My Seventh-Grade Life In Tights by Brooks Benjamin

Blog Tour April 4-8 & 11-15

MY SEVENTH-GRADE LIFE IN TIGHTS
Author: Brooks Benjamin
Release Date: April 12th, 2016
Publisher: Delacorte/Random House

LIVE IT.
All Dillon wants is to be a real dancer. And if he wins a summer scholarship at Dance-Splosion, he’s on his way. The problem? His dad wants him to play football. And Dillon’s freestyle crew, the Dizzee Freekz, says that dance studios are for sellouts. His friends want Dillon to kill it at the audition—so he can turn around and tell the studio just how wrong their rules and creativity-strangling ways are.
WORK IT.
At first, Dillon’s willing to go along with his crew’s plan, even convincing one of the snobbiest girls at school to work with him on his technique. But as Dillon’s dancing improves, he wonders: what if studios aren’t the enemy? And what if he actually has a shot at winning the scholarship?

BRING IT.
Dillon’s life is about to get crazy . . . on and off the dance floor.

BOOK TRAILER

BOOK LINKS

Brooks and his wife, Jackie, live in Tennessee with their 75 pound daughter, LeeLoo, a sweet and severely demented German Shepherd mix.

1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I was actually on a dance crew in middle school. We planned to dance for the entire school on the very last day, but when the time came to do it, we chickened out. I loved the idea of a story with a self-taught street dancer and knew that when I wrote it, I'd make him and his crew a lot braver than me and my crew were back in 7th grade.

2. Who is your favorite character in the book?

Oh dang, this is tough! I love all of them so much. However, I think my favorite might actually have to be Sarah, the girl Dillon ends up getting dance pointers from. A lot of students consider her the "snobby girl" but there's a lot of things we don't know about Sarah at the beginning of the story. She and Kassie have a history, she and DeMarcus have some secrets, and she seems way too willing to help Dillon. It was so much fun coming up with her character and finding ways to work against the mean girl stereotype.

3. Which came first, the title or the novel?

The title. I joined some of my critique partners for Camp NaNoWriMo in 2013. When I started my profile, it asked for my book title. I named it "Dance Book" just to have something to call it, but then the next day, the title instantly came to me. My Seventh-Grade Life in Tights. I'd never had that happen to me before. It was a beautiful moment.

4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Okay, I'll have to set this one up a little. M7GLiT has a couple of really adorable budding-romance subplots. One is m/f and another one is m/m. There's a scene at the end where one of the characters comes out to some friends. There are a few of people at school who hear about it and are 1) shocked and 2) complete jerks about it. What I'm probably the most proud of is how the character and the friends handle the situation. There's not some epic monologue where everyone stops what they're doing and listens to a seemingly prepared speech or anything. But the situation is handled. And in their way. I just love how much each of the friends bond with one another when it happens.

5. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

That while you may develop one character based on you or your experiences, every single character in the novel ends up having a strong connection to you somehow. Elements of your personality, experiences in your past, wishes for the future. You see pieces of yourself in every character. You hear moments of your life in everyone's dialogue. It can be scary sometimes. But it's also extremely cathartic.

6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the little dancers scattered around the title and the hidden words peppered throughout the design. It brings such a fun level of energy to it and I couldn't have asked for anything better!

7. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?

I think I've answered this question differently each time. But that's because I've read so many incredible debuts that it's seriously hard to pick just one. So, keeping with my own tradition of not picking the exact same one twice, I'm going to say THE GIRL WHO FELL by Shannon Parker. This book will hug your heart, then squeeze it, tear it in half, and finally sew it back up at the end.

8. What was your favorite book in 2015?

Again, so many to choose from. So I'm going to pick one I haven't mentioned yet that deserves all the mentioning and go with Lance Rubin's DENTON LITTLE'S DEATHDATE. I had no idea that a writer could inject so much humor into a concept so macabre. But Lance did it and I can't wait for the sequel!

9. What’s up next for you?

Since M7GLiT sold, I've written another MG and a YA. Right now I'm working on another MG (tentatively titled The Mossy Hollow Fortune Tellers Club) which I'm falling in love with a little more with each chapter I finish.

10. Is there anything that you would like to add?

I just want to give a huge shout out to my debut siblings in the Class of 2K16 and the Sweet Sixteens groups. They've made this journey so much fun and infinitely more bearable. <3

Nicole was born in the suburbs of upstate New York, and began writing poems about unicorns and rainbows at a very early age. She detoured into acting, earned a BFA from Emerson College, and moved to NYC where she performed in lots of off-off-off-Broadway Shakespeare. After a decade of schlepping groceries on the subway, she and her husband hightailed it to sunny Los Angeles, where they now reside, surrounded by fruit trees, with their young daughter and two oddball cats. She is also the author of THE TWIN WILLOWS TRILOGY, published by Medallion Press. The first book, WINTER FALLS, is available now.

