Welcome to my tour stop for Four (Their Dead Lives #1) by Zack Scott. This is a zombie apocalypse horror, comedy, action & adventure. The tour runs October 12-23 with reviews, interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.
A tragic past. A destined reunion. A decaying hope.
In Southern California, four friends must face a haunting nightmare from high school in order to save the future of humanity. But will their personal conflicts get in the way? Battling for survival, these fated four will choose whether to follow a destined path or continue their dead lives, while the zombie apocalypse feeds them one cliche after another.
Zack Scott is the author of THEIR DEADS LIVES, ONE PISSED OFF SHARK, and several short stories he wrote for the 2013 Flash Fiction Challenge, where he made it to the final round. Although he’s visited many areas in the world, Zack has lived in Southern California most of his life. He grew up in Los Angeles, attended undergrad at CSUCI in Ventura County, and completed law school down in sunny San Diego. More recently, he was living the startup life in Silicon Valley with the 500 Startups accelerator program. He is licensed to practice law in California, but more importantly he likes to hang his pants on his desk chair rather than his closet. When he’s not writing stories, Zack can be found in a never-ending wrestling match with his dog Leo or cooking pasta while wearing a Chargers apron.
1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I wanted to write a story about a group of friends during the apocalypse. I was also obsessed with zombies at the time I started writing FOUR, so the setting was easy to pick.
I also have a bet with my friend I’ll write a trilogy before I turn thirty. FOUR and the second book VITAL BLOOD are finished and released. I’m working on the third now. I turn thirty on October 9, 2016.
2. Who is your favorite character in the book?
Kale is my favorite because he’s the craziest of the main characters and goes through my favorite arc. Scot is a close a runner-up, followed by Sadie or Evans.
3. Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel.
The title, and the series title, changed a few times. One of the sillier titles was ZOMBIES ATE MY FRIENDS.
4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Probably the attack at the biker restaurant. It was action packed, suspenseful, and showed different sides of the character Scot. I won’t get into too many details because of spoilers.
I’m also really proud of a scene involving Kale, but that’s all I’ll say about it.
5. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Keep writing. Even if the writing is terrible, just keep doing it.
Also, rewriting is a writer’s best friend.
6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?
The simplicity of it. Simple covers are my favorite.
7. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?
Oh man I’m really behind on new releases. I just started getting into Lehane so I’ve got a pile of his books I need to get through. I also want to read IN THE HEART OF THE SEA before the film release.
8. What was your favorite book in 2014?
THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir. I want to see the movie. Have you seen it? I hear it’s good. I’m a sci-fi nerd at heart.
9. What’s up next for you?
I’m finishing the second and final sequel to FOUR. I’m aiming to release it this December. I was also working on a crime thriller and a suspenseful romance but taking a break from those until THEIR DEAD LIVES is complete.
10. Is there anything that you would like to add?
Just a big thanks to anyone who reads my books. Your support means a lot to me. Oh, and go Clippers. This season we win it all. I can feel it.
