What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

The inspiration for ARRGH! came from stories my father used to tell me when I was 8 and we would go sailing during the summer.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

I love Leo; he’s the best friend anyone could ever have; plus he fits in your pocket and can always make you see the positive in any situation. ☺

Which came first, the title or the novel?

In this case the book came years before the title. With both of my YA books, Hush & Whisper, the opposite was true. Titles can be a very tricky thing. They can make or break a book.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I really like the sailing scenes. I grew up sailing and getting them just right meant a lot to me. Making them historically correct was pretty tricky. I just hope everyone likes them as much as I do.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Patience. That’s the hardest thing I’ve had to learn.

That and always have a good editor. It is almost impossible to edit your own work. There are too many tricks our minds like to play on us.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love it all. I am very lucky that I got to work with the amazing illustrator M.S. Corley. He not only did the cover art, but all of the 8 interior illustrations. Watching the characters I’ve pictured in my mind take shape on the page has been one of the most surreal things I’ve ever been part of.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?

I have 2 books slotted for release in 2015, both very different, but equally exciting. A picture book, called Sock Monster, and the third book in my YA Lakeview Academy series, Scream. Picking a favorite would be impossible.

What was your favorite book in 2014?

Oh wow, I’m not sure I could answer that. I’ve read 111 books this year to date and I have about a dozen favorites. I just finished E. Lockhart’s, We Were Liars and that was pretty good. Others would include, Hooks Revenge by Heidi Schulz, The Shadow Society and The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski.

What’s up next for you?

I’ve plotted book 4 in the Lakeview series and I am playing around with writing another Middle Grade book. That’s all I can tell you at the moment with out giving too much away. Let’s just say it involves aliens and will make you laugh out loud.

Is there anything that you would like to add?

Just to follow your dreams. Mine was to become an author, but it took me 40 years to be brave enough to actually sit down and write. Don’t let someone tell you you can’t do something. If you’re willing to work hard enough, anything is possible.
