ARC Provided by Publisher in Exchange for an Honest Review

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.
When loss is all you know, how do you find true love?Beautiful Creatures meets The Body Finder in this spellbinding new trilogy.
All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lived with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead--a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Martina Boone was born in Prague and spoke several languages before learning English. Her first teacher in the U.S. made fun of her for not pronouncing the "wh" sound right, so she set out to master "all the words”—she's still working on that! In the meantime she’s writing contemporary fantasy set in the kinds of magical places she'd love to visit.
If you like romance dripping with mystery, mayhem, Spanish moss, and a bit of magic, she hopes you'll look forward to meeting Barrie, Eight, Cassie, Pru, Seven and the other characters of Watson Island.

"Barrie shook her head. Now that she was here, she couldn't leave. Her aunt was undeniably strange, but Pru's features added up to familiarity, to family. And the house, while rundown was magnificent. It was Watson's landing. Lulu's history. Barrie's own history."

OK...Seriously...this book is I N C R E D I B L E. I saw reviews about this book on Goodreads and could not wait to get my hands on it. I literally read this book in three days and it took my breath away.

Compulsion is a compelling, emotional debut YA novel set in a Southern Gothic atmosphere and revolves around a young girl whose mother passes away and she is sent to live with her only surviving relative, her mother's sister Lulu in South Carolina. Barrie knows that her mother ran away years ago from her family home but does not know the reason why.

Barrie arrives at the plantation that is also known as Watson's Landing and immediately feels drawn to it. Watson's Landing is one of the first pieces of this amazing story that grabbed me immediately. I am from Alabama so I could immediately imagine the scenery and feel what Barrie was feeling when she first experiences the plantation. I could imagine the trees covered in moss and the river gurgling that surrounds the home. I felt as though I was right there with Barrie as she experienced Watson's Landing for the first time.

Barrie moves to South Carolina with little information about her history and her family so she immediately begins to investigate and learn about her family. She has heard the stories about Watson's Landing that say it is cursed but doesn't know the details surrounding the myth. She searches the plantation to see if she can uncover any truth to the stories and find out the real reason why her mother left so many years ago and never came back.

Barrie meets a young man named Eight and learns that he is also a part of the curse that surrounds Watson's Landing. Barrie has always known that she is gifted. She has a gift for finding things that are "lost". She feels drawn to items and is compelled to find the lost items. Little does Barrie know but Eight is also gifted and always seems to know what Barrie is thinking before she even speaks. Barrie and Eight begin to realize that they connected in a supernatural way and that the must work together to uncover the mystery that surrounds their families. I love Eight's character and his immediate need to protect Barrie and care for her. He always seems to be there just when she needs someone.

So when Barrie first experiences the ancient spirit that cursed her family and lights the river on fire each night she is scared but also curious. She knows that somehow this spirit holds the key to the answers she is looking for. Barrie begins to ask questions and her questions draws the attention of enemies that want to harm both Eight and Barrie. This begins an incredible journey for Barrie and Eight and I was completely absorbed in each and every twist and turn...

"Not only was it strange to have anything lost at Watson's Landing, but also there was something strange about how and where things were lost. Why was the locked drawer the only pull of loss in the library?"

I just cannot explain how intense this book is. I literally could not put the book down. Each chapter had a new unexpected surprise. The characters are so wonderfully written and just grab you and take hold. Compulsion took me on an intense and emotional roller coaster ride. The southern charm and atmosphere of the book was the perfect setting to go along with the mysteries surrounding Watson's Landing.

I literally CANNOT wait to read the next book in the series! Fans of YA novels, swoony-worthy romance, and spell-binding mystery are absolutely going to fall in love with Compulsion.

Martina Boone is a phenomenal writer and Compulsion has been the first book in a while that when I was through reading it....I was literally IN AWE...I wanted more...I wanted more of the amazing characters, the setting, and the mystery. I cannot wait to see what the future has in hold for Barrie and Eight and what other dangers they are going to face in the future.....

Becca Fitzpatrick
Becca Fitzpatrick grew up reading Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden with a flashlight under the covers. She graduated college with a degree in health, which she promptly abandoned for storytelling. When not writing, she's most likely prowling sale racks for reject shoes, running, or watching crime dramas on TV. She is the author of the bestselling HUSH, HUSH Saga. Her new book BLACK ICE arrives in bookstores everywhere October 7, 2014.

