Since then, Skylar has lived in a numb haze, struggling to forget her past and dull the pain of losing her sister. But the secrets and memories Piper left behind keep taunting Skylar—whispering that the only way to get her sister back is to stop Gardnerville’s murderous cycle once and for all.

I Am A Reader Book Blast & Giveaway: Rubber Soul (Greg Kihn)

Rubber Soul
Rubber Soul by Greg Kihn Greg Kihn is a rock star, seasoned radio host and author. Rubber Soul, his latest novel is inspired by intimate interviews that he conducted with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Pete Best, Yoko Ono and Patti Harrison. Though Rubber Soul is fiction, as Greg says it is “100% historically accurate” and an candid glimpse of the phenomenon that is The Beatles. Rubber Soul is a an innovation in the Rock Thriller genre, taking readers on a rollicking ride through The Beatles legacy from the early days in Liverpool to six sold out shows per night in Hamburg and full-fledged Beatlemania. Dust Bin Bob runs into some lads from Liverpool at his second hand shop on Penny Lane. The lads: John, Paul, George and Ringo and Dust Bin Bob become firm friends, sharing vinyl that will spark a revolution. Murder, mystery and Beatlemania mayhem ensues—with the boys narrowly avoiding an international incident and an attempted assassination. It’s the ultimate Beatles story that could have happened!

Praise “There’s no one more qualified to write a rock-and-roll novel than Greg Kihn. He’s the real deal and at his Kihntillating best in this book.” – Guy Kawasaki, former chief evangelist of Apple “Rubber Soul is a magical mystery tour de force by Greg Kihn, a rocker who obviously has a way with words as well as music. His imagined story about the Beatles is fast-moving, full of twists and tension, and musical nuggets and insights. Great story-telling set to a Fab-four beat.” – Ben Fong Torres “Rubber Soul captures what Rock-n-Roll is all about – and Greg Kihn would certainly know! This nearly-true story of the Beatles is pure magic and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.” – Eddie Money “Greg Kihn is the most compelling author who ever had a top five singing career. Rubber Soul is a fantastic story by Greg, with an historical back beat. I urge you not to miss this.” – Joan Jett “I’m happy to report that Rubber Soul, the latest work by my pal Greg Kihn, has correct punctuation, complete sentences, even full paragraphs – some of the exact same literary devices that can be found in the greatest novels our culture has ever produced! It’s also written in English, which happens to be one of my very favorite languages.” – “Weird Al” Yankovic “While the RIAA may not be able to certify Kihn’s work with a gold disc, fans of Kihn and The Beatles, as well as those who long for the simpler yet magical time of the 1960’s will thoroughly enjoy and fall in love with Rubber Soul. They certainly don’t write ‘em like this anymore.” – Chris Shapiro, RetroPulse
Rubber Soul Tour

greg
Author Greg Kihn NBC called Greg Kihn “Rock’s True Renaissance Man” and for good reason. As part of the eponymous band he has: toured the globe, had hit records, been inducted into the San Jose Rock Hall Of Fame, opened for the Rolling Stones and jammed with Bruce Springsteen. You may have heard of his smash worldwide #1 hit “Jeopardy” and “The Breakup Song”, not to mention the parody written by Weird Al Yankovic. Being a famous and successful rock star is only one part of the mosaic that is Greg’s story. In the 90s Greg poured his passion for lyrics into writing fiction—publishing four novels, one of which “Horror Show” was nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. In this vein, Greg merged his love of writing with Rock and Roll and wrote “Rubber Soul”—a unique rock murder mystery featuring The Beatles. The inspiration for this novel came from Greg’s interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Pete Best, Yoko Ono and Patti Harrison. In this way Greg gained exclusive access to the biggest band ever to exist. “Rubber Soul” is a work of fiction, but it is 100% historically accurate and a story that only rock veteran Greg Kihn could have written.

