapples through her obscure dreams and memories of the past, sorting which memory belongs to whom: physically harmed, mentally damaged, raped, sexually abused, an unwanted pregnancy… and even the vivid memory of a dangerous dance with death in a last attempt to escape the shambles and horrors of a seemingly unchangeable situation.
Twin sisters, Gabriella and Olivia, dive blindly—and much too early—into adulthood. They are soon followed by their younger sister, Emma, all running from a not-so-idyllic past; chasing the happiness they believe they will find, by abandoning their childhoods to be “grown-up” and start their own lives.
Deeply evocative, Let Me Go is a coming-of-age story: the struggles of one mother and her daughters trying to survive life—marred by abuse and misplaced blame—and their need to reach peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

L.L. Akers is originally from the Midwest where she grew up climbing trees, haystacks, and haylofts—escaping into other worlds with a good book. She enjoyed playing cow-pattie hopscotch and outrun-the-bull with her siblings.
She now lives in the South, the silly wife of a serious man, and mother of: one very gifted and fetching male-tween, a chubby beagle that looks astonishingly like a mini-cow, a deranged terrier as well as five Koi fish, a herd of tiny but boastful lizards, and dozens of obnoxiously loud serenading frogs.
After a career in human resources, she now pursues life as a recluse writer; hanging out at home in her PJ’s with her iPad, Burt’s Bees lip balm and her posse of creatures. Regardless of her self-isolation, she can still be lured outside for brief moments by the scent of freshly mowed grass and a bowl full of cherries.
Let Me Go is her first novel, and book 1 of the Let Me Go Series – each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhangers.

1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I’m no stranger to abuse, thus, I lurk at several FB support sites andread many motivating posts from survivors; they inspired me.

2. Who is your favorite character in the book?
Jake! He’s a hot, southern boy who likes to get dirty (no really… he’s a mechanic), and oh so sweet!

3. Which came first, the title or the novel?
The Title. The words ‘let me go’ are common words in the vocabulary of a victim, even if they’re afraid to say them aloud.

4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
The scene in which Gabby, an unwed teenager, says goodbye to the baby boy she is giving up for adoption; she writes him a very short fairy tale and takes only one opportunity to hold him close to her heart. I cried buckets writing it. That scene is based on my own life, and I’ve been reaching out for that baby boy since he turned 18. Finally in October 2013 I turned to Facebook. I had my arms around my baby boy six short weeks later in November; he’s now 26, and I’ll never let him go again.

5. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
Not to mix genres! It’s hard to put Let Me go in one genre; it’s packed full of suspense, but it’s also a comingofage story that definitely falls into the New Adult genre as well.

6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?
My cover artist created the perfect cover for this book. If you read it, you’ll understand why the models are looking broodingly toward the dragonflies.

7. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2014?
The next Let Me Go novel, Captured Again!

8. What was your favorite book in 2013?
Envy, by Sandra Brown; I was envious of the brilliance of her plot.

9. What’s up next for you?
Pedaling as fast as I can to continue telling Emma, Gabby and Olivia’s stories. They’re aging faster than I can write!

10. Is there anything that you would like to add?
If you read this far in the interview… thank you!

Allie Everhart writes about dating, love, and romance. She’s also a freelance writer for magazines and websites. Before freelancing, she was a book editor for a publishing company where she worked on several NYT bestselling nonfiction books. She loves to read as much as she loves to write. And when she’s not reading or writing, she’s outside running, which is when she gets her best book ideas.

Garret swims over and stands up right behind me, placing his hands on the edge of the pool around my head. He’s so close I can feel his warm breath on my neck and it sends a shiver down me.

“When are you gonna admit I’m a better swimmer than you?”

“Never.” I flip around and let go of the pool, quickly grabbing his shoulders so I don’t sink since I’m too short to touch the bottom. But now my legs are dangling awkwardly and I’m having a hard time holding myself up. Garret notices and casually puts his arms around me, pulling our bodies together.

My heart is beating wildly but I try to keep my breath steady to hide it. “When are you gonna admit I’m a better runner than you?”

