Blog Tour, Interview, and Giveaway: Behind The Lies (Robin Perini)

IN HER SIGHTS
Montgomery Justice, Book 1

In Her Sights Cover.jpg
SWAT Team Sniper Jasmine "Jazz" Parker can thread the eye of a needle with a bullet. As the only female sniper in the state of Colorado, Jazz is unique for more than her extraordinary marksmanship skills and cool head. Jazz Parker and her weapon defend the helpless by exacting swift and uncompromising justice. Not bad for the daughter of the town whore.
After growing up on the seedy side of town, Jazz believed when she'd changed her name and her life at fifteen, she'd buried her past. Two years ago, she even drove away the one man she believed she could love—ex-Army Ranger turned reporter Luke Montgomery—to protect her secret.
Then, in a fleeting second, the time it takes for one clean shot, one perfect hit, to save the life of the Governor's daughter, Jazz's world begins to crumble around her. Her past and her present now threaten to destroy the life she has carefully constructed for herself. Her face and name have been splashed across the front page—by none other than Luke Montgomery—and her past has reawakened with a vengeance. A vicious enemy is bent on destroying Jazz's life, forcing her to turn to the one man she can never have in order to stop a killer before she and everyone she cares about pay with their lives.

BEHIND THE LIES TRAILER

EXCERPT (BEHIND THE LIES)
She’d give the FBI one last chance.
“Fallon.” The crisp voice on the other end of the phone didn’t calm her as it had in the past. In fact, he sounded shaken.
No more out of sorts than she. “He knows.”
“Jenna?”
“One of the bugs is in pieces. I’m telling you, he knows. I’ve got to get out of here. Now. I don’t know why he hasn’t already killed me. Probably because he couldn’t find a babysitter on such short notice.” The forced laugh didn’t hide the panic in her voice.
Who was she kidding? She shoved underwear into the bag and yanked open another drawer.
“Wait a minute, Jenna. Let’s think this through. We can salvage the operation.” He didn’t sound like himself. Something was wrong. The gut instinct that abandoned her when Brad had swept her off her feet revved into overdrive.
For months after her dad had died, she’d survived on the streets, instinct and desperation her only allies. At fourteen she’d kept herself safe by trusting her gut.
Right now, every fiber in her being told her that the man on the other end of the phone was lying to her.
She couldn’t afford to doubt. Besides, why should she be surprised that another person she’d trusted was a liar?

  1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I really wanted to write a story about a man with five brothers who were heroes…and he played a hero in the movies. Of course, he finds out that he does have a hero’s heart. That he did all along. Zach Montgomery and Behind the Lies were born out of that single idea.

  1. Who is your favorite character in the book?

I must admit, I love my villains in this story. They are interesting, complex, and they surprised me while I was writing. But…the heart of this book can be traced to Anna Montgomery. Mama Montgomery, as I like to call her, possesses a heroine’s strength and a mother’s wisdom. And she knows her boys. All of them. Including Zach, the son who thought he’d fooled her.

  1. Which came first, the title or the novel?

The concept for the novel came first. The hero is a man who lives his life as a lie. The heroine is a woman who has discovered her life is a lie. How could they possibly find the truth? The title had to be Behind the Lies. What other title could there have been?

  1. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

There is a scene in the story where Zach, the hero, teaches the heroine how to defend herself. I really liked the back-and-forth between Zach and Jenna. And I loved that he was giving her the gift of power—to protect herself and her son from anyone. Including Zach himself. Of course, Jenna’s son, Sam, had to get his own training. I won’t give the fun away, but that scene practically wrote itself.

  1. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Fascinating question. I would say that it’s two-fold. One is to never give up. Never surrender. (Yep, I love Galaxy Quest). The second, related concept is that for me, it’s not the writing that makes my stories. It’s the rewriting. Vicious, ruthless, unrelenting revision. The willingness to tear apart and cut until the scene is right. If I have a feeling something’s off…it is. No matter if the words flow well or the sentence structure is perfect, if I have a niggle at the base of my neck, I know my job. Cut, revise and rewrite! Until I get it right.

  1. What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Well, who can’t love Zach? He’s exactly like I imagined him, but I also love the mountains in the background. It has a real feel of Colorado, where the book takes place.

  1. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2013?

I’m looking forward to Darynda Jones’ next Grave book.

  1. What was your favorite book in 2012?

I really enjoyed Shea Berkley’s The Marked Son. Great writing. Great story. I can’t wait for the next in the Keepers of Light series.

  1. What’s up next for you?

I’m finishing up The Cradle Conspiracy right now (Harlequin Intrigue, December, 2013). And after that, I’ll start to work on Gabe Montgomery’s book. I’ve got quite a heroine planned for Gabe. An ex-military helicopter pilot with some big secrets. Bound by Secrets (A Montgomery Justice Novel) comes out in 2014.

  1. Is there anything that you would like to add?

I have to tell my readers, ‘thank you’. Thanks for taking a chance on a new and unknown author. Thanks for everything you do. Thanks for reading.
Thanks so much for having me. It’s been a real pleasure and I really do love to hear from readers. You can read excerpts, read reviews, sign up for my quarterly newsletter or mailing list, check out my book trailers and even request trading cards or a Authorgraph on my website at www.robinperini.com. Now for MY question…I’ve been writing away and have missed most of this year’s television and movie season (not to mention books). Any faves out there to recommend to someone who could use a little downtime?

  1. A strong, independent heroine is a must for me to enjoy a book. A top female sniper would certainly fit the bill. I have added this to my "must have" list.
