About Carol Ericson:

Romance Just Ain’t a Romance without a Few Dead Bodies

a guest post by romantic suspense author Carol Ericson

I think I must have a morbid turn of mind. The first romances I read at about age thirteen were the old Gothic romances told in the heroine’s point of view, in which she generally suspected the “hero” of trying to kill her. Sounds romantic, huh? Of course, after reading a few of these books, I eventually figured out the brooding, enigmatic hero wasn’t really trying to kill the heroine, but it made for some delicious thrills and chills. Those Gothic romances also included some mystery—a lost jewel, a “ghost” in the chapel, a missing governess—and were oh, so atmospheric. So, when I started writing romance, I naturally gravitated to romantic-suspense. A romance just ain’t a romance without a few dead bodies, a creepy stalker, or a terrorist or two.

Outside of my fiction reading and writing, I’m also fascinated by real-life stories of murder and mayhem. I discovered true crime when I read The Stranger Beside Me, Ann Rule’s book about Ted Bundy, the serial killer she knew personally before she knew he was a murderer. As disturbing as the story was, I became hooked on true crime and read several other Ann Rule books, along with true crime books by Joe McGinnis and of course, Vincent Bugliosi’s book, Helter Skelter, about the Charlie Manson murders.

In fact, that case is what got me reading the newspaper for the first time. I’m not sure what my parents thought about my picking up the front page of the newspaper, instead of the comics, and devouring it. Had they known I was reading articles about the gruesome murders that had taken place in Los Angeles, I’m sure they would’ve started giving me odd looks. Several years after the murders, I was at UCLA and a friend of mine in my dorm offered to take me to the Tate-Polanski house on Cielo Drive. So, I hopped on the back of his motorcycle and we climbed the winding roads of Benedict Canyon until we stopped on the street outside the gates to the house. Such a creepy feeling came over me that I urged my friend to go, go, GO!

The most recent true crime case that caught my attention was that of Robert Durst, the son of a wealthy real estate tycoon and the subject of the award-winning documentary The Jinx. This story has so many weird twists and turns, it’s almost unbelievable. At the core of the story is a complex, compelling, most likely evil human being, and perhaps that’s why I find true crime stories so interesting. In the end, they are psychological dramas, human puzzles and fascinating glimpses into a heart of darkness.

I don’t admit my morbid attraction for lurid true crime stories to many people, or at least I don’t call it a morbid attraction, but my interest in the dark side of human nature and the dark deeds that result from it seep into my own stories. Because a romance just ain’t a romance without a few dead bodies, a creepy stalker, or a terrorist or two.
