Family Heir by Sara M. Drake

Kelley longed for a normal life – to go to college, to have normal friends, and to work a nice desk job. When an unknown predator starts a killing spree, she finds herself drug back into a world that includes vampires, werewolves, and her ex-husband. Kelley agrees to lead the small team to find the murderer – which consists of one uncommunicative ex-hubbie and an inexperienced federal agent. Only shots in the night prove that Kelley has become a target and her training as a Hunter does nothing to prepare her for being hunted.

Sara developed her book addiction as a young child. Her concerned parents attempted an intervention and cut off her supply. These desperate times called for desperate measures forcing her to write her own stories. Since a human being cannot live on books alone, she has worked as a stage hand, care giver, active duty Air Force, college instructor, mental health counselor, and civil servant on the theory that more pay equals more books. Outside of that, she spends time developing a reputation as a crazy cat lady and irritating introvert.

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I wanted to write something fun and something my best friend (and editor) would enjoy reading. I live in Utah, a region rich with Big Foot lore, and wanted to tap into those legends. It all came together in my head and I just had to write it up.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

Troy! He cracks me up and offers potential for so many great scenes. I created him first based. Two of my good friends had both been complaining about how little their husbands communicated. I thought what fun it would be to write a character with serious communication issues. Hence, Troy and his one and two word responses! He says so much through his actions and even his few words show an amazing person hiding deep inside.

Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel! I struggle with titles! The working title for Family Heir was simply “Big Foot” and it took me ages to settle on a better title. Okay, I hope it’s a better title. Please feel free to let me know “Big Foot” works better :-D

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

There are several great scenes and it’s hard to choose. I love the last scene between Brent and Troy when they finish their spirit quest. It’s a nice balance of serious and humor and shows both of them at their best.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

I learn new things about writing every day! The most important thing I’ve learned: You can order pizza online! A couple clicks and food gets delivered without having to stop writing to cook something! I love it! On a more intelligent sounding note, I’ve learned better techniques for the revision process. For me, the key to a great book comes from going through paragraph by paragraph. I ask myself “what am I really trying to say or show here” and revise to support that.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the cover! Paramita did an amazing job! When I first started working with her, all I could tell her was that I wanted a Big Foot, a mountain, and a person. I know, I’m not much help sometimes. Ask me what I want for lunch and I’ll tell you “food” and leave it at that. Anyhow, what I like best—Paramita took my sparse ideas and turned it into a work of art.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?

Wow! That’s a tough one! I’m looking forward to the next book that reaches out, grabs me, and sucks me in. I love those moments when I discover an amazing new series or author.

What was your favorite book in 2014?

So far this year, I think my favorite book has been Kim Harrison’s final book in Hollows series, The Witch with No Name. I thought she did a great job wrapping up the series. I love it when an author can tie up the loose ends in a way that leaves the reader satisfied. It’s so difficult to do that with a long running series.

What’s up next for you?

I’ve got a science fiction book featuring an autistic main character that I hope to have out in the spring. I’m nearly finished with a book that looks at what happens to Beauty and the Beast after the happily-ever-after. I mean, the Beast was a bit hotter than the human he turns back into (at least to me… maybe I need a therapist). I always wondered how Beauty reacted to such a major change.

Is there anything that you would like to add?

Thank-you for inviting me to your blog!
