Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

Hardcover, 387 pages
Publication Date: August 2nd 2016

Publisher:  Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Lana used to know what was real.
That was before when her life was small and quiet. Her golden step-brother, Ben, was alive, she could only dream about bonfiring with the populars, their wooded island home was idyllic, she could tell the truth from lies, and Ben’s childhood stories were firmly in her imagination.
Then came after.
After has Lana boldly kissing her crush, jumping into the water from too high up, and living with nerve and mischief. But after also has horrors, deaths that only make sense in fairy tales, and terrors from a past Lana thought long forgotten: Love, blood, and murder.

My love of ensemble casts runs deep. As a kid I watched and re-watched The Goonies and the Princess Bride, their dynamic, indomitable, plucky, and adventurous characters irresistible to me. My favorite book was LITTLE WOMEN, the interplay between the sisters taut and emotional.

Stakes are high in a thriller and there are no higher stakes than fighting to keep the ones you love alive. When I set out to write THE TELLING I wanted to give protagonist Lana friends and family she’d walk into battle for and the book well-developed secondary characters who are indispensable to the plot and enrich the mystery.

I think there’s no better way to introduce THE TELLING and prepare for its August 2nd release then by introducing you to Lana, Ben, Carolynn, Willa, Becca, Josh, Duncan, and Rusty. These eight soon-to-be high school seniors live on Gant Island, a seemingly idyllic place in Washington State’s Puget Sound. It’s summertime and there’s something dark and twisted afoot.
In today’s post you’ll meet four characters; the other four will be introduced tomorrow (7/28) at Chapter by Chapter (http://www.chapter-by-chapter.com/).
Lana

“There’s space between what you see and what I feel. In my experience there’s usually a line that separates what people choose to show the world and what they keep hidden. My small life of before was like that. I was an earthworm dreaming of being a python.” THE TELLING
Rundown: THE TELLING’s protagonist. 17-year-old Lana witnessed her step-brother Ben’s death two month ago. Ever since, she’s been trying to live like Ben did, with nerve and mischief. She’s mustered the courage to hang out with the popular crowd, the kids her peers have called the core since forever, and she’s planning on asking out her longtime crush. She’s determined to find out who – or what – took Ben from her.

Personal Motto: I am a story.
Signature Summer Adventure: Cutting across the harbor in a dinghy, sailing on the Mira, playing scrabble on the terrace – anything, as long as it was with Ben.
Favorite Spot on Gant Island: Swisher Spring on the top of the ridge, toes curling over the edge, getting ready to jump. OR, On the terrace roasting marshmallows at midnight.
Carolynn

“Carolynn Winters is sunning herself below, keeping one bright fish eye on me. She’s dazzling, confident, the kind of girl who never asks twice.” THE TELLING
Rundown: Carolynn’s mom and Lana’s mom were best friends growing up on Gant Island. The memory of their moms’ shared little idioms is all they’ve had in common since Lana’s mom died thirteen years ago. But Lana’s been hanging out with Carolynn’s group this summer and Carolynn’s queen bee act is cracking. They have a lot more in common than either wants to admit. Carolynn is whip-smart, sophisticated, and, when it counts most, the girl you want to have your back.
Personal Motto: Grin, grin, grin until you feel the smile taking root in your belly.
Signature Summer Adventure: Marmalade’s Cafe drinking an iced mocha, whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and chocolate shavings – the sweeter the better.
Favorite Gant Island Spot: The lighthouse on the southern point of the island where she likes to spook her dates with ghost stories.
Duncan

“The boys used to push us off the swings. It was a game – knock the girls on their butts. Not Duncan. If he came up behind you, it was to push you higher. He wanted you to fly.” THE TELLING

