There’s a meteor headed for Earth, and there is only one way to survive.

With her criminal record, she doesn’t qualify for a place on an Ark, one of the five massive bioships designed to protect earth’s survivors during the meteor strike that looks set to destroy the planet. Only a select few will be saved – like her mom, dad, and brother – all of whom have long since turned their backs on Char.
If she ever wants to redeem herself, Char must use all the tricks of the trade to swindle her way into outer space, where she hopes to reunite with her family, regardless of whether they actually ever want to see her again, or not . . .

Laura Nolan
Laura Liddell Nolen grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she spent lots of time playing make-believe with her two younger brothers. They supplemented their own stories with a steady diet of space- and superhero-themed movies, books, and television. The daughter of a comic book collector, she learned how to handle old comics at an early age, a skill she’s inordinately proud of to this day.
Laura began work on her first novel, The Ark, in 2012, following the birth of her daughter Ava, a tiny rebel and a sweetheart on whom the novel’s main character is loosely based. Completion of The Ark was made possible in part due to an SCBWI Work-in-Progress Award.
Laura loves coffee, dogs, and making lists. She has a degree in French and a license to practice law, but both are frozen in carbonite at present. She lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband and two young children, and their dog Miley, who is a very good girl.

The Ark is a young adult dystopian novel filled with science fiction and action. The first thing that grabbed my attention about this book was the cover. I love post-apocalyptic stories and the cover of this book shows a young girl looking up at the sky as meteors fall......

The story is about a young girl's journey to survive as meteors are about to fall out of the sky and decimate Earth. Once the meteors hit they will kill all life on earth and destroy the planet. The only way for humans to escape are to be on one of the five arks that the government has built that will take the survivors to a new planet called Eirenea.  The only way to get on one of the Arks is to gain a boarding pass through a lottery process or to be one of the rich or smart humans that have already been chosen to be on the arks. The government picked over half of the people that will be on the arks by choosing people that have the brains and skills to re-populate the new world.

Char is a 16 year old girl who stays in trouble and has finally been placed in prison to serve her sentence for all her bad choices. Her family are all chosen to go on the ark so they come and visit Char one last time before they leave. Char is hoping to use this chance to change her life and apologize to her family yet the visit is shorter than expected and Char doesn't get the chance to explain.......but while her parents are telling her good-bye her mother slips something in her hand. Once they are gone, Char opens her hand and realizes that her mother has slipped her a boarding pass for the same ark that her family is on, The North American Ark.

Char realizes she must escape prison and get on that ark if she wants to survive. This begins her journey and also the main plot of the story. Char's journey is full of twists and turns and a little bit of romance....

Char's envision of this new world turns out to be nothing like she imagined it and the secrets she uncovers will make her question her choices.....I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science fiction and post-apocalyptic stories....The only fault I have is the cliffhanger at the end....because I really want to know what happened!!!!!!