Black Ice is one of the most intense and suspenseful books that I have read so far this year. This book is just absolutely phenomenal. This is one of those books that is the DEFINITION of page turner!!!! I mean...just WOW... Black Ice is in a league of its own in the YA industry. It has it all...I mean there just aren't enough words to describe how incredible this book is! and that cover!!??? Seriously? It just portrays the image of danger and suspense.....

Britt Pfeiffer is one of those characters that you just immediately connect with. Fitzpatrick has created an well-drawn, dynamic character her main character, Britt. Britt and her best friend, Korbie have planned a spring break getaway at Korbie's parents home in the Tetons of Wyoming. She has prepared for this getaway for weeks and has trained diligently for the back-packing trip she has planned.

Days before they leave for their trip, Britt and Korbie find out that Korbie's older brother, Calvin, who is also Britt's ex....will be chaperoneing them on this trip. This news is devestating to Britt because it has taken her months to get over Calvin but she is determined to set her feelings aside and have a good trip with her best friend.

Britt and Korbie head off to the mountains and get stuck in a snowstorm before they reach the cabin. They decide to try and reach shelter and come across a cabin way back in the woods and when they knock on the door they are welcomed by two handsome young men who dont really seem to belong.

One of the young guys, Mason, seem to be trying to help Britt and acts very strangely when she continues to ask questions. He begins to be very rude and warns her that she needs to leave as soon as possible. Britt doesnt listen and soon discovers the remains of a dead body in the cabin but by this time it is too late.

This begins an incredible, intense, heart-pounding journey for Britt. Little does she know but these two young men are really fugitives running from the law. Britt doesnt know the reason why they are fugitives but she is determined to find an answer.

There is a unforseen romance that begins and it is just breath-taking. It is the perfect romance written into a survival story where two people are not sure if they will be alive when they wake up. I loved it...I loved every minute of it and it felt so right for the two characters involved..(no spoilers..sorry)

Black Ice is one of the most incredible, addictive, frightening mysteries I have ever read. There are so many twists and turns and at times I found myself gasping and just staring at the pages. I mean...that really couldnt have just happened?? Did it? Seriously? I just literally LOVED this book. This is one of those books that I could just re-read over and over...yes it was that intense....The characters were phenomenal, the story was addictive, and the scenery just completed the whole package. Stranded in a snow storm, fighting to survive, and knowing there is a killer out there?? Ummmm Yes please......HA!

Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.
Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

First thing that grabbed my eye about this book was the fascinating cover. A dark forest with some type of red leaves encircling it creating a strange looking creature...possibly a winged animal...So mysterious...LOVE it!!

I have never read any of Kelley Armstrong's books but have definitely heard of her and have been told several times that I need to!! So when I started reading so many positive reviews on this book then I knew I had to try it!!

The prologue of the book really grabbed me and caught my attention....

"#1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong takes an exciting new direction with this big, breathtaking trilogy that blends fantasy, romance, horror, and pulse-pounding action, perfect for fans of Graceling and Game of Thrones."

I then continued to read it and it got kinda slow for me but I just had a feeling that I needed to keep reading and that the best was yet to come!! and I was exactly right! Around the middle of the book I absolutely COULD NOT put it down.

The main characters are twin sisters, Moria and Ashyn. They were marked and birth to be Seeker and Keeper of Edgewood. Their destiny is to lead a group into the Forest of the Dead each year to pay respect to the spirits who have passed and to help them to the next world. They are trained in fighting and secret rites of spirits which helps them to complete their mission.

I am not even sure where to start on describing this book and all of its awesomeness...It has a little bit of everything in it. It has romance, drama, action, and some serious horror and that is probably my favorite part. The forest is so creepy and mysterious and the obstacles that Moria and Ashyn face are at some points horrific. I found myself cringing and flipping pages so fast just to see what happened next. It seemed that their worst fears were all coming true and they were being tested at each turn.

"The face of something from a nightmare, gray skin stretched over bone, jutting chin and nose and cheekbones. No lips, just a slash of a mouth. And teeth. Fangs. So big his mouth could close. He let out another of those terrible cries, his jaw stretching open until all she could see were the fangs."