Rundown: At first glance, Duncan is all aviators, hair gel, boat shoes, and a cocky attitude. As long as he’s getting girls, he’s happy. But Duncan also takes his two younger brothers for bike rides every Sunday and Carolynn believes there’s more to him. She remembers what he was like when he was little. She blames his dad’s expectations for Duncan’s attitude. And she’s guarding a big secret about Duncan.
Personal Motto: Never without my stunners on.
Signature Summer Adventure: What he’d want you to think: Anything with girls in swimsuits. But really: Mountain biking with his little bros.
Favorite Gant Island Spot: The mountain bike trails that crisscross Gant Island’s forests.
Josh

“I get a whiff of Josh’s freshly laundered shirt. Josh is the kind of boy who eats kale salad at dinner with his moms and has a clean room and laundry folded in his dresser drawers and doesn’t know what it’s like to get picked last. What happens to boys like Josh in jail?” THE TELLING
Rundown: Josh isn’t just a nice guy, he’s the nicest. Lana’s had it bad for Josh since she laid eyes on him in his red corduroy pants the first day of pre-school. This summer has been twelve years in coming; Lana’s dream comes true when Josh strolls up to her at the coffee shop to invite her to a bonfire. He’s been right there helping her grieve her dead step-brother, and he’s right there, close to the danger, when she sets out to solve the mysteries piling up on Gant.

Personal Motto: Nice guys always finish first.
Signature Summer Adventure: Throwing cookouts on the beach for all of his friends.
Favorite Spot on Gant Island: His house – sitting on the kitchen counter eating a freshly baked batch of cookies or throwing a house party while his moms are in Seattle for the weekend.

Metaltown, where factories rule, food is scarce, and hope is in short supply.
The rules of Metaltown are simple: Work hard, keep your head down, and watch your back. You look out for number one, and no one knows that better than Ty. She’s been surviving on the factory line as long as she can remember. But now Ty has Colin. She’s no longer alone; it’s the two of them against the world. That’s something even a town this brutal can’t take away from her. Until it does.
Lena’s future depends on her family’s factory, a beast that demands a ruthless master, and Lena is prepared to be as ruthless as it takes if it means finally proving herself to her father. But when a chance encounter with Colin, a dreamer despite his circumstances, exposes Lena to the consequences of her actions, she’ll risk everything to do what’s right.
In Lena, Ty sees an heiress with a chip on her shoulder. Colin sees something more. In a world of disease and war, tragedy and betrayal, allies and enemies, all three of them must learn that challenging what they thought was true can change all the rules.
An enthralling story of friendship and rebellion, Metaltown will have you believing in the power of hope.

ARC Review: The Call (Peadar O' Guilin)

30292416
Books: The Call
Author: Peadar O' Guilin
Hardcover, 320 pages
Publication Date:
August 30th 2016

Publisher: David Fickling Books

The Hunger Games meets horror in this unforgettable thriller where only one thing is certain . . . you will be Called.
Thousands of years ago, humans banished the Sidhe fairy race to another dimension. The beautiful, terrible Sidhe have stewed in a land of horrors ever since, plotting their revenge . . . and now their day has come.
Fourteen-year-old Nessa lives in a world where every teen will be "Called." It could come in the middle of the day, it could come deep in the night. But one instant she will be here, and the next she will wake up naked and alone in the Sidhe land. She will be spotted, hunted down, and brutally murdered. And she will be sent back in pieces by the Sidhe to the human world . . . unless she joins the rare few who survive for twenty-four hours and escape unscathed.
Nessa trains with her friends at an academy designed to maximize her chances at survival. But as the days tick by and her classmates go one by one, the threat of her Call lurks ever closer . . . and with it the threat of an even more insidious danger closer to home.

Irish writer Peadar Ó Guilín is the author of the YA novel, The Call, inspired by the beautiful northwest of Ireland where he grew up.
In September 2007, Peadar published his first novel, The Inferior, which the Times Educational Supplement called "a stark, dark tale, written with great energy and confidence and some arresting reflections on human nature." Foreign editors liked it too, and over the coming year it is to be translated into eight languages, including Japanese and Korean.
His fantasy and SF short stories have appeared in numerous venues, including Black Gate magazine and an anthology celebrating the best of the iconic Weird Tales. He is currently working on a sequel to The Call.