5 Star Review & Giveaway: The Madman's Daughter (Megan Shepherd)

The Madman's Daughter (The Madman's Daughter, #1)Hardcover, 420 pages
Published January 29th 2013 by Balzer + Bray
ARC Provided by Publisher for Honest Review

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.
Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.
Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.
Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

Megan Shepherd was "born" into the book world, growing up in her parents' independent bookstore in Western North Carolina. She is the author of THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER trilogy (Balzer+Bray/2013), and THE CAGE trilogy (Balzer+Bray/2015). When Megan is not writing, she can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains. She is represented by Josh Adams at Adams Literary.

Hmmm...Where do I start with this review? The Madman's Daughter was unlike anything I have ever read before. I devoured it in a matter of days and was left in a state of awe. I wanted more....immediately.

I also have a weakness for a beautiful cover....and this cover is breath-taking. It is simple and yet has so much meaning. Juliet is beautifully portrayed in a white gown with red ribbons , her long black hair wild and windblown and is walking barefoot along the shore. She looks captivating and lost all at the same time...

The synopsis of the story states that this is somewhat of a retelling of The Island of Dr Moreau. So this told me immediately that there would be plenty of creepiness and secrets involved in this book and WOW was I right. The creepy factor is HIGH in this book and is exactly what makes it so good.

The main character, Juliet, is so strong and intense. She is a heroine who has the skills and the want to survive in a world unlike any other. She is orphaned at a young age and placed into the work system in order to survive. Her father was a world renowned surgeon who is found to be "psychotic" and disowned from his life and the people around him. Her mother died of a illness while Juliet was still young. Juliet watched her father perform surgeries and learned everything that she knows about the medical field from his teachings.

"When I cleaned those rooms, late at night after the medical students had gone home to their warm bed, the sound of my hard-bristle brush echoed in the operation theater, down the twisting halls, into the storage spaces where they kept the things of nightmares. Other peoples nightmares, that is. Dead flesh and sharpened scalpels didn't bother me. I was my father's daughter, after all. My nightmares were made of darker things."

Juliet uncovers the fact that her father is still alive and so she sets off on a journey to the mysterious island where he has taken refuge to try and get some answers to her past as well as her future. She is accompanied by her fathers assistant, Montgomery. I absolutely adore Montgomery. He is kind, compassionate, and yet dangerous in his own way.

"I knew what he wanted to say. He loved me. He loved the half-mad, filthy girl standing in a pool of formaldehyde."

Juliet discovers so many mysteries and horrors when she arrives on the island. This is such a high-paced book and I could not stop turning the pages. Every chapter is a new adventure and a new secret come to life. It was just phenomenal. It was everything that I love in a book...survival, romance, mystery, and action...LOTS OF ACTION.

I literally cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel to find out what is in store for Juliet next...I mean I can seriously only imagine...Megan Shepherd is an author to watch for..She is a phenomenal writer and knows how to write in order to keep the reader attached to the story till the very last page...WOW....Just incredible...

YA Bound Book Blitz, Review & Giveaway: Pods (Michelle Pickett)

PODs
Release Date: 06/24/13
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Paperback/ebook
312 pages

Summary from Goodreads:Seventeen-year-old Eva is a chosen one. Chosen to live, while others meet a swift and painful death from an incurable virus so lethal, a person is dead within days of symptoms emerging. In the POD system, a series of underground habitats built by the government, she waits with the other chosen for the deadly virus to claim those above. Separated from family and friends, it's in the PODs she meets David. And while true love might not conquer all, it's a balm for the broken soul.
After a year, scientists believe the population has died, and without living hosts, so has the virus. That's the theory, anyway. But when the PODs are opened, survivors find the surface holds a vicious secret. The virus mutated, infecting those left top-side and creating... monsters.
Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.