Moria and Ashyn also have guards that assist them through this journey and of course I loved both of them. Strong, angry Ronan and quiet, mysterious Gavril were incredible characters that added immensely to the storyline.

The twins also have their loyal "beasts" that are always at their sides and are born to protect them and stand by them till the day they die. I truly love this aspect of the story. I love when an author includes animals in the story and especially when they perform a specific function in the story line such as this. The animals are so important and cause many emotions throughout the story. Ashyn has Tova, a hound dog and Moira has Daigo, a wildcat.

"Tova was a Hound of the Immortals, almost as much a creature of legend as those in her sister's tales. Raised in a secret location and given only to Seekers, a Hound of the Immortals lived as long as a human and was said to be the reincarnation of a great warrior from the First Age."

Again, I cannot express how much I loved this book!! Yes it was slow at first but hang in there because it was REALLY GOOD!!! I cannot wait until the second one comes out and I will read it immediately!! and now I want to go and read all of Kelley Armstrong's books because I love how much emotion she put into this book and I am positive her other books are just as good as this one!!

***I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to HarperCollins for allowing me to review this phenomenal book!!! and also to Melissa Murray for recommending it!! As always she was spot on that I would love it!!***

Bree Despain

The Short: Bree rediscovered her childhood love for creating stories when she took a semester off college to write and direct plays for at-risk, inner-city teens from Philadelphia and New York. She currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband, two young sons, and her beloved TiVo. The Dark Divine is Bree's debut novel.
The Long: As a kid, Bree would staple folded papers to make her own "novels." As a teen, she wrote stories in notebooks while her friends waited for the next page to be finished. Her teachers told her she should be a writer. But Bree thought only special people could be writers, so as the years past, she settled into the idea of becoming a lawyer or something else just as ordinary.
Bree rediscovered her childhood love for creating stories when she took a semester off college to write and direct plays for at-risk, inner city teens from Philadelphia and New York. With a renewed passion for story, and the young adult audience, she returned to Brigham Young University, filled her schedule with creative writing and literature classes, and started writing stories again. But regular life kicked in, and she soon found herself married with a new baby, working full-time, and with very little writing done.
That’s when the universe threw a pick-up truck in her path. The car accident left Bree with an understanding that life was too short to not do what you absolutely love. A few days later, her husband brought home a used laptop computer, placed it by her bedside, and said, “You’d better start writing.” Her life has never been the same since.

In a moment of karmic perfection, Bree received the offer to purchase The Dark Divine on the 6th anniversary of the car accident that put her back on the path to becoming an author.

Wow...The Shadow Prince takes readers on a  riveting, incredible fantasy ride full of romance, suspense, and action!!! I loved every chapter of this incredible book!!Bree Despain is a rock star author!

I love  all of the Greek mythology in this story! It just absolutely makes the story. It is so interesting and ...to me..romantic! Which is a huge plus!

The main characters, Daphne and Haden, are just absolutely incredible. I love how we follow the story from both point of views. It helps the reader to learn just how important each side is.... which in turn allows us to feel for both characters throughout the book.

"There are many paths. And we choose our paths with the decisions we make. But escaping your destiny is not as easy as it seems. The moment you chose to leave the haven of Ellis, your and Haden's destinies became intertwined."

Daphne has been through so much in her life. She was abandoned by her father and raised by a mother who has kept her secluded in a small town and never allowed to leave. She feels smothered and yearns to be free. Her dream comes true when her father, a huge rock star,  just suddenly appears in her life and wants to take her back to his home to live. It is a whole new world for her full of money and the rich and famous and....lots of secrets.

Daphne has an incredible voice and seems to take a lot after her father. She doesn't just sing...she feels the music. She knows she is different than everyone else she just doesn't know how.

Haden is a disgraced prince of the Underrealm and dreams of earning his standing back as Prince of the Underrealm and ruling. He is chosen by the Oracle to complete a task that will change the fates of his people forever. He is told to go to the mortal world and bring back a young girl whose destiny is to help save their world.

"And I am the infallible voice of the universe," the priest says, his voice echoing as the Oracle speaks through him once again. "I have chosen my Champion. The boy is the one who can save you."