"3 Minutes
You wake up alone in a horrible land.
A horn sounds. The Call has begun.

2 Minutes
The Sidhe are close. They're the most beautiful and terrible people you've ever seen.
And they've seen you.

1 Minute
Nessa will be called soon.
No one thinks she has any chance to survive.
But's she's going to prove them wrong.

TIME'S UP

Could you survive the call?"

I came across The Call while looking through Goodreads and it immediately grabbed my attention. Everything about The Call made me want to read it! The Call is described as Hunger Games with horror added in and I could not agree more. I am a huge fan of survival stories and with the idea of horror mixed in...YEP...HAD ME!

I really enjoyed The Call and the characters within the story. The Call is a survival story that is based around young adults who are sent to an elite school where they are trained to fight for their lives against the "Sidhe" The Sidhe are  creatures who have been banished to another world and have signed a treaty with humans to prevent a war by requesting each teen to be "called" over to the Sidhe land and fight for their lives. The teen has about a day in the Sidhe land to fight and survive and if they live though the day then they are sent back to the human world and can live the rest of their lives free from being called. The time is different in the Sidhe land and a entire day equals 3 minutes in the human world and the human is returned to the exact same spot in which they left when they were called....which can cause issues if anything has changed while they are gone.

The Sidhe land is really horrifying and the Sidhe people are even worse. The Call is truly a horror story and is not for the faint of heart. The Sidhe people are brutal and if the teen that is "called" actually survives...then they are usually sent back horribly disfigured or worse...in order to send a message to the human world.

"They've been warned about this from their first night in survival college, when they wake up naked and alone in the middle of the woods......Even in your dreams, act as if your life depends on it, because someday it will."

The main character, Nessa, is a young girl who has polio and can barely use her legs. She is seen by everyone as weak and fragile and Nessa is ANYTHING BUT FRAGILE! Nessa is such a strong character and has such an amazing outlook on her life...Nothing stops her and she trains just as hard if not harder than everyone else. I really would have loved to explore the characters more and learn more about each one. The relationships between some of the characters was very strained and there was continuous turmoil between the teens. I also felt like there was more going on with the adults/teachers that are introduced in the story and the reader doesn't really get to explore this aspect of the story.

I really enjoyed most everything about The Call and it kept my attention for the most part but the one drawback of the entire book was how short the book was. This story is so fascinating and the author really could have created an amazing, deep story with this book and I feel as though the story was too crammed and the reader really needed more information about everything. I wanted to read more about the Sidhe land and the background of why and how this all happened...I wanted to know more about these amazing characters and their will to survive. The Call is an survival story that is just as fascinating as it is horrifying...I recommend any ya horror fans to check this book out immediately!

Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: March 28, 2017

It’s survival of the strongest in a contemporary, girl-versus-wild middle-grade debut from Fire & Flood author Victoria Scott!

Sloan is a hunter.

So she shouldn’t be afraid of anything. But ever since her mom left the family and she lost hearing in one ear in a blizzard, it’s been hard to talk to people, and near-impossible to go anywhere or do anything without her dad or big sister within eyesight — it makes her too scared to be on her own.

When they leave her home alone for what should only be two nights, she’s already panicked. Then the snow starts falling and doesn’t stop. One of her neighbors is hurt in an accident. And the few people still left in Rusic need to make it to the river and the boat that’s tied there — their only way to get to a doctor from their isolated Alaska town.

But the woods are icy cold, and the wolves are hungry. Sloan and her group are running out of food, out of energy, and out of time. That’s when the wolves start hunting them . . .

Put Me In The Story Personalized Books Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway: Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses (James & Kimberly Dean)

Book: Pete the Cat & His Magic Sunglasses
Author: Kimberly & James Deam
Hardcover, 40 pages
Publish Date: October 1st 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
$29.99 Hardcover Personalized Book

Pete the Cat is back in New York Times bestselling artist James Dean's picture book Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses, written by Kimberly Dean. Pete the Cat wakes up feeling grumpy—nothing seems to be going his way. But with the help of some magic sunglasses, Pete learns that a good mood has been inside him all along. Fans of Pete the Cat will love watching him take his positive outlook and transform a grumpy day into an awesome day!

