The first sixteen years of Arabella Penthallow’s life have been a lie…
In a world where deception is the key to survival, Ara has kept up the charade of being a perfect Legion Leader’s daughter. But a darkness stirs, and she discovers she is Touched, a mortal gifted by the Gods. The Touched are as rare as they are feared, and Ara is forced to leave Union City for neighboring Midnight City to protect herself and those she loves, leaving Tove Thorn, the boy who has always known her heart, behind.
Carter Decker has vowed to burn Union City to the ground…
Midnight City’s cocky, infamous bad boy always gets what he wants, and he wants Union City to pay for burning his mother alive because she was Touched. When Carter meets Ara, she is everything he’s been taught to hate. Then he learns she is Touched—just like him—he isn’t sure who he hates more…the Touched girl whose father killed his mother, or himself for being tempted by someone he’s sworn to kill.
They are told they’re fated to be soul mates…and they each wish the other never existed.
When Midnight City is attacked by Union City, Carter and Arabella will do the unthinkable…even if it means falling for the enemy. The truth lies in Arabella’s home nation, and Tove is waiting. Soul mates or not, he has an advantage Carter doesn’t, fated souls be damned.
War is coming…and Ara is the prize.

1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Writing The Touched was one of those stories that has a little bit of back story. It wasn’t so much inspiration that helped guide me on the book, but more so strength. The winter of 2012-2013 was a bit of a rough one for myself and family. During that time, I read The Selection by Kiera Cass. It was the only book that truly brought me some much needed light. I know it sounds strange, but it was one of those books that just kinda sits with you. After reading it, I just couldn’t help but be amazed by this terrific book and how it sat with me and made me feel. I wanted to create something like that. A book that sat with someone. Connected even. I started writing about Arabella and the darkness that she felt within her. The book just sort of took control after that. :)

2. Who is your favorite character in the book?

I probably shouldn’t admit it, since they are all my favorite, but Carter is the most fun to write. His personality and traits keep me guessing. For I never know what he is going to say or do next.

3. Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel. Titles are always tricky. For me it was the hardest part of actual writing. So much in fact, that in the end, my publishers were the ones to come up with the final title. But it did go through at least twenty different suggestions.

4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Ara’s brush with death in Carter’s prospective. His venerability along with his fears of losing Ara—truly sits with me as one of my favorites.

5. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Thats a hard one. There are so many things that I’ve learned along the way. But I think overcoming self doubt is one of the most important things I learned. The literary world is a very hard and tough place to sometimes be. Between fears of rejection, reviews and the continuous doubt that clouds your mind, its hard to really see the light at the end of the tunnel. There were many days when I didn’t think I would ever write again…and days where I didn’t want to. There were days I didn’t think my writing was any good…and days when I thought no one would ever like my book. Self doubt is an ugly beast when it wants to be. I’ve had to learn how to overcome it, pretend it doesn’t exist and push forward. If I hadn’t, The Touched wouldn’t be were it is today.

6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love everything about the cover. The design team with Limitless is beyond awesome. If I had to pick a favorite, I would say that the cover model is yummy. The nailed Carter’s look down and I can’t help but think that Carter is pretty impressed too.

7. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?

So many! :) There are so many great books that are to be released next year that I can’t wait to get my hands on…but the ones that top my list are:

The Great Hunt—Wendy Higgins

The Shadow Queen—CJ Redwine

Riders—Veronica Rossi

The Siren—Kiera Cass

The Crown—Kiera Cass

Book Five of Throne Of Glass series—Sarah Maas

8. What was your favorite book in 2015?

Oh, that’s such a hard one, considering 2015 had so many amazing releases! I think the one that tops my list would have to be Queen of Shadows by Sarah Maas. I’m such a huge fangirl and totally did not see the twists and turns that Queen of Shadows had coming! Such an epic ending, I can’t wait for book five!

9. What’s up next for you?

As of right now, I’m currently working on book two of The Descendants series as well as one young adult contemporary and another young adult fantasy. I’m also looking at attending a few book conferences and hopefully finally meeting my long time writer bestie of two years Ryan Ringbloom! :)
