Review: Dead Ever After (Charlaine Harris)

Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13)Hardcover, 1st edition, 338 pages
Published May 7th 2013 by Ace

There are secrets in the town of Bon Temps, ones that threaten those closest to Sookie—and could destroy her heart...
Sookie Stackhouse finds it easy to turn down the request of former barmaid Arlene when she wants her job back at Merlotte’s. After all, Arlene tried to have Sookie killed. But her relationship with Eric Northman is not so clearcut. He and his vampires are keeping their distance…and a cold silence. And when Sookie learns the reason why, she is devastated. Then a shocking murder rocks Bon Temps, and Sookie is arrested for the crime. But the evidence against Sookie is weak, and she makes bail. Investigating the killing, she’ll learn that what passes for truth in Bon Temps is only a convenient lie. What passes for justice is more spilled blood. And what passes for love is never enough...

Charlaine Harris
Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Now she lives in southern Arkansas with her husband, her three children, three dogs, and a duck. The duck stays outside.
Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was writing poetry and plays. After holding down some low-level jobs, she had the opportunity to stay home and write, and the resulting two stand-alones were published by Houghton Mifflin. After a child-producing sabbatical, Charlaine latched on to the trend of writing mystery series, and soon had her own traditional books about a Georgia librarian, Aurora Teagarden. Her first Teagarden, Real Murders, garnered an Agatha nomination.
Soon Charlaine was looking for another challenge, and the result was the much darker Lily Bard series. The books, set in Shakespeare, Arkansas, feature a heroine who has survived a terrible attack and is learning to live with its consequences.

When Charlaine began to realize that neither of those series was ever going to set the literary world on fire, she regrouped and decided to write the book she’d always wanted to write. Not a traditional mystery, nor yet pure science fiction or romance, Dead Until Dark broke genre boundaries to appeal to a wide audience of people who just enjoy a good adventure. Each subsequent book about Sookie Stackhouse, telepathic Louisiana barmaid and friend to vampires, werewolves, and various other odd creatures, has drawn more readers. The Southern Vampire books are published in Japan, Great Britain, Greece, Germany, Thailand, Spain, France, and Russia.
In addition to Sookie, Charlaine has another heroine with a strange ability. Harper Connelly, lightning-struck and strange, can find corpses… and that’s how she makes her living.
In addition to her work as a writer, Charlaine is the past senior warden of St. James Episcopal Church, a board member of Mystery Writers of America, a past board member of Sisters in Crime, a member of the American Crime Writers League, and past president of the Arkansas Mystery Writers Alliance. She spends her "spare" time reading, watching her daughter play sports, traveling, and going to the movies.

OK I LOVE ALL THINGS SOOKIE!!!!!!!!! Yes I know that some people were not happy about the ending of this epic series but I did. I love Charlaine Harris's writing. Her stories are witty, charming, and full of suspense and I love every minute of it.

Sookie is one of my all time favorite characters. I love the fact that she expresses everything she feels and holds NOTHING back!! She is always into something and there is always someone after her.....

You never know what you are going to get when you begin a Sookie Stackhouse novel but you know this....IT WILL BE GOOD!!! Every new character that pops out is just as fascinating as the one before.

Sookie is my favorite character but there is a close running for second between her best friend/boss Sam and her ex-vampire boyfriend Bill. There is just something about Bill that I have always loved. He always fights for Sookie no matter what. Even after their relationship ended he always swore he would watch out for her and he does...

Another character that I enjoy immensly is the bitch of all bitches, Pam. Pam is Eric's (Sookie's "current vampire love") child. Pam is just fascinating. She is mean and vindictive but yet you know she will always have your back.

When thinking of how I would write my review I ended up with the decision to not give away any spoilers. The shocks and secrets are what make this book good. I will say that yes the ending is not what alot will expect especially with how this series has been going and being shown on tv (True Blood.) But die-hard Sookie fans (such as myself) will love the book no matter what. I am truly sad that this is the last book in the series. I will miss Charlaine's writing and her story-telling....

Book Blast & Giveaway: Earth Angel (E Van Lowe)

Just because Megan Barnett recently defeated Satan, has a fantastic new best friend, and has won the love of deliciously handsome, Guy Matson, doesn’t mean her troubles are over. Far from it. For Megan doesn’t realize it, but in her possession is a powerful weapon, a weapon sought after by both angels and demons and everything in between. They will do ANYTHING to get it.
In E. Van Lowe’s humorous, romantic and thrilling sequel to Boyfriend From Hell, Megan winds up in a gripping life or death battle to save herself, the boy she loves, and all of mankind from unthinkable evil.

E Van Lowe was born in the Bronx a long time ago, back in the days when children were supposed to be seen and not heard. Fortunately for E, his parents allowed him to speak freely. Unfortunately for his parents and older brother, E had a lot to say. He was speaking quite freely until one day, while his mother was trying to watch her “stories” (which is code for soap operas), she suggested that instead of speaking freely, he write all his important thoughts down. E wrote down many important thoughts, such as: crayons melt when you leave them on the radiator, or toy soldiers melt when you drop them in the muffin batter before mom puts it in the oven. His brother thought he was weird, but E was only ten years old at the time. What did he expect, Shakespeare? E liked writing things down so much, he decided that when he grew up, he was going to become a professional writer.  E has gone on to write for many award winning TV shows including: The Cosby Show, and Even Stevens. He also co-wrote the Academy Award nominated short film, Cadillac Dreams. Never Slow Dance With A Zombie was his first teen novel. Boyfriend From Hell is the first in the Falling Angels Saga. The second novel in the saga, Earth Angel, will be coming out soon. It seems E still has lots of important, and weird, thoughts to share with readers.