James Dean’s art has sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for ten years and has turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first adult book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his art work, in 2006. He illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat I Love my White Shoes, written by Eric Litwin, in 2008, and the follow-up book, Pete the Cat: Rocking In My School Shoes, in 2011. James lives in Savannah, Georgia with his wife, Kimberly.

In 2004, Kimberly & James Dean sat down at their kitchen table to work on a children’s book together. Their dream has finally become a reality with the release of this new Pete the Cat book, Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses. Both left corporate jobs in the late nineties (James was an electrical engineer, Kimberly worked in the press office of the governor of Georgia) to pursue their passion for art, and they have experienced a life made up of strange and wonderful coincidences ever since. Pete the Cat has brought magic into their lives. They work in side-by-side studios, sharing their home with five cats and Emma the pug.

Pete The Cat is a fun and engaging children's book that every child will  love and what makes this book extra special is how parents can personalize the book which really grabs the kids attention and makes them feel extra special and really a part of the book.

I love how Pete's friend Toad realizes that Pete is sad and he wants to cheer him up so he gives him a pair of magic sunglasses which immediately makes Pete happier and then throughout the day Pete realizes that he doesn't need magic sunglasses to make him happy...he has friends that make him happy.

Pete The Cat shows children how to be happy and look for the good in everything and it also teaches positivity  in life and how good friends make for a happy life. I highly recommend this really cute book to anyone with a young child who loves engaging, fun personalized books.

FFBC Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway: The Killer In Me (Margot Harrison)

The Killer in Me
by Margot Harrison
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Release Date: July 12th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller, Horror, Contemporary, Fiction

Hasn't he lived long enough? Why not? I could take him like a thief in the night.
This is how the Thief thinks. He serves death, the vacuum, the unknown. He’s always waiting. Always there.
Seventeen-year-old Nina Barrows knows all about the Thief. She’s intimately familiar with his hunting methods: how he stalks and kills at random, how he disposes of his victims’ bodies in an abandoned mine in the deepest, most desolate part of a desert.
Now, for the first time, Nina has the chance to do something about the serial killer that no one else knows exists. With the help of her former best friend, Warren, she tracks the Thief two thousand miles, to his home turf—the deserts of New Mexico.
But the man she meets there seems nothing like the brutal sociopath with whom she’s had a disturbing connection her whole life. To anyone else, Dylan Shadwell is exactly what he appears to be: a young veteran committed to his girlfriend and her young daughter. As Nina spends more time with him, she begins to doubt the truth she once held as certain: Dylan Shadwell is the Thief. She even starts to wonder . . . what if there is no Thief?

Positive Points:
  • The Killer In Me is an engaging, colorful, and attractive cover with an intriguing female main character carrying a shovel into what looks like a desert which immediately grab the attention of suspense/thriller readers.

  • The female heroine is determined to stop an literally unstoppable serial killer and follows his every move in order to learn what his next steps are.

  • The Killer In Me is a psychological thriller with crazy twists and turns

  • Creepy and intense situations throughout the book that will keep the reader guessing until the very last page

Weak Points:

  • The Killer In Me is a good mystery but the story became confusing in certain parts of the book.

  • The character development was weak and doesn't really help the reader connect with the main characters

  • The story was hard to follow at some times and I found myself flipping back to see what I had missed within the story.

Overall I would recommend this book for thriller and psychological readers who enjoy a good mystery and the positive points outweigh the negatives.

I was raised in the wilds of New York by lovely, nonviolent parents who somehow never managed to prevent me from staying up late to read scary books. I now work at an alt-weekly newspaper in Vermont, where my favorite part of the job is, of course, reviewing scary books and movies. The Killer in Me is my first novel.