Praise for the Amazon Bestselling PODs:
"5 Stars! I loved this book. I have been kind of bogged down with dystopias lately, but this was amazing. It was so cool to see life before the 'event', to see Eva wrestle with her choices and then, to watch her change as she lived inside the PODs...Yes, there are zombies. Yes, there's a little romance. But I think, at its heart, PODs is a coming of age story about Eva and how she grows from a girl into a strong, decisive woman during this period of absolute destruction. And Pickett writes it beautifully." ~ Sherry Ficklin, author of "Extracted"

"I was blown away by this debut novel from Michelle Pickett! Rather than feeling like I was reading a book, I actually sometimes felt like I was actually watching the characters' lives progress; it was kind of weird! The emotions that Eva felt were so raw and real, and I think Michelle really captured the emotions that one would be feeling in a post-apocalyptic world...PODs may very well be one of the next big things in YA, so I am very happy to have been one of the ones that was part of the beginning of it all! Congrats Michelle on your YA debut and I am looking forward to more by you!  I gave PODs a well-deserved 5/5 stars!  " ~Phil book reviewer at Stack of Hardbacks

5 glowing, sparkling stars for this one!...I absolutely adored every character Michelle introduces us to. This book isn't just about a romance, or two people fighting some battle. This book allows us to get to know several, amazing, diverse characters who all grab your heart (even a few who have attitude issues). They all held such an important place in the story… Now for the plot. Holy crap!... Michelle did a flippin' fantastic job giving us each piece of this puzzle… I won't go into details about what happens after they are removed from the POD but O-M-G! The action never stops…This book seriously needs to be a movie. I could picture every detail and already see it playing out on screen. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!”  ~Jessica of Total Bookaholic

About the Author:I'm a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction and paranormal romances and have recently started dabbling in young adult contemporary romance. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and eat way too many while I write, have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one, and I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television. An unabashed romantic, I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days.I wrote my debut young adult novel, PODs, in 2011. PODs, a science/fiction, post-apocalyptic romance, will be released June 4, 2013 through the amazing Spencer Hill Press.  My second young adult title, Milayna, a paranormal romance, will release through Spencer Hill Press beginning in March 2014. Milayna is a standalone, with series potential. I discovered the book Pods when searching through goodreads. I love anything zombie, post-apocalyptic, dystopian, and young adult so I knew this was for me. I received the book from the publisher and immediately dived into it.

The story begins with the world basically being overrun by a virus that kills humans within 24 hours of infection. The scientists and Dr's have no idea how it is transmitted and have no idea how to stop it. The only decision they can come up with to help the human race not get exterminated ....is to hold a lottery and place the people who win in what they call PODS. These are basically underground bunkers that are created and stocked with enough food, water, and other materials to allow the few that are picked to survive for years. Which in turn they are hoping these people can outlive the virus and eventually come out and start over.

Evangelina Mae Evans (Eva) is the main character in this story. She is a 17 year old high school student whose world is turned upside down when she is chosen for the PODS and must give up everything to survive. I absolutely love Eva. I connected with her character immediately. Everything about her made me want her to survive. She was strong, heroic, and yet had a tenderness about her that just made her personality.

Once she is placed in the PODS she meets the people that she will have to live with over the next year. She makes friends and even discovers a new relationship. She discovers David. Now for me, this is where the story begins...I absolutely love the relationship between David and Eva. They are meant for each other...true soul mates. Their fight to be together and to overcome this terrible disease is phenomenal.

There is so much that happens in this amazing book. I read this book in three days. I just could not put it down. I kept turning the pages to find out what happened next! If you love a good survival story mixed in with an amazing romance then this book is for you!!

The author Michelle Pickett is now going on my favorite author list!! She writes incredible books and cares what her readers think. She interacts with her fans and responds to their posts! It truly means something when an author wants to interact with her/his fans!!!! So 5 Stars for this book and 5 Stars for the author!!!!

5 Star Review & ARC Giveaway: Dear Killer (Katherine Ewell)

Dear KillerHardcover, 368 pages
Expected publication: April 1st 2014 by Katherine Tegen Books
ARC Provided by Publisher for an Honest Review

Rule One—Nothing is right, nothing is wrong.Rule Two—Be careful.Rule Three—Fight using your legs whenever possible, because they’re the strongest part of your body. Your arms are the weakest.Rule Four—Hit to kill. The first blow should be the last, if at all possible.Rule Five—The letters are the law.