“I’ve already admitted that. I’ve told you that several times. I’ll say it again. You’re a better runner than me. Now do you have anything to say to me?”

“Hmm.” I pretend to think. “Nope. Nothing.”

He smiles. “You just can’t give me a compliment, can you?”

“I give you compliments all the time!” I wrap my legs around his waist. He doesn’t even react.

“Like what? Because if you gave me one, I totally missed it.”

“I don’t know, but I’m sure I’ve given you one.”

“I’m sure you haven’t.” He keeps his eyes on mine, barely blinking.

“I told you how much I liked those lights you gave me for my birthday. That was kind of a compliment.”

“Not really.” He slides his hands down under my thighs, supporting my weight. It allows me to loosen my grip on his shoulders but it also makes me completely breathless. “Jade, is there anything I do that you like? Anything you think I’m good at?”

I know what he’s implying and yes, there are many things he does that I like. And he’s definitely good at them. Like the way he’s holding me right now? Definitely good.

Before I can speak, he slowly licks the water from my lips until they part, then slips his tongue in my mouth. I wrap my hands behind his neck as his tongue explores my mouth in a way that gets my body so scorching hot that even the water can’t cool me down.

After a few incredible, mind-blowing minutes, he slowly pulls away.

“Do you like it when I do that?” There’s that cocky smile I know and love.

I smile back. “I’ll admit you’re pretty good at that.”

“Finally! A compliment.” He lets me go, forcing me to grab the edge of the pool. He sets himself up in the lane next to me like he’s preparing to swim laps.

“Hey, where are you going?”

“I have to practice.”

“So we’re just done here?”

“We haven’t even been on a date. I was only kissing you because I was trying to find something you thought I was good at. And I did. So we’re done.”

He takes off swimming, leaving me wanting more. Much, much more.

The water was cool. I’d kicked off my sandals long before we made it to the river’s edge and now stood with my toes planted firmly in place as the river’s constant movement slipped over my skin. The moon was low in the sky, nearly full and shedding just the right amount of light down on us. I took a step back, onto a smooth rocky ledge behind me, as the chill of the water soon became too much. The rock beneath my bare feet was still warm from the sun and I let out a little sigh into the night. I tipped my head back to look up at the star-filled sky, taking in all of nature’s uncorrupted beauty that surrounded me.

Jason came up behind me, his sandals shuffling against the smooth surface of the rock. “It’s nice, isn’t it?” he asked, his voice nothing but a whisper.

Glancing over my shoulder at him, I was surprised by how close he was to me. Inhaling, I could smell his guy-scent—a mixture of soap and deodorant of some sort. Whatever it was, it was spicy and male and I liked it. My eyes traveled the length of him and I knew he could feel them on him, but I was too tipsy to care, so I continued checking him out unabashedly while his gaze locked on the sky.

“Look,” he said as he pointed. “Bats.”

My head snapped to where he’d pointed so quickly, the movement jerked my body with it and I stumbled. Losing my footing, I nearly toppled into the river. Jason reached out and steadied me, his large hands gripping my forearms.

“Whoa there,” he chuckled.

His face was inches from mine. His warm hands still gripped my arms. I straightened my stance to a firmer one, but he still didn’t let go. Our stare became fused together as electricity zapped beneath my skin from the contact I’d been craving all night.

“Thanks for catching me.” A giggle built in my chest, but the second I saw his tongue slip out and lick at his bottom lip, it disappeared.

“No problem.”

His hands slid free from my arms only to grip my hips firmly. My heart pounded from their sudden shift in placement. Jason’s jaw moved as he bit at the inside of his cheek. I wondered for a moment if this was a nervous habit of his or if he was simply wondering whether now was the time to take me home.

I didn’t want him to take me home. I wasn’t finished with this night—with him—just yet.

With the courage that came from drinking three Long Island Iced Teas and the yearning that pulsated through my body from his nearness, I did what I wanted—I arched my body into his and kissed him. His lips were warm and soft; his breath tasted of spicy liquor, and I knew I was right where I’d wanted to be a million times in my head—locked in Jason Bryant’s arms with my lips pressed to his.