Ten Songs that belong on a Twin Willows Soundtrack

I make a playlist for every book I write. I need music when I write; it really helps me sink into the world of the book and into the character’s mind. This is just a small selection of songs that are on my Twin Willows playlist. Most of the songs remind me of Alessia, or of Jonah and Alessia’s relationship, but I’ve noted a couple that are inspired by the other characters.

“Howl”

Florence & The Machine

“Wolf”

First Aid Kit

“She Lit A Fire”

Lord Huron

Note: This is Heath’s torch song about Nerina.

“This Tornado Loves You”

Neko Case

“Soaring High, Soaring Low”

Dian Booth

Note:
This song is about the Waterfall. There’s rushing water sounds in it so I would often listen to this when I wrote scenes set at the Waterfall.

“Cosmic Love”

Florence & The Machine

“Lanterns”

Birds of Tokyo

“Elastic Heart”

Sia

Note: This song is Bree’s anthem. There is a scene of hers in THE BLUE WOODS that was so emotional for me to write that I played this song on repeat while I wrote it.

“Animal”

Neon Trees

“Hunting My Dress”

Jesca Hoop

Me, My Shelf and I Blog Tour, Interview, & Giveaway: This Ordinary Life (Jennifer Walkup)

THIS ORDINARY LIFE
Author: Jennifer Walkup
Release Date: October 1st, 2015
Publisher: Luminis Books

Sometimes Hope is the Most Extraordinary Gift of All.
High-school radio host Jasmine Torres's life is full of family dysfunction, but if she can score the internship of her dreams with a New York City radio station, she knows she can turn things around.
That is, until her brother Danny’s latest seizure forces her to miss the interview, and she’s back to the endless loop of missing school for his doctor appointments, picking up the pieces of her mother’s booze-soaked life, and stressing about Danny’s future.
Then she meets Wes. He’s the perfect combination of smart, cute, and funny. He also happens to have epilepsy like her brother. Wes is living a normal life despite his medical issues, which gives Jasmine hope for Danny. But memories of her cheating ex-boyfriend keep her from going on a real date with Wes, no matter how many times he asks her.
Jasmine can’t control everything. Not who wins the internship, not her mother’s addiction, not her brother’s health--not even where her heart will lead her. She wishes she could just have an ordinary life, but maybe what she already has is pretty extraordinary after all.

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Jasmine came to me first – a strong main character who loves working at her school radio station and works hard for her ultimate dream - to be a real radio dj someday. But I knew she’d have struggles – a cheating ex boyfriend, an alcoholic mother, an absent father. Her brother’s epilepsy was central to her character. I wanted at least one character who is struggling with epilepsy. It’s a subject that’s important to me, and something I wanted to represent. When I wrote in Wes, the love interest, also with epilepsy,

I wanted to show how characters are people first, disability second, and way more than the sum of their disabilities. Wes is a really great guy, and they quickly become good friends, and maybe more… Plus,

Wes gives her support, attention, and love she hasn’t had before. But he also gives her the hope she needs to keep following her dreams and caring for her family.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

I can relate to most of the characters in the novel, in one way or another. Like Jasmine, I take care of someone with epilepsy and understand the unexpected struggles this sometimes bring. Like the Mom character, I know what it’s like to be overwhelmed. And like Ms. Hudson, I know what it’s like to believe in someone so much and be proud of someone else’s accomplishments as if they were my own, doing what I can to help them on their path. Wes also made me laugh consistently when I was writing him, and Danny I just want to give a big hug.

Which came first, the title or the novel?

It’s funny how difficult titles can be. With my first book, I went through what felt like millions of titles. But with THIS ORDINARY LIFE, the title came to me almost as soon as the book did. Jasmine, the main character has lots of challenges in her life. She often wishes things were easier and simpler, but through the course of her struggles and chasing her dreams, she realizes that sometimes “ordinary” is found where we least expect it. And sometimes ordinary is more than good enough.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
It’s hard, harder than most people expect when starting out. It’s really fun and really wonderful, but it’s a lot of work, and each project has its own challenges. If I’ve learned anything it’s that the hardest and best work happens in revisions and that just when you think you’re done, there’s more work to be do. A lot more.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I think it’s a perfect representation of THIS ORDINARY LIFE. Jasmine, the main character, is an aspiring radio DJ and that dream plays a big role in how she pushes herself despite the challenges in her life and family, so the headphones, record, and NYC skyline are just perfect for this book. When I saw the cover I think I literally squealed. I loved the colors, the design, every last detail, down to the little paper airplanes (those who read the book will get the airplane reference in regards to Wes, the love interest in the book.)

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?

The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas and The Pragmatist by Stephanie Kuehn

What was your favorite book in 2015?

Oh that’s a tough question. It probably changes on a daily basis. I recently finished SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA by Becky Albertalli and really loved it!

What’s up next for you?

I’m working on a few different projects – all YA contemporary. My favorite at the moment is a summer YA where an unlikely duo teams up and tries to lose their real-life fears and worries in one crazy-fun and insightful summer at the beach.