Kit takes her role as London’s notorious “Perfect Killer” seriously. The letters and cash that come to her via a secret mailbox are not a game; choosing who to kill is not an impulse decision. Every letter she receives begins with “Dear Killer,” and every time Kit murders, she leaves a letter with the dead body. Her moral nihilism and thus her murders are a way of life—the only way of life she has ever known. But when a letter appears in the mailbox that will have the power to topple Kit’s convictions as perfectly as she commits her murders, she must make a decision: follow the only rules she has ever known, or challenge Rule One, and go from there.Katherine Ewell’s Dear Killer is a sinister psychological thriller that explores the thin line between good and evil, and the messiness of that inevitable moment when life contradicts everything you believe.

Katherine Ewell
18-year-old author of YA thriller DEAR KILLER, to be published by HarperCollins in April 2014. Stanford freshman, horse lover, avid reader, science and sci-fi lover, girly-girl, geek.

I have seen some mixed reviews for this book and to tell you the truth...that is exactly why I wanted to read it. A book that brings about so many different opinions is exactly what I love to read and I absolutely LOVED this book. It was so different than anything I have ever read and I adored it. I mean a teenage serial killer?? UMMM YEAH!!!! This book was just so disturbingly creepy...and I LOVED IT....

"Rule One. Nothing is right, nothing is wrong.
That is the most important guideline, and the hardest one for most people to understand-but I have understood it my entire life, from the moment I laid my hands on the first victim's neck to this very moment as I think about the blood under my fingernails and the body I have so recently left behind. Nothing is right and nothing is wrong. For some people a thing may be right, and for others it may be wrong. There is no greater truth to morality-it is merely an opinion."

The main character, Kit, is a high school student who lives a normal life except for the fact that secretly she is London's notorious serial killer who is called the Perfect Killer. Kit has a mailbox that she uses to take new "cases." People write to her and send her money to perform the killings. Kit reads each letter and does intense research to ensure that the people that are to be killed have earned this. She does not fulfill any requests that she doesn't believe are warranted. Kit is very meticulous and knows what she is doing. She leaves no evidence, no witnesses, and has the police completely stumped. This is her life. This is what she does for a living and she is great at it.

Kit is a phenomenal character and I loved to see how she interacted with people around her and how she performs these murders with no remorse what so ever. Her character is just so wild. She knows what she is doing and she is extremely intelligent and her demeanor is well above her age.

One particular letter she gets brings her to question everything she has done and to rethink her life as the Perfect Killer.

"It was hard sometimes, watching the news when my mother turned it on while she made dinner, seeing blood on the television screen. The news people were always so preoccupied with it. Murders in London, turmoil in the Middle East, videos of people being shot in the streets, pictures of children who vanished and were found decapitated in the woods three months later. And every time the began to talk about violence, things bubbled up within me. Many emotions, but two were the most dominant: irritation with those who killed for the wrong reasons, and impatience for the day that I would again have the power of life and death."

I was completely absorbed in this book and everything it had to offer. I must truly say that it is different than ANYTHING I have ever read before. It is wild, emotional, disturbing, and all together FASCINATING. It is also one of those books that you will either love or you wont and I hope that anyone who reads it falls under the category of LOVE. This is a stand-alone novel and that is one thing that I did not like because I want more Kit...I want more of the Perfect Killer.

There is so much that I want to say about this book but it is really one that you have to read yourself...experience yourself...and hopefully become as obsessed with it as I was. Each chapter was something new and fascinating. With Kit you just never know what you are going to get.

Katherine Ewell has made her mark in the YA industry with this phenomenal debut novel and I will be looking forward to anything she writes in the future.

**I want to give Katherine Tegan Books a huge THANK YOU for sending me the ARC of this awesome book in exchange for an honest review.**
