5+ Star Review: I Hunt Killers (Barry Lyga)

What if the world's worst serial killer...was your dad?

But he's also the son of the world's most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could—from the criminal's point of view.
And now bodies are piling up in Lobo's Nod.
In an effort to clear his name, Jazz joins the police in a hunt for a new serial killer. But Jazz has a secret—could he be more like his father than anyone knows?

Contact Barry Lyga

Wow.. What an incredible story…What an intense, gripping tale that Barry Lyga has weaved. I found myself completely enthralled in the story and as though I was in the story myself. You know a book is incredible when you feel as though you are living every emotion along with the characters. The characters that Lyga created are so real and I loved each one of them. They all have their separate reasons for being in the story and all have specific meaning to Jazz. Barry Lyga is an incredible writer and has written a book that is impossible to put down. Every twist and turn in this book had me in awe.

The cover...what can I say about the cover...INCREDIBLE!! It portrays exactly what it should to attract a reader to a book. The entire cover is black except for a few specks of red...which immediately draws attention...LOVE IT...LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!

The main character Jazz is a young boy who is trying to regain his life after his father, the notorious serial killer Billy Dent, is caught and apprehended. His father, Billy Dent, killed, maimed, murdered, and raped over 100 people during his killing spree. He is a true example of evil. He is eventually caught by none other than a local town sheriff who just got lucky.

Jazz lives each day telling himself that he is good and nothing like his serial killer father. His father instilled in Jazz all his kills and his secrets surrounding his processes and killing ways. Jazz tries his best each day to not become his father. He is surrounded by good friends that tell him each day that he is not his father. They know that Jazz is truly good and spend each day trying to reassure him of this.

His best friend, Howie, is portrayed as a weak, suffering individual. Howie is a hemophiliac and Jazz worries about him constantly. Jazz and Howie are in every since of the way, true best friends. I truly loved Howie’s character. He is not as weak as everyone thinks he is and he will play a pivotal role as this story unfolds…

Connie, where do I start with her? Connie is Jazz’s girlfriend. She is a young black girl who loves a young white boy so you know immediately that this will affect the story in some way. Connie is amazing. She is Jazz’s rock. She instills in him that he is good and makes him truly believe it. She believes in him in every way and knows that he is not his father. The connection that he and Connie have is amazing. They love each other unconditionally. Connie such a strong individual and I truly believe that she by herself is what keeps Jazz good and sane.

The story begins with Jazz trying to regain his life after his father’s arrest and he is managing until…..a murder occurs within the town. Jazz sees all the signs. He has been taught his whole life the processes of a serial killer and he is positive this is what has occurred. He, Howie, and Connie then begin their journey to prove to the town sheriff that a serial killer is on the loose.

Jazz, Connie, and Howie are determined to discover who this serial killer is or at least to discover the next victim in order to stop him. This tale is so incredible that I do not want to tell anymore. You have to live each moment yourself so that as the twists and turns occur, you can experience them for yourself. All I can say is that I can’t believe I waited this long to read this fantastic book. I will be getting the sequel, Game, as soon as it releases and cannot wait to see where this story goes….Truly a 5 star book and if I could give it more than that I would. AMAZING job Barry Lyga…You are now at the TOP of my list of authors to read!!!!!

This completes another awesome book on my To Be Read List!!!
