Which came first, the title or the novel?
It wasn't called Resurgence until long after the story had been finished The original titles for the trilogy was Kingdom Come, Kingdom Falling and Kingdom's End. The publisher didn't like those for some reason, so they were retitled to Reckoning, Renegade and Resurgence
What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Without wanting to spoil too much, there's one where Silver knowingly walks herself into great danger - and uses only her words to get herself out again. The easy option is a big action scene, or some sort of shenanigans but I liked that it was her smartness that worked.
Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Anything can be fixed in a second draft!
What was your favorite book in 2015?
The Darkest Secret by Alex Marwood. It's a great thriller but there are a pair of sisters central to the story who live apart from each other. I live away from my brother and sisters and a lot of it really struck with me.
Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
Not difficult as such but the final chapter was always how it was going to end. I wrote it in public, on a train travelling to London, surrounded by tourists and it was a really odd experience.
Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
It's not necessarily a separate process. When I'm on the first draft, I'm often going back into earlier chapters and cutting stuff, or fiddling around with the order. That first version is always my favourite part, getting everything out until the ideas are finally something real on a page. It's always a great relief once that part's done.