Although I LOVE Haden and Daphne...my most favorite character out of this entire book is....BRIM, the hellcat!! I love animals and I love when an author includes them in a story because to me it feels like it brings softness and humanity to the story. Everyone has a weakness for animals and I find myself pulling for the animal in the story! LOL! Yes I am serious! and Brim's character is awesome. Brim is loving yet extremely protective and devoted. I love the events that occur with Brim throughout the story as well. I love how connected Brim and Haden are and how Brim can always find Haden no matter where he is.

"I'm not surprised it is Brimstone that finds me...."

"As a runty newborn, she'd been tossed out of the nest by her mother, left to die in the Wastelands. That's why I'd saved her--and that's why she rarely left my side and could always find me no matter where I was---we'd both been rejected by the only family we'd ever really known. That made us kin."

From the very first page of this book to the very last...I was completely obsessed. I mean COMPLETELY obsessed. The connection between Haden and Daphne is so breathtaking. They are so drawn to each other and only Haden knows that their destinies are bringing them together. There is so much action and suspense throughout the entire book. There is  so much mystery and intense moments that I found myself cringing as I turned the pages....and I LOVED IT!!!!

The synopsis from the book states "A pulsating romance of epic proportions" and I totally and completely agree.  This is one of my most favorite books of 2014 by far! I literally cannot wait to read the sequel and follow this incredible adventure with Haden and Daphne...and of course BRIM!!!! If you love ya fantasy, action, and romance then this book is definitely for you! It is just phenomenal!! Bree Despain...YOU ROCK and are at the top of my favorite authors list!!

**I want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Egmont and Melissa Marie for the opportunity to review this phenomenal, incredible, AMAZING book!!**

Courtney C. Stevens

Courtney C. Stevens
Courtney C. Stevens grew up in Kentucky and lives in Nashville, Tennessee. She is an adjunct professor and a former youth minister. Her other skills include playing hide-and-seek, climbing trees, and being an Olympic torch bearer. Faking Normal is her first novel.

I am not sure where to start...I am just absolutely in awe at this book. There are so many words to describe how utterly amazing this book was..here are just a few that come to mind:
phenomenal, incredible, touching, emotional, real, stunning....perfect.

I read the synopsis of this book after seeing lots of reviewers raving about it on goodreads and it immediately grabbed my attention. I just had this "feeling" that it was going to be great. Well great was an understatement. This is one of those books that stays with you long after you read the last page.

"Faking normal is a skill I learned seventy-seven days ago. but tonight it's going to require everything I have."

The cover of the book portrays the main character, Alexi, perfectly. The cover model looks sullen, sad, and yet poignant. Alexi has a secret. A secret that no one knows. A secret that she has kept hidden away for a while and it is slowly eating away at her. She wakes up each day with one purpose...to keep her ugly secret hidden and "fake normal." Alexi's character is so easy to love and admire. I felt so much for her with each turn of the page. She is so strong and yet so weak. Something terrible happens to her one summer night and she has told no one about it. She suffers so much each and every day because of what happened on that tragic night. She doesn't sleep, she hurts herself, and yet she gets up every morning and pretends like everything is ok. No one in her family even notices how much she is suffering and hiding deep inside.

Ah...Bodee Lennox, the young boy whose father murdered his mother as he watched is invited into Alexi's home by her parents. They want to take him in and try to help him cope with the horrible tragedy that is his life. Bodee is an incredible character. He immediately sees in Alexi what no one else does. He knows she is hurting and they slowly develop an deep friendship that will eventually change their lives. I love how they "see" each other when no one else does. Their friendship is so beautiful and I found myself rooting for them during the entire book.

"I've lived all but two weeks of my life without Bodee. But now, sitting with him in my fort, I know these two weeks have been God walking right into mu life like he has flesh and Kool-Aid-colored hair. The gospel according to Bodee Lennox. His safety. His protection. And love."

This is such an emotionally riveting book about truth and consequences. It touched me in so many ways. The characters and the plot were so beautifully written and I wish I could just read it all over again. Yes...it was that good. Courtney Stevens has entered into the YA industry with a bang. She will have a permanent spot on my "Authors To Watch" list.

If you love a book about truth, love, friendships, heartache, and surviving tragedy then this book is for you. Please..please..read this book. I promise you will not regret it.

** Thank you to HarperTeen for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review.**
