Beautiful Creatures meets The Raven Boys in the spellbinding second novel in the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy that “skillfully blends rich magic and folklore with adventure, sweeping romance, and hidden treasure” (Publishers Weekly, on Compulsion).

Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.

A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.

While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead—a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.

Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn't what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

"Perceptions were fickle things, as formless as smoke and just as dangerous. Weeks ago, when Barrie had first seen the plantation her mother had run away from in her teens, the light clawing through the the haunts of Spanish moss along the avenue of ancient oaks had seemed ominous, and the down-at-the-heels mansion beyond the trees had appeared forbidding."

Persuasion is the sequel to the phenomenal book Compulsion about a young girl who has the ability to "find" lost things. Persuasion picks up right where Compulsion left off and Barrie is recovering from her godfather, Mark's, death and she is still trying to figure out why Cassie betrayed her when she is thrown into another intriguing mystery at Watson's Island.

I was completely and utterly wrapped up in Compulsion and had no idea how Persuasion could be any better.....and then I opened the book.

Persuasion is so full of emotion and heart and the writing is so lyrical and descriptive and I really felt as though I was experiencing each moment right along with Barrie and Eight. The story is an breath-taking family saga with deep dark secrets that can affect every aspect of Barrie and Eight's lives and their friends and family. The secrets and twists are so much more intense in Persuasion and really dig into human nature and real life issues.

I loved the introduction of new characters and all the new mysteries that came along with them...and of course I LOVE the southern aspect of the story since I am from the South and totally understand the charm that really sets the atmosphere for this amazing book.

The one thing that bothered me a little was how much turmoil that was going on within Barrie and Eight's relationship. They seemed to be so tense with each other and so many issues kept occurring that seemed to pull them apart. I really wanted Barrie and Eight to experience happiness and hopefully the 3rd book will reflect this!!

"At that moment, the gifts didn't matter. There was only skin, and breath, and touch. For that moment, in that moment, they were each enough."

The whole story was so fascinating and I just felt like the intensity just continued to build throughout the whole book. Each chapter was so engaging and a new twist was introduced and just totally had me engrossed in this phenomenal story.

I still feel as though there is more to Seven & Barrie's Mothers story and I really hope we learn more about their past in Book 3, Illusion.

Southern charm meets spell-binding mystery in this amazing sequel to Compulsion....full of suspense, magic, intrigue, and secrets...this book will have you turning pages deep into the night.
