COMPULSION (HEIRS OF WATSON ISLAND, BOOK 1)
Simon & Schuster, Simon Pulse

Three plantations. Two gifts. One ancient curse.

All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunts South Carolina plantation insteada prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.
Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who somehow seems to know what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her familys twisted secrets. Guest Post from Author Jodi Meadows

One of the great things about Gothic literature is that the paranormal often sneaks up on you. There may be an element or two of magic that everyone knows about, and then the story builds from there. Theres someonea stranger, an innocent, someone differentwho arrives and shakes things up. For todays installment of the Compulsion for Magic tour, Jodi Meadows, whose character with a new soulturned things upside down in her recently completed Incarnate series shares some thoughts about the Compulsion-style magic she would likeand wouldnt liketo have.

But of course, we want to hear from you. What do you think about the giftsshe mentions? Or what little bit of everyday magical ability do you wish you possessed? Whats the drawback to that magic? On Compulsions Watson Island, there are two sides to every giftand every curse.

While you think about your choices, here are Jodis answers:

Jodi, if you could have any “everyday” magical gift, like finding lost things or knowing what people want, what gift would you want and why?

I'd be able to keep the house clean without actually having to do the work. Dusting, mopping, the bathroom . . . ugh. I don't want to do those things. If they could magically be clean all the time, that'd be great.
What everyday magic would your characters wish they had and why?

In INCARNATE, Ana would probably like the ability to understand people's motivations.
Eight, Barrie’s love interest in Compulsion, has inherited his family’s gift of knowing what people want and feeling compelled to give it to them. What’s one gift you’re glad you don’t have? Or your characters would be glad they didn’t have?

Well, I'm glad I don't have that compulsion. That could get someone into a lot of trouble! I don't like having to do anything.

Barrie is tied to her family’s plantation, Watson’s Landing, in a magical way, and the whole landscape becomes magical for her. What’s the one place in your book that you wish you could bring to life?

In INCARNATE, I'd like to bring Dossam's music room to life. I mean, come on. As long as he could appear with it and play all the instruments for me.

If you were going to a Halloween party and you had to dress as a character from a Southern Gothic or a Gothic romance, what would your costume look like?

It'd be fancy, for sure.

* * *
What about you? Tell us about your magic? Would you want help cleaning the house (or weeding the garden, as in Compulsion) or would you want something more exotic?

And what about your Halloween costume? Would it be fancy or scary?

Heres a bonus option for you: If youve already done that elsewhere on the tour or just want to do something different for extra entry points, show us your magical or Southern gothic costume! How would you do Kami Glass from Sarah Rees Brennans The Lynburn Legacy series? Or Lena Duchannes from Beautiful Creatures? Or how would you show your favorite everyday magicas a Halloween costume?

  1. I'd love to be able to make my morning coffee with my mind. No getting out of the warm bed on cold mornings.

  2. I love Gothic literature and paranormal books so I am ready to read this one! I've heard a lot of good things about it. Not to mention that the cover is gorgeous!

My every day magical gift would have to be not having to pick out my clothes every day. The cute outfit that fits the weather is already ready to go for me and I just have to put it on. OR not having to drive to work and just snap my fingers and be there. That would be a good one. Although I do like Kerry's response, not having to get up to make coffee sounds divine.

  3. I would like to be able to read people's minds. Sometimes people are thinking something but they don't say what is on their mind.