In Darkness We Must Abide
By
Rhiannon Frater

With his presence still sizzling on her skin and his hazel eyes still haunting her thoughts, Vanora pondered the words that Armando had spoken in his silky Spanish accent.
You must go home, he had said.
Hugging herself, she gazed into the darkness surrounding her, wondering if Armando still lingered in the shadows observing her. That he had sought her out both thrilled and terrified her. When she had first seen him standing on the lighted path of her apartment complex, the mere sight of his enigmatic smile had set her heart aflutter. But now that he had slipped back into the darkness, her heart beat with fear.
Could she go back to Houston and face all she had run from? Could she forget the evils she had beheld on her eighteenth birthday? Could she just abandon the life she had meticulously created for herself over the last two years and return to the mansion that was haunted by death and pain?
You must go home.
Armando’s words echoed in her mind.
Vanora lifted a hand to brush away her white-blond hair and turned to face the dark waters of the swimming pool that glimmered in the moonlight.
To go home meant she would at last cast aside her trepidation and face the monsters of her nightmares. Was she strong enough to do so? Was she strong enough to go home and save the ones she loved?
With a surrendering sigh, she admitted to herself that it was time to return to her childhood home. It was difficult to concede, but her reluctance to return was partially because she feared allowing Armando into her life once more. Though the creatures that dwelled in the darkness were terrifying, it was Armando who surely frightened her.
Only he could truly steal away her heart and soul…

Editorial Reviews Salisbury is a rising star in genre fiction. This book makes a unique and exciting contribution in the fantasy realm. The first of great things to come. --Jake Black, "The Authorized Ender Companion" "Smallville" "Ender's Game: Recruiting Valentine" Amazon Reviews Conclusion: A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience. There are moments in this tale that are especially well done... story telling at a level that I'd be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work. As a dedicated YA work... 5 Stars. ~ Ray Nicholson The beginning of a great adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I'll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do. Give it a read! ~ HRL Enthralling story line that really pulls you in …The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character. ~ Janason

“Entula tuulo’ i’ba, Beleger!” the Storm Elf shouted as he looked into the starless black cloak of the night sky.

He threw his head back, squinted until his beady eyes shut, and extended his arms with his hands open and up-turned. He stood motionless and waited for something, anything to happen; a strike of lightning, a gale-force wind, a violent shake of the ground beneath his feet that were shod in pointed shoes. But nothing came, and the forest was as quiet as the darkest tomb in the catacombs of Cordale. Not even the trees made a sound, and their boughs remained rigid and eerily silent. It was as if the very world held its breath, refusing to offer even the slightest submission to the elf’s magical request.

A few moments passed in awkward stillness while the elf remained frozen in his posture of anticipation. Finally, an acorn fell and struck the ground. There was no blaze of fire or magical waves of energy. Nothing.

The Storm Elf slowly opened one eye and peered down his narrow nose at an object resting before him. A large black, furry beast lay quiet and lifeless on a large altar chiseled from a dark gray stone. Like the trees, sky, wind, and everything else in the forest clearing, the beast made no movement.

“Ugh!” said the elf as he exhaled an exasperated sigh. His shoulders slumped to his side.

“Why isn’t this working? I know those are the right words!” he grumbled. His frustration grew as he knelt and rummaged through a small pack sitting near the foot of the stone altar.

“Come all this way for nothing? I think not!” He argued with himself. “Korwin Widestep does not give up so easily. They’ll see.”

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I would like to say that the inspiration behind my book was a deep and long tale, but it was simply me trying to answer my own question as to how the vampire came to be. Since I wasn't familiar with many vampire stories, I wasn't sure if one had spoke of vampire origins so that alone had begun to feed my curiosity. One Friday night I had been watching The Vampire Diaries with my husband and I loved that there was this believable explanation as to how a vampire bloodline began (mind you, I had never read the books before) and I guess that was the first hint of inspiration for me. So from there I set out to tell a story of how a vampire came to exist in my mind, but not only that, I wanted to tell a simple story of a girl growing up in isolation and how she dealt with it. Honestly, I would call my story less of a vampire novel and more of a life story featuring vampires. It wasn't so much about vampires and their ways but more about how Olivia interacted with others as a human and as a vampire.

I was also inspired by my one true love, Fullmetal Alchemist, to write a journey type story in which the main character grows with other people and becomes a better version of herself. I didn't want a story of selfishness where there is little growth and it begins and ends with “me”. Not giving too much away of Fullmetal Alchemist, it starts as a very linear journey with only one selfish goal and turns into something bigger than the two main characters and that was what I was trying to convey in Requiem for Blood.  I'm not sure if I was particularly successful in conveying that message, but that's what I had set out to write and with those two stories as my inspiration.

Thank you for letting me share a little bit of the inspiration behind Requiem for Blood. :)

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Between, #1)

Hardcover, 368 pages
Expected publication: August 15th 2013 by Dial

You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…
Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town…until River West comes along. River rents the guesthouse behind Violet’s crumbling  state, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more? Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery...who makes you want to kiss back. Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.
Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.

What book are you waiting for this Wednesday??
