FFBC Blog Tour, Interview, & Giveaway: All That Burns (Ryan Graudin)

All That Burns (All That Glows #2)
by Ryan Graudin
Publisher: Harper Teen
Release Date: February 10th 2015

In this thrilling sequel to All That Glows, the worlds of magic and mortal are colliding as London celebrates its new king, marking an era of unity between the Faery realm and the human one. Emrys, the Faery guard to the British royal family, sacrificed her powers to be with King Richard, choosing love over immortality. But now, as Emrys struggles to navigate her place between the Faery queen’s court and London’s lavish galas, danger looms beyond the Thames. When a prisoner with dark, strange magic breaks out of Queen Titania’s labyrinthine prison, endangering Emrys's king and sparking an uprising, Emrys must make the hardest decision of all.
Will she reclaim her magic to save Richard’s life and lose him forever? Or stay powerless as the kingdom goes down in flames?

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

ALL THAT BURNS is the sequel to my debut novel ALL THAT GLOWS. The first book (SPOILERS) is the story of Emrys, a powerful, immortal Fae who is tasked to guard the British royal family against Soul Feeders and assassins. She ends up falling in love with Prince Richard, sacrificing her magic in order to be with him. ALL THAT BURNS explores the consequences of this choice and the clash of magic vs mortal on a much wider scale.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

Princess Anabelle (King Richard’s sister) was just a secondary character in the first book, yet in ALL THAT BURNS her role expands. I loved exploring her personality beyond all of the princess-y trappings she had in the first book. She’s a no nonsense, get things done kind of girl.

Which came first, the title or the novel?

About 30% of the rough draft was down by the time we settled on a title. The first book sold under the title LUMINANCE HOUR and it wasn’t until a year later my marketing team decided on ALL THAT GLOWS. They actually chose the title because I proposed ALL THAT BURNS for the sequel. They loved it that much. I love the title too.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I know this sounds like a cop-out (and maybe it is), but I’m proud of the whole book. Every writer I’ve talked to has told me how hard sequels are to write, and I lived that truth out to its fullest extent with this novel. It was a true labor of blood, sweat and tears. As well as hives. To finally have a finished product in my hands is so rewarding and relieving!

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

I’m learning new things every day! It’s technically still my debut year and ALL THAT BURNS is my third book to hit the shelves in that time (ALL THAT GLOWS being the first and THE WALLED CITY being the second). Reading reviews, going to signings, being on panels, meeting readers… It’s been a whirlwind trying to balance all of this, almost with writing and revising new projects! I’m learning to always be working on the next thing and to put my own personal worth outside of my authorial identity.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I think the typography is my favorite. I’m a sucker for flowy, pretty letters.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?

I am really itching to get my hands on V. E. Schwab’s A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC. I loved her work in VICIOUS and the premise of this new novel sounds amazing! (World hopping between parallel Londons and cross-dressing pirates? Yes please!)

What was your favorite book in 2014?

Probably DREAMS OF GODS AND MONSTERS by Laini Taylor. I loved that entire series and she wrapped it up so perfectly!

What’s up next for you?

I have an alternative history project coming out with Little Brown. I can’t say too much about it yet, except that it’s the first book in a duology and it’s due out Fall 2015.

My name is Ryan and I've been writing ever since I grabbed one of my dad's old tax ledgers and created this masterpiece: see image.
My writing has since improved, though my obsession with wolves has remained relatively the same (I even own a wolf-hybrid pup.) My childhood was a happy, sunny thing. I grew up on a steady diet of fairytales, salt-marshes, music and brothers who would re-enact Redwall battles with me in the back yard. I went to an artsy sort of high-school that allowed cello recitals in the hallways and impromptu poetry slams in the cafeteria. It was there I decided that writing was what I wanted to do more than anything.
I'm officially a grownup now (I suppose one must admit that once they turn 26). My diet still includes fairytales, salt-marshes and art, but there are a few new loves thrown in. A big one is travel. Pieces of my heart are scattered like breadcrumbs all over the globe--I've bartered them off for writing inspiration, so I suppose it's a fair trade.
When I'm not cramming my earthly belongings into a backpack and waiting in airport security lines, I'm doing one of the following: Writing YA novels, Photographing weddings with my husband, Making our little white cottage more homey, Playing with my wolf pup, Trying out Korean récipes, Haunting local coffee shops with my friends.

  1. I like the world building of this novel. I like the premise of magic and faeries in a near contemporary setting.
    Cheers, Ryan!
