When Paige Patterson travels to Arizona to spend the summer with her archeologist father, she expects answers. Why did her parents divorce? Why did her father choose his career over family? She doesn’t expect to be reunited with her best friend Emily Linton, a girl she has always admired and secretly wanted to emulate, or to find herself falling for the project manager’s son, Jalen Yazzi.

But the summer takes a terrible turn when Emily vanishes. As the police struggle for answers, Paige sets out to find the truth.
The search takes Paige from the Cliffside ruins of prehistoric Native Americans to the Navajo Nation to the horrifying possibility that the answer is much closer to home. Emily, it turns out, was not the only one good at hiding things.

Her father has no alibi for the night Emily disappeared. An intern with the motive insists he’s innocent. And Jalen has some secrets of his own.

Old bones might not be the only things buried in the ruins. As Paige digs deeper into Emily’s disappearance, she realizes that uncovering the truth may cost her everything—even her life.

Kim’s comment:

While BONE DEEP is a mystery, at its heart it has always been a love story. Jalen, who narrates the above passage, has an uncle who is a very powerful healer. When his uncle prophesies that Jalen is doomed to fail the girl he loves, it places Jalen in a terrible position. He’s falling for Paige, but he knows that his feelings may have fatal consequences. The more he loves her the more danger she is placed in. He wants to protect her from himself but he only seems to further endanger her. Can we protect the ones we love if it is us ourselves who are responsible for endangering them? While writing this story I wrestled with man’s intrinsic desire to find love and man’s fear of both love and its consequences. Love is the ultimate risk and the ultimate prize. I not only got to explore these themes, but also while writing BONE DEEP, I really enjoyed learning more about Native American mysticism in order to understand Jalen’s character better. Much is too private and sacred to be revealed, but the legends that abound from everything to creation to how coyote tried to steal the moon, are rich in culture and hauntingly beautiful.

Excerpt:

I don’t know much about love, but I do know about wanting. About wanting a girl who isn’t right for you, but not being able to help it. You try to ignore, rationalize, deny, but it’s there—like a thirst that burns your throat or a dream you don’t want to wake up from.

You will fall in love, but you won’t help her and she’s going to die. My uncle was drunk when he said those words, but how can I dismiss them? How can I hope that he was confused about the whole falling-in-love thing and Emily Linton was the doomed girl in his vision? How do I tell Paige? What if I don’t? What if it’s already too late?
